127. The out of bounds fish from Jak and Daxter (10.5 points)
Nominated by: NFUN (4/5 remaining)

Importance: 1.5
Fear: 4
Snake: 5

The progenitor of many a kid's nightmares and phobias, the out of bounds fish is a minor, but for many players around the world, piece of childhood trauma they just can't shake. A clever way to keep players in the playable game world is to give them a wake-up call if they dare try go out of bounds. Grand Theft Auto 5 does this with a vicious shark attack if you swim too far out, a sort of spiritual successor to this. The horror game Slender: The Arrival punishes out-of-bounds play with an instant Slender Man jump scare and fourth wall break. The nebulous out-of-bounds zone is inherently creepy in video game worlds isn't? There's a forbidden quality to it: something you're not meant to lay eyes on but this is what draws you ever deeper into the allure. The world becomes unfinished, often untextured, with little to no physics or collision left, the illusion of all reality and immersion is shattered. You can ever start to wonder: what is the out of bounds fish (real name: Lurker Shark by the way) PROTECTING me from? Well, probably not much, but the way you can just be casually swimming and you suddenly see this beast rise from the depths is a slight heart attack in the making. I enjoy developers who put in this extra work, creating interaction, challenge, and tension from even the simplest of game design.

Importance: 1

With great sprite work and some contextual additions, Redrum is a little more than your average boss fight. Redrum is a mutant committing murders in a sewer, but it's up to Fei and the party to figure this out, mystery detective style like. The investigation is tense and centers around a mysterious bell, which, when rung brings the monster out lurking. A pretty great 3D sequence plays out from Redrum's point of view, which greatly reminds me of the Hunter first-person sequence from Resident Evil. It's a creepy effect you would never expect from an RPG game, but it manages to build up horror quite nicely. The fight is known for being brutal but the way the game portrays the fight diminishes the horror at least a little bit for me. Everyone is just so close together it looks rather goofy. The spritework, as previously mentioned, is fantastic however; the long bony hand, bandages, Carnage-esque head, skull accessory, it's the perfect combination of 90s edginess and genuine creative horror. The detail, animation, and fantastic coloring accentuates it even more. It's one of the best looking sprites from this era I have seen. The Redrum arc also pays off nicely a little down the line. Conveying horror in an RPG is no easy feat and for me Redrum falls right in the middle of pulling it off and falling flat. It's not something I particularly love, but the sentiment and emotions can still be found here, I think.

Ambitious and unafraid to get weird and trippy, with one of the best all time villains gaming. There were a ton of games that year that tackled the player's relationship with violence: Walking Dead, Spec Ops: The Line, Hotline Miami, Dishonored, Max Payne 3, Hitman Absolution, Sleeping Dogs, The Cat Lady. Few brought that narrative to a mainstream stage as much as Far Cry 3 did. I guess I'm in the minority here because I really like the meta aspects of it. It's for sure messy and not always the best executed, but at least it's interesting and adds a layer to a game you would never expect that from (at least, I didn't). A big minus for me are forgettable side characters which occasionally diminish the impact you should be feeling as Brody as you go through your violent transformation.

To me, this is quintessential punk rock. Rancid's Let the Dominoes Fall may have been my first true introduction to the genre, but it was ...And Out Comes the Wolves that truly made me love punk as a cohesive whole. The tracks here are nothing short of firecrackers, short bursts of anger, pure energy, awesome basslines, and the catchiest hooks this side of punk, yet with also a strange sort of lonely sadness always lurking in the background. "Maxwell Murder" keeps off the album immediately with these tenets in mind. It has an ambient opening, the calm before the storm if you will, with wind and church chimes before launching into the explosive riff and Armstrong's speedy vocals about a drug dealer hooking you in with drugs, comparing him to "Jack the Ripper", but worse: he's an ordinary crook and one that can be found on street corners all over the country. There's no need for direct murders when those addicted can do it themselves. It's these kind of topics Rancid continues to tackle throughout the record, and in even darker ways. "As Wicked" is as brutal and depressing as punk music gets, bluntly tackling homeless, hunger, and drug abuse pulling no punches, but Rancid belies its dark messages with sunny hooks and fun riffs: much like the people in the song, forgotten and ignored by society, it's easy to ignore or not even notice the meaning in the first place. Clever stuff. ...And Out Come the Wolves is punk poetry in its purest form, I can close my eyes and visualize this whole album and all the people and places it takes about with ease. It's not always an easy journey, but if you're ever feeling outcasted, depressed, or alone, this album can take just a bit of that pain away, at least for me.

I don't get it...

Okay, no, that's the easy way out. Getting older, there are just certain things in pop culture that come out and you just can't grasp the appeal of. It's part of life and you have to come to terms with it eventually. But, it's still good to try. Kureiji Ollie is what's known as a "vtuber", basically a Youtube who uses a computer-generated avatar instead of their actual real-life appearance. Ollie, in particular, is part of Hololive, basically an agency for these Vtubers. So, that's my incredibly nooby introduction to it anyway. This is all pretty new to me! Ollie is a high school girl resurrected as a zombie, an actually pretty dark backstory. Still, it doesn't seem to keep her down much, as she's incredibly perky, loves her fashion, and despite being a zombie, is shown to be rather quick to scare easily. That's a cute dynamic for sure... when I say "I don't get it' I'm really just being facetious. It's actually quite easy to grasp which makes her and many like her so appealing, and of all Vtubers I seen, Ollie is definitely one of the most appeasing to my tastes (wow, Snake likes something horror the best, what a shocker). In practical effect, Ollie is just like any other person who plays video games on stream, with added lore and creativity to make engaging viewers that much easier. It's a formula that proves effective, and I think this trend is only going to become even huger than it is now. That much is obvious. And as various forms of horror and internet creation continue to grow and branch out in interesting ways, it may even create new horror icons that will become as ubiquitous as Myers and Dracula with stories that go far beyond the mere act of streaming a video game. And to me, that's exciting! It doesn't mean I'm going to tune in to Ollie everyday; for the tens of thousands that already do, however, I think they're witnessing something truly great unfolding before their eyes.

This is such a cool concept that's a little wasted in my opinion. With a level name like THE GHOUL'S STOMACH I guess i expected something a little more... ghoulish. To be fair, the inside of someone's stomach wouldn't really look all that exciting. I do think it's cool when the level flashes blood red with spikes everywhere, almost like the level is trying to digest you. All other times, they could've called this level The Cave of Hell and I wouldn't have spotted the difference. The enemies and obstacles you face off against are uninspired for a level like this and it capping off with a random Hydra boss fight just confuses things more. With the game's legendary difficulty it can be a tense experience for sure, but it's one where a few touches and improvements here and there would've made it even better.

What a mistake the Hellraiser franchise was. Pinhead wasn't worth getting absolutely idiotic creatures like this Hot Topic reject. In one foul swoop, the whole horror and mystique of the Cenobites are gone. I can't believe this. CD looks like if they made a Hellraiser knock-off called Devil Riser and the Pinhead rip-off they used looked like this. Are the CDs meant to look like razor blades? Is the joke that CDs are difficult to lug around? What is the intent here? Besides being so creatively bankrupt by the third film that THIS is what passed for an interesting Cenobite. I think the worst part is his mouth designed to look like a slot for a CD to go in. That's so hilarious it almost comes around to being ironically good. The original Hellraiser was perverse, twisted, and tragic. CD is none of those things and is highly representative of horror franchises gone sour.

These comics make me not want to be a horror fan anymore. Look, I don't want to thrash someone's work for nothing. That's too easy. What I look for here is intent: is that a joke or meant to be serious? All it does is remind of those kids channel Youtube videos that mash-up Hello Neighbor, Slender Man, Freddy Fazbear, and Granny and thinks it makes a coherent whole. Joke or not, there's nothing here that makes this a satisfying story. Once you get over the initial humor of, "oh these characters are random" and "none of the art style matches anything" else this becomes a shallow story that's not scary, not entertaining, and nothing more than pictures that scroll by your dead, glazed-over eyes. And of course, you have the creepypasta edge of the No-End House which might as well be my apartment with how well it's used here. None of the characters even match their original personalities, they all speak the same monotone one-line per panel throughout the whole series. The Alice series works a little better for me. There's panels with splashes of red blood and gore that at least imply a modicum of artistic effort. I can see someone reading this and getting an absolute kick out of it, but for me these mash-ups do nothing and the worst representation of internet horror stories.

How ironic... you could've thought of a fifth nomination in the time it took to post a fifth nomination. I understand though... coming up with nominations is hard. What if you miss something you wanted the person to talk about? What if you nominate something that was already nominated? Then you have to think of another one! Who wants that headache? You can't even think of a fifth one and now you have to think of a sixth? You can literally have an existential crisis over something so simple. But think about it this way... if that happened with every little thing in life you'd go insane. On the universal scale, this problem doesn't even rate as a blip. That's a good thing. Take a deep breath, go about your day, and I'm sure the inspiration will hit you! At least, for next year.

Favorite Ranking That Reached Number One?

Kept you waiting, huh?

I'm here and I'm ready to get spooky. Over the past month, I have scoured and researched 134 of the freakiest, horrific, and grossest nominations on Planet Earth. In our biggest year on record, you've challenged me with things I haven't thought possible. It's a dirty job, and it's a dirty job I absolutely love doing! This year, FEAR is taking over as the dominant attribute, any tiebreakers will be solved with the fear stat this year! Will it change much? Maybe! Along with that, of course nominations will be ranked by their importance (influence on the horror genre, its specific medium, or its popularity) and how much I personally like it for that extra touch of subjectivity.

With October already well underway, I'm going to work extra hard to get these write-ups done as the big day approaches. Halloween season only comes but once a year, so the more scary stuff we get in this month the better and more appropriate!

Enough of my rambling, I'm itching and tasting to get this started, so... let's just do it already!

You can see a list of every nomination right here:

I typically do. They're pretty much meant to be I think. It's usually what all future canon follows after that.

So this conversation got me looking it up, and apparently he sold the movie rights in 2016 to the guy who wrote The Amazing Spider-Man movies and Zodiac, somehow. So huge quality gap there that doesn't promise great things for the character.

I think part of what needs to happen with Slender Man is that he needs to just kinda die off for a while. Let him build back up over time. It'd be cool to see him in the future as a long-standing folk monster like the Jersey Devil or Bloody Mary

Oh wow I wasn't aware of that all. Clearly not yet. Looks like he's also writing the upcoming Scream film.

That would definitely be for the best and I can see it happening.

I do agree with your points there. The internet takes everything and runs into the ground in what seems like minutes. I suppose that is a key difference here. Where usually you'd get maybe a Friday the 13th every year, instead you get some low effort Slender Man indie game released every single hour. Slender Man surprisingly IS a copyrighted character though, owned by Eric Knudsen and some media company for adaptations. The general non-enforcement of this has definitely lead to some cheapening for sure. I think it might be more strict lately which is probably why you don't see many adaptations of Slender Man anymore. Well THAT and the very tragic and unfortunate stabbing incident too.

To make a counterpoint; I personally love Slender Man and most creepypasta characters. I think they're the perfect modern day equivalent to all the slashers of the 70s/80s and the Universal Monsters before that. Almost all horror characters start off as a terrifying new idea and all devolve into overused schlock. Michael Myers lost all mystique and terror by the second film. Dracula often becomes a parody of himself thanks to Bela Lugosi's easy to imitate performance and malleable vampiric traits. I can list numerous other examples: Jason, The Mummy, Freddy Krueger, Jigsaw. It's all a cycle and happens every time with horror franchises and characters. The original concept of Slender Man and all these characters is still great. And they can be great again too with enough effort and creativity. But in order to be popular, these sorts of sacrifices are bound to be made eventually. If you could even spot a little of that original creativity, hell, I'm all for it.

Haha and I just watched Nightmare on Elm Street 4 myself! Where Freddy has his jump the shark moment and literally pretends to be a shark. Really difficult to take this film seriously at times but I do like Alice as a lead and the roach motel kill is top-tier Freddy.
