Both Andersson and Baudin are more old school SocDems than the current leader and party secretary who both turned out to be pretty centrist. Old school SocDems mean more Left-wing on economical issues but more strict on immigration and crime.

The Socialdemocrats have been in power together with the Green party for 7 years now with the same PM (Stefan Lfven). During Lfvens first term they had a budget partnership with the Far-Left and conducted more typical SocDem policies. After the 2018 election though the election result gave a very fractured Riksdag (our legislative power). The SocDems and the Greens ended up forming a budget partnership with two Center-Right parties instead since that partnership gave a stable mandate: the Liberals and the neoliberal Center party. This has forced the SocDems and the Greens to implement many Liberal and Neoliberal policies. The mainstream US Democrats are comparable to our Liberals and Neoliberals I guess. Lfven has prioritized staying in power over defending some key SocDem principles.

The Government (Executive power) has very limited power domestically - most things require approval from Riksdagen and almost everything which affects the economy (increased spending, decreased spending, tax cuts/raises) need to be in the bi-annual budget. If the Government cant get its budget through Riksdagen, it cant really rule the way it wanna. Hence all the compromises so far this political term.

I see potential hope on the horizon however since Lfven is retiring in about a month from now. His successor, Magdalena Andersson, is more of an old school SocDem: cut immigration and worker immigration, tax the rich, increase spending on education, healthcare and social safety nets. The very SocDem-y measures which have been possible because of the pandemic are things which she has pushed for: like removing karensdagen* (the Right-leaning Riksdag has now forced its return though starting last Friday) and increasing unemployment pay. The party has already made several proposals in recent weeks which are very unlike Lfven and he is still officially in power.

*karensdagen = the first day youre sick you dont get paid.

And FF, regarding drugs. Being pro-drugs is not a typical SocDem trait.

At this point, I'm not sure even that will save us. People seem to actively want to fuck themselves over with continued supporting the party openly harming them.

Then you have Scotland still pushing to leave, which I think will basically be the end of anything but Tories with how our voting works and people hating themselves here.

Still gonna hope otherwise and do what I can to get people to vote, as even if I don't like Labour we have no other alternative and with them we might be able to enact good voting (and other) change.

sure, but this shit is a cycle that's repeated a dozen times in modern history. when socialists gain in power the nationalists do to, it keeps happening until one side stomps out the other or both side spiral out of control and moderates step in again.

In Northern Europe, Socialdemocrats are our Center-Left and have governed a lot of times during the past century. Traditional Right-wing parties in coalition with Nationalists have done well during the past 10-15 years in several countries though but now the pendulum is swinging back toward the parties which largely have built the wealth of the North.
