Basically a similar issue as that which plagued the Pokemon Gen 2 games, since the battery also kept the ingame time, which caused it to drain much faster than in other Game Boy games.

Why they abandoned it for the Switch is mind-boggling. It was seriously one of the most innovative things I've seen in gaming since the advent of 3D.

They didn't abandon it right away (the 3DS saw support well into 2019, two years after the Switch's launch), but the Switch was the clear next step for Nintendo, considering that they had merged their console and handheld divisions years prior.

Yep. The PS1 and PS2 era, which of course coincided with Nintendo's first Dork Age, so liking Nintendo became very uncool, as opposed to the alternatives on Playstation and later Xbox. It was also when Pokemon saw its popularity drop to its lowest point, during Gen 3, since those same kids started seeing Pokemon as beneath them despite being fans years prior.

If you don't live in a busy city (and sometimes, even then), then your best bet was game/anime conventions and college campuses.

The annual anime convention here was how I was even able to make as much headway on them as I did.
