At the same time the homelessness problem in this city is absolutely atrocious, it's honestly pathetic the city allows things to be the way they are. Homelessness disproportionately affects the LGBT and black communities but I have to wonder how many of those businesses and households have done anything, let alone anything substantial to try to help solve the problem. I imagine most of them think their little lawn signs are contribution enough.

This city has a few cool points to it, but overall it's pretty sucky. I think I'll be leaving soon.

It's stealing a cultural aspect of another's community whilst it's still being used to marginalized a group.

Hair is a great example. Braids, plats, dreads, cornrows ect...have rich African heritage. For the most part, when a famous white person has used one of these styles, they are met with praise, or at least gain notoriety, either which helps their brand and makes them more money.

To this day, there are still jobs that view those hair styles as unprofessional, and black people are fired from jobs, disqualified from sporting events, and have less products and stylists available who know how to properly groom black hair.

TLDR; MGK and Bo Derrick can wear cornrows without consequence, but a black person applying for a job maybe viewed as less professional for having a "non-white" haircut.

And yet the majority of black women straightening their hair isn't cultural appropriation?

...while hiking?

I was up in Glacier National Park last week and it was full of people, many of them with their kids and such.

Now for women, if they want to wear impractical clothes to go hiking (like nearly all of them were) that's fine. As adults they can decide what they want to do and suffer the consequences. Hell sometimes I ride my bike in jeans just because I like wearing jeans even though they're bad for riding.

Also if this was the city (or almost anywhere that wasn't a mosquito, bee, tick, poisonous plant, sharp rock, and slippery slope having mountain), like were I am now in Seattle, I wouldn't have any issue with it since wearing such clothing is sensible in this heat and urban environment (as long as they put sunscreen on all that exposed skin).

But in this case either the parents picked out the clothes to bring on their trip and are utter fools, or they let the kid pick and didn't bother checking and vetoing the poor (but understandable) decision making of their child. I don't know, just seems like bad parenting to me.

Also in most colleges a professor can date a student as long as they don't ha e any classes together, is that breaking the code of conduct? If not, would it be alright for a high school teacher to date a student as long as they weren't actually one of their teachers?

Since making this thread the thing I described in the OP has happened three more times. I'm in an Indian reservation and apparently just letting dogs roam around without leashes is just a thing here. I was fixing a flat tire (the amount of broken beer bottles along the roadside is almost comically absurd) in town and I mentioned what happened to a guy who I was talking to and he said the dogs are normally docile but probably came after me because "they aren't used to someone who looks like you", so the dogs are racist too.

What level of force do you think is appropriate?

What I mean by owned animals includes livestock with pets. Either way animals that are the property of someone. I ask because as I was biking out in the country just now I was chased by some pretty big dogs and I had to... "take care" of one of them when it made a lunge for my leg.

I don't think the dogs were being violent neccesarily, probably just defending what they see as their turf even though it was a public road. That said I don't feel bad in the slightest to be honest, since even if I killed both of them that would still probably be less financial/emotional pain for the owner than how much I would have sued him for if they had bitten me and made me crash. Plus as a human I place my own safety far above that of any beast.

Calm down, I didn't hurt the dog, I just squirted it in the face with my water bottle to blind it for a sec while I booked it out of there.

Dude wtf.

So just a bit ago I got to another little town after a hard day of biking up mountains against a strong wing in this heat and I was really hungry. The grocery store was closed already so I went to a nearby bar/restaurant (first time I've ever been in a bar) but the waitress I talked to said they weren't serving food since they had so few people in the kitchen and I ended up just getting two cans of soda.

After I left, the lady who runs the place comes out after me and tells me that she'll personally make me something since she recognized I wasn't from town and must be a traveler who wasn't already aware of the kitchen thing. Not only did she bring me out some food but also another can of soda and a cup of ice water. I tried to give her a $20 but she refused it and wished me safe travels.

I guess if nothing else I can give them a shout out here. If you happen to be in the town of Belt, Montana go check out the Harvest Moon Saloon. You probably won't get free food like me, but it will be good food.

You're using some backwards logic here, if the place where guns are being fired and are more commonly found are strict about gun safety then anywhere else should be doubly so.

Are you also implying the guy meant to point it at faramir? If so then he definitely shouldn't have a gun.
My logic is simply that at a place where guns are expected to be fired, pointing a gun at someone is a bigger deal than pointing a gun at someone in a place where the gun would never actually be used except in exceptional circumstances. I also make a distinction between a gun being held and pointed at someone and a gun being placed on a table where it couldn't possibly misfire except in the most freak or freak accidents since no one was touching it.

As for if the guy was deliberately placing it in such a way, who knows, not you or I anyways.

That would be pretty uncomfortable I suppose, but arguing with him or telling him to move it probably actually slightly increased your chances of being shot somewhat ironically. That old couple who treated me to lunch were both armed and pulled out their guns when the subject came up as to how different the place is from the city I'm from. The guy who gave me a ride had several guns laying around in his truck too. Accidents can happen for sure but I guess I trust people who are that open and comfortable carrying them around to have some idea what they're doing.

So here's how my day went yesterday. I started off in some small town with about 100 people in it, about to start on a stretch of the state that was incredibly desolate and hilly, about 80 miles to the next town while it was about 102 degrees out. Out of nowhere some dude hops of of his truck asking me where I'm heading. I tell him I'm heading west and he immediately tells me I can put the bike in the back and get a ride from him since he's heading that way.

Mind you, this guy doesn't even know my name yet, I could be a serial killer or something and he offers to drive me that distance. I accepted and during the ride when I mentioned my money issues off hand he literally pulled out a wad of cash and handed it to me. He also gave me a bad ass knife and some "road soda" (beer) before droppings me off, a good 20 miles further to my destination than he was going himself.

After that I stopped at a restaurant/c-store to charge up my bike a bit and this old couple, again comes out of nowhere asking why I was out in that heat and even after explaining I had only ridden about 30 miles that day so far they insisted on buying me lunch and giving me a bunch of tips for traversing the mountains since I'm getting close to them. After they leave (giving me their number telling me to call them if I need anything) the waitress gives me some free ice cream before I hit the road. There was also a random woman who asked about the bike and asked if I needed any money without me even hinting at anything money related.

Later towards the evening after about another 30 miles I passed by what looked like a ghost town (it practically was since most of the building were rotting and the total population was about 25) and went into investigate only to be called out to by a woman if I needed anything. After talking to her for a bit she invited me into her house (by far the nicest in the town) and gave me a bunch of food and history lessons on the area before offering to let me spend the night there with her. Again, I'm just some random dude from an eastern city who isn't personable (I forgot to properly introduce myself in each of these encounters) or charismatic in the slightest. The idea that a woman living alone would invite a strange male stranger into her home for the night is difficult for me to comprehend. In the morning she loaded me up with food and when I told her the town I was planning on stopping in today she called up a friend who lives there and set me up with a free place to sleep tonight.

This level of kindness just isn't natural, religious men is one thing but this is just crazy. Also this area is suffering from an intense drought that is destroying the local cow industry so prices are rising and everyone is having a tough time of it and yet still they would help a person like me.

Huh. There was a case in my home town of a women, 19 years old I believe, getting caught in the act having sex with a 13 year old boy she was tutoring and the boy told police she had done it multiple times as well as providing him with alcohol and she hardly even got a slap on the wrist.

Like the sex related charges were dropped and she didn't serve any time at all in jail or prison and only got a few years of probation or something. That and her case was never brought up by the media until she tried to have the record of the case sealed. She was also the daughter of the head public defender in the city though, so maybe that had something to do with it.

Anyways, it's nice to see greater equality in the legal system. For far too long it has demeaned and insulted women by assuming them less culpable for their crimes and giving them lighter sentences, treating them almost like they were all minors or something. Sexism has no place under the law.

Say you have a trans teenage boy who hasn't had any hormonal treatments or surgery and thus still resembles a teenage girl from the outside but is accepted as a male socially and such. Would it be inappropriate for him to go shirtless at the pool since bystanders might not realize he was a male or would it be inappropriate to stop him from going shirtless at the pool since that would effectively be denying his gender identity?

I know I'll get shit for this but completely irregardless of however reality may or may not be, whether women truly are oppressed or not, they have a biological predisposition towards feeling like they are.

Basically evolution has run in such a way that women are more prone to see/recognize danger more often than men so that they can respond more quickly to protect themselves and their children since whatever danger they're recognizing probably comes from something physically more powerful than them. If an ancient man sensed danger it could be a situation where he might be able to fight (or even one where he would be compelled to fight) instead of flee, but an ancient women often couldn't and wouldn't have even been expected to fight so fleeing and seeking help was the go to. Just like how creating artificial light hasn't erased our evolutionary fear of the dark fully even though we live in much, much, much more peaceful times that danger sense women have is still active and will ping because of things that often aren't truly huge issues.

I say all that but men actually have the opposite problem in that they often underestimate danger or write off warning signs (which is one of the main reasons young men die so much more doing stupid stuff than young women do) so maybe my manly dullness is what is making me think what I think.
