gamefaqs in general lost its aura after 2008ish (spirit started going downhill with respect to this after the 04 merger), but ce was pretty lit until the early 2010s

turn of the decade was best for me. Gamefaqs was big, I had disposable income, and video game promotions were at the height of absurdity. I had free xbl for years, tons of free games just by duping region recognition, my favorite game of all time was still active, and I had a good team of friends to play any of a variety of games, online or off.

2010-2014

GameFAQs was still a viable medium between platforms and PS2/PS3 gamers still selected guides from the website as a top hit. Now, a lot of the traffic has jumped ship to other forums, or chat websites, and streaming/vblog has taken over for offering players a walkthrough to solve puzzles or reach 100% completion. This has a lot to do with the online interface for consoles/PC evolving, no? I don't think Wikis are nearly even hardly what they were back in the day. Even the entries in the great Wikipedia & many text news articles now come off as sensationalist stubs. Guess people learned to double cross-check their sources, all, plus the clarity of using an instructor in full-motion video took precedent over user-made text guides which can be confusing or erroneous. I think we're living in a new word of mouth era via social media too. Is collective consciousness beginning to outweigh the subconscious?

And the absurd rules.

with a handful of exceptions, rules were a lot more clear and better defined under ceej's terms.

by simplifying the terms, allen introduced far greater reliance on moderator discretion, which opened the door to a significant increase in arbitrary moderator behavior.

I have no clue. If it werent for the pandemic I wouldve never found this place. I can imagine it being much better and active back in the day. I arrived when they were nailing the nails into the casket.
