2010-2014

GameFAQs was still a viable medium between platforms and PS2/PS3 gamers still selected guides from the website as a top hit. Now, a lot of the traffic has jumped ship to other forums, or chat websites, and streaming/vblog has taken over for offering players a walkthrough to solve puzzles or reach 100% completion. This has a lot to do with the online interface for consoles/PC evolving, no? I don't think Wikis are nearly even hardly what they were back in the day. Even the entries in the great Wikipedia & many text news articles now come off as sensationalist stubs. Guess people learned to double cross-check their sources, all, plus the clarity of using an instructor in full-motion video took precedent over user-made text guides which can be confusing or erroneous. I think we're living in a new word of mouth era via social media too. Is collective consciousness beginning to outweigh the subconscious?

Some of the early comic adaptations were pretty crazy.

Batman, Captain Marvel (Shazam), The Shadow, and Captain America fought original villains in their film serials. Strangely, the now-forgotten Spy Smasher was comic book accurate and featured The Mask as his adversary. Superman likewise fought an original villain in The Spider Lady before going up against Lex Luthor in the sequel.

Captain Marvel was the first to make it into a film serial. Superman was the first to have a feature-length movie with Superman and the Mole Men. It was theatrically released, so it counts.

I can't help but look back at the early silver screen portrayals of superheroes and feel there's a bit of overlap when it comes to movies based off of video games. It's too new to be fully respected by Hollywood, so writers and directors do whatever they feel like rather than trying to capture the spirit of the property in question. But that's for another topic.
No! This is the perfect topic for it. I left that door open in my OP.

The Mask. That's a good one. Also, Sin City.

Correction: it really wasn't until the 80's that comic books started getting dark and super gritty, no?

One has to wonder if the MCU will go through a period Ike First Class for a number of years before trying R-rated material like Logan.

The 1940's saw the first real wave of superheroes at the theater, with films for Batman, Superman, the Shadow, and the Phantom gaining popularity. Their audience quickly got over it, as the features themselves were not particularly good, and the medium died down until Batman's return to the box office in 1966 starring Adam West.

While great in its own right, and I think most of us loved it as kids, West's big cinematic debut as Batman was mostly comedy and as an extension of the TV seroes, a huge outlier from most other heroes at the time who were becoming more and more confined again to the small panels on their pages in magazines and newspapers. Adapting them either seemed impossible or juvenile. The genre would not find the limelight again until over a decade later with 1978's Superman, starring Christopher Reeve.

It's worth noting that the source material from the comic books had since taken a more serious, cleaner tone and spent a number of years in the hearts of moviegoers through cartoons and other media prior to Superman's big blockbuster debut. The 60's comic books in contrast to comics from the 40's & 70's were ripe with comedy and satire and spectacle, largely devoid of any serious material to draw from for a big feature film. With Star Wars came a gearshift to darker, more serious material again.

Regardless, comic book characters were mostly left to cartoons over the next decade or so. It really wasn't until 1989's Batman, directed by Tim Burton and starring Michael Keaton as Batman with Jack Nicholson providing the role of the Joker, that the audience finally began opening up to the idea of a slew of adaptations on par with what was happening in the 1940's, almost 50 years ago. Among the first wave of these new cinematic experiences were updated versions of The Shadow & The Phantom, leaning heavily on the groundwork established by Batman '89.

It took almost another 10 years to reach Blade in 1998, starring Wesley Snipes, who paved the way for the definitive takes on X-Men with Hugh Jackman and then later Spider-Man with Tobey McGuire, the latter being probably the most accurate depiction of a costumed hero from paper to silver screen, brimming with scenes of the hero jumping around in costume, almost exactly like what you'd see in a comic panel, down to the musculature and webs, and superhuman athleticism. It was in stark contrast to X-Men which chose to depict its characters as very real people, and does away with the colorful costumes.

This combination of gritty realistic remakes combined with the power of CGI to bring the surreal characters to life for the first time created a profoundly renewed interested in seeing comic book characters jump onto the big screen. A number of attempts were made, some successful (like Batman Begins), and other divisive (Ang Lee's Hulk), with still a number of pretty surefire failures (Ghost Rider), all the while banking mostly on X-Men sequels and Spider-Man sequels, until the big giants (Iron Man, The Dark Knight, and Watchmen) reinvented practically the face of Hollywood. I think Watchmen is the one people forget the most here. It's faithful. It's powerful. It looks good. It's easy to rewatch.

.... Well, what did I leave out? Spawn? The original Captain America? XD ... The Crow? Bixby's Hulk? Darkman?

Note: I don't count guys like Godzilla or RoboCop in the same way I don't consider The Terminator or The Evil Dead to be comic book characters. They had a successful run on paper following the movies, but how much did the comics really influence the sequels? Is it like, for example, Alien vs Predator? That movie mostly had an audience because of the super successful video games, no? Even though they had a run together in comics first, I don't think that's exactly what the filmmakers were going for.

If anything, I wonder if the idea of a superhero on screen became more popular in Japan before the rest of the world caught up. As a truly serious medium, that is. With films that will last numerous generations, and big budgets, with shamelessly inspirational colorful costumes, and having 3 or 4 of these Kamen or Kaiju things every year, on top of an array of live-action TV shows.

Inb4 Flash Gordon and Masters of the Universe ;)

Man had a vision and dressed it up so nice with eclectics and esoterics, leaning heavily on the scenes relayed in other rock n' roll ballads

A long, long time ago I can still remember how that music used to make me smile
And I knew if I had my chance that I could make those people dance
And maybe they'd be happy for a while

But February made me shiver
With every paper I'd deliver
Bad news on the doorstep
I couldn't take one more step
I can't remember if I cried
When I read about his widowed bride
But something touched me deep inside
The day the music died

So bye-bye, Miss American Pie
Drove my Chevy to the levee,
but the levee was dry
And them good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye
Singin' "This'll be the day that I die
This'll be the day that I die"

Did you write the book of love,
and do you have faith in God above
If the Bible tells you so?
Now do you believe in rock and roll,
can music save your mortal soul
And can you teach me how to dance real slow?
Well, I know that you're in love with him
'Cause I saw you dancin' in the gym
You both kicked off your shoes

Man, I dig those rhythm and blues
I was a lonely teenage broncin' buck
With a pink carnation and a pickup truck
But I knew I was out of luck
The day the music died
I started singin' bye-bye, Miss American Pie Drove
my Chevy to the levee,
but the levee was dry
Them good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye
And singin' "This'll be the day that I die
This'll be the day that I die"

Now for ten years we've been on our own,
and moss grows fat on a rollin' stone
But that's not how it used to be
When the jester sang for the king and queen
in a coat he borrowed from James Dean
And a voice that came from you and me
Oh, and while the king was looking down
The jester stole his thorny crown
The courtroom was adjourned
No verdict was returned

And while Lenin read a book on Marx
A quartet practiced in the park
And we sang dirges in the dark
The day the music died

We were singin' bye-bye, Miss American Pie
Drove my Chevy to the levee,
but the levee was dry
Them good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye
Singin' "This'll be the day that I die
This'll be the day that I die"

Helter skelter in a summer swelter,
the birds flew off with a fallout shelter
Eight miles high and falling fast
It landed foul on the grass,
the players tried for a forward pass
With the jester on the sidelines in a cast
Now the halftime air was sweet perfume
While the sergeants played a marching tune
We all got up to dance
Oh, but we never got the chance
'Cause the players tried to take the field
The marching band refused to yield
Do you recall what was the deal
The day the music died?

We started singin' bye-bye,
Miss American Pie Drove my Chevy to the levee,
but the levee was dry
Them good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye
And singin' "This'll be the day that I die
This'll be the day that I die"

Oh, and there we were all in one place,
a generation lost in space
With no time left to start again
So come on, Jack be nimble, Jack be quick,
Jack Flash sat on a candlestick
'Cause fire is the devil's only friend

Oh, and as I watched him on the stage
My hands were clenched in fists of rage
No angel born in Hell
Could break that Satan's spell
And as the flames climbed high into the night
To light the sacrificial rite I saw Satan laughing with delight
The day the music died

I started singin' it Singin' bye-bye, Miss American Pie
Drove my Chevy to the levee,
but the levee was dry
Them good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye
And singin' "This'll be the day that I die
This'll be the day that I die"

I met a girl who sang the blues,
and I asked her for some happy news
But she just smiled and turned away

I went down to the sacred store where I'd heard the music years before
But the man there said the music wouldn't play
And in the streets, the children screamed
The lovers cried, and the poets dreamed
But not a word was spoken
The church bells all were broken

And the three men I admire most
The Father, Son, and the Holy Ghost
They caught the last train for the coast
The day the music died

And they were singin' bye-bye, Miss American Pie
Drove my Chevy to the levee, but the levee was dry
And them good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye
Singin' "This'll be the day that I die
This'll be the day that I die"

They were singin' bye-bye, Miss American Pie Drove
my Chevy to the levee, but the levee was dry
Them good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye
And singin' This'll be the day that I die"

People sometimes get all caught up in the kinda bullshit that turned their parents into grouches or whatever. Children are free enough in their minds to suck their own cheeks, pick at their faces, try to do handstands, laugh gleefully, and explore the dirt outside, and they can make themselves beautiful for it, with all that effort, and the right guidance. Go on an adventure. Wonder what lies over the hill.

If everything you need & really want is in your room, accessible from your bed, then what reason do you have to get up in the morning? There's some studies that show a correlation between using your bed as a living room & vice versa with waking up feeling contented in some way to not get up and do stuff. Doesn't help the world can seem so oppressive.

If something is broken, you can fix it. If you can't fix it, then you come to terms with that too. Sometimes losing one thing helps us learn a lesson and appreciate what else is left, or what new things might come. I think some people still need to come to terms with the way of things. You can't just do nothing. That's impossible. So, what are ya gonna do about it?

Heath's Joker wouldn't survive on it the same way. I don't think any other character or role could, tbh

They even selected that scene for one of the ones to recreate in Endgame, with War Machine and Nebula hiding behind a rock observing him and commenting on it.Thats a big something.

Peter Quill "Star Lord" from Guardians of the Galaxy beats others out by a small, small margin. It set the tone A.) for the entire movie & B.) instantaneously drilled the character into the minds of the audience for years to come. He has a few other really good scenes in that movie, but the initial reveal layed a foundation they're still riding on, with cameos, and toy sales, and soundtrack sales. Lots of substance, lots of clout. Star Lord (lol) takes the cake here. Easy.
