That's another working week over, time to drink. This week was my first payday and I wanna get sloshy at the pub since we'll probably be going back into lockdown soon - I wanna enjoy my first paycheck y'know. Might not be able to though.

I get that the price increase is annoying, but like $14 for a pack of smokes is still pretty great. At least from my own perspective - I don't smoke, but I've lived around smokers all my life and I have a general idea of how ridiculously expensive of a habit it is over here.

Games that feature quadrupedal fantasy creatures that you either play as or have as a companion, ala The Last Guardian, is a doglike.

Specifically of the Dusk trilogy, which is the one I'm most immediately familiar with.

Like they're trashy in places with cheesecake VN scenes, but it's also just a really light, silly RPG adventure with a lot of dumb comedy, addictive crafting and replayability due to the timed nature of the games.

I platinum'd Atelier Ayesha on PS3, which is why I want to play the Dusk trilogy - from there, I can continue the story throughout the next two games. If that's a good time, I'll go back and play the Arland games, and then I'll play the Mysterious games.

With that being said, I might start Persona 4 before that because I've been slacking super hard on that front. But the Atelier games are on my mind because I had a great time playing RPGs like World of Final Fantasy last year, and I remember Atelier Ayesha being a bit of a comfort game for a while there. I could never get the rest of the Dusk trilogy on PS3, and now I have a chance to play through the rest on Switch.

Honestly it's for the best. Scott Morrison fucked us over on COVID just before new year, and Omicron cases are about to hit 30,000 a day.

Get this, he changed what it means to be a "close contact". My mum works in retail for example, and until late December when the rules were changed, a close contact would prompt a text message being sent to her phone advising her to get tested just in case. She got one close contact alert, her and her partner got tested, and the results were thankfully negative.

Now, you have to open the check-in app, see your check-in history, and there'll be a red mark and a "close contact" message. No push notification, no text alert. You have to seek it out yourself.

In the past four days, she's had at least two close contacts and a coworker who's been infected. The coworker she found out about yesterday, but the day before that is when she found out about the other close contacts from her job.

The only reason she knew to do that is because I had chanced upon the same information by complete coincidence, and I told her.

And because we're seeing record Omicron numbers, Scott Morrison is only advising people to get tested if you're already showing symptoms. So unless you're already sick, you're not even encouraged to get tested anymore.

So you could be a close contact 20 times over and you can keep going to work as long as you don't start coughing or sneezing. And by the time you ARE coughing and sneezing, you've probably already got it, at which point you're basically just confirming the inevitable while asymptomatic carriers or people vulnerable to COVID due to close contact are dissuaded from getting checked.

The worst part is that we could have curbed this. Back in September/October, there was a big push for people to get vaccinated - we hit 95% vaccination. Because of this, we were set to reopen everything and roll back most/all of our COVID protections on December 15th because numbers were dwindling

Between September and December, Omicron happened. And cases were rising by the hundreds every day. We were seeing 2,000 cases a day - a record amount of transmissions even then - on December 14th, the day before we were gonna re-open.

So given that cases were jumping by hundreds a day, we were seeing record numbers of daily infections - to the tune of triple the previous peak, at least - AND that Omicron is vaccine resistant, meaning that it would be about as severe for a vaxxed person as it would for an unvaxxed one, you'd assume we'd call off the re-opening. Shit sucks, sure, but we're seeing peak COVID numbers beyond the prior scope of our previous peaks. We need to stop the curve, especially before the holidays begin and the virus starts fucking the country from all directions due to all the travelling.

But we re-opened everything on December 15th. No masks, no signing in, no spacing restrictions. At the peak of COVID infections, in our entire two-year history of having COVID, we removed EVERY PROTECTION WE HAD to track and try to contain COVID.

Only for masks and check-ins to go back into effect on December 24, because in nine days, we went from 2,000 daily infections to 8,000. Our already peaked COVID infection rate QUADRUPLED in nine days. Flights were cancelled with no notice on Christmas fucking Eve, when they could have held off on reopening on December 15th and lessened the potential damage of the Omicron variant, not to mention avoid giving people high hopes before shattering them the day before Christmas.

So given that by New Year's Eve, we were seeing 10,000+ new infections a day, we would surely continue to be vigilant and try to contain the spread, right?

We put a handful of restrictions back into place. Masks and check-ins only. Nothing closed, not even high-volume areas like malls. Peak infections, malls packed with holiday shoppers.

And on top of that, we also crippled our close contact system. You used to get a text alert if you were in an enclosed space with someone who ended up having COVID.

Scott Morrison changed the definition of "close contact" so that a fraction of close contacts actually got text alerts. If you have the check-in app, you have to manually view your history to learn if you had potentially been in contact with a sick person. If you didn't have the app, and you used the webform or signed in manually with a pen and paper like most old people did? You have no fucking idea if you're at risk or not. and if you are at risk of contracting COVID - which is currently very, VERY likely - you may spread it to people around you before you know you're sick.

And not only that, only people who are showing COVID symptoms are being prompted to get tested. Which means that people who have been in close contact with a sick person are being urged to avoid getting tested - to the point of going to work, including high-traffic retail jobs - until it's clear that they're getting sick and almost assuredly have COVID.

So when more people in Australia than ever before are sick with COVID - not at risk, 100% confirmed cases - with a jump in daily cases from 2,000 on December 15 to 21,000 on NYE and being on the verge of 30,000 on January 6, we now have less measures to inform us of the danger and to help us protect ourselves. And we can't even get tested until we're almost certainly already sick.

So you know what? Novak Djokovic dodged a bullet, and in time Serbia might even be glad they didn't send their star fucking athlete to this incompetent, plague-ridden garbage fire of a continent.

I watched that yesterday, it wasnt nearly as good as I expected it to be after all the hype.

yeah, I liked it well enough but it went for too long and the whole imaginary girlfriend thing was stupid.

I'd give it a light 7/10 because I like what it is, an attempt to make a prestige movie with superhero shit - and that's exactly what I want from DC. I'd take a hundred Joker-inspired superhero movies over a single new Zack Snyder one. That being said, I thought it was full of pointless and aimless scenes for the sake of being "artsy" and weird, to the point that I got sick of them by the time Arthur crawls into a fridge for no reason. Bit too long, too much of the movie is pointless, but it's an okay watch. Parasite definitely deserved the Oscar over it.

I understand that sometimes there are circumstances where you can't speak up and do the right thing, especially if you feel indebted to someone, or they make you feel selfish, or you just feel like you're under their thumb and like you can't talk back to them.

It's upsetting what happened, but from this point on, you've got to start living for yourself and making those decisions, even if it clashes against the other people in your life. One thing you can do to make up for this? Make sure nothing like it in your life ever happens again, short of extraordinary circumstances.

I think I'm making a habit out of having 2 drinks after work to unwind. The last couple of days I cracked some premixed vodka drinks I bought on the weekend to help unwind and ease pain, and I'm really looking forward to my two drinks this afternoon.

like when it's 10 minutes until quitting time, one of them goes like "just leave all this for them to do", even if there's still two or three things to do. Like he doesn't even need to get involved, but he stops me from doing it.

Another one walks around and micromanages the place, at least twice she's walked up to one of the dryers, looked inside and added 30 minutes onto the drying times. Even for sheets, which are meant to be a bit damp so they can go through the steam press. Just comes right up and fucks with my work. I'm doing it the way I've been told to by the boss, and she's another employee.

And like I do fuck up a little, but it doesn't help me get used to the work when my workload is getting fucked with by someone else, or when I'm being stopped from doing my fucking job because my co-worker wants to stop working ten minutes before we leave. Not "we" as in the entire workforce, "we" as in me and him because we leave at the same time.

Again, not perfect. This is my third week on the job, and I'm getting better. But fuck me, it's frustrating dealing with this shit.

I had a couple premixed vodkas that I bought on the weekend because I was sore and I wanted to loosen up a little. Made my hands a little sweaty, but otherwise it was okay. Probably should have taken some ibuprofen instead, but it was a shit of a day at the industrial laundry - we got like eight tubs of sheets washed, most of them will probably need to be rewashed tomorrow because they're not getting them pressed fast enough, and I spent 20 minutes unloading one dryer because the sheets were so tangled.

it's like, on one hand we're allowed to step in and help and like work around the other jobs in the laundry. But the directive we both got from the boss is to keep the washers washing, and the dryers drying. There's no time between loading and unloading the washers and dryers to help with anyone else.

I can feel myself getting stronger though. My biceps are getting hard. You could crack a walnut on my calves.
