Isn't "Assist trophy deconfirms a character" outdated now?

Dark Samus was an assist trophy and is now a character, ditto with Isabelle from Animal Crossing, hell wasn't Little Mac a trophy back in Brawl?

Or does that rule apply to "same game", i.e. you can't be an assist Trophy in Ultimate and made a playable character in Ultimate - it'd have to be in a sequel?

Yeah, that rule usually applies for the same game that they are an AT in. The next game, it's fair game until they are confirmed for either role (or none at all, as seen with some removed ATs like Saki Amamiya).

He was fairly high up there after coming back from the dead. But he got confirmed as an assist trophy pretty early on, and then even after that got a deluxe Mii costume, so fans know that's a pretty concrete fate for him for now.

If dopey Konami actually keeps making new Bomberman games, who knows, maybe he'll make it into Smash Ultimate Super Turbo Edition.

This. He was one of the first new Assist Trophies shown after Ultimate was first unveiled, so he was considered out of the running early on.

But he was pretty requested up until then, but Konami already had Snake, Simon, and Richter on the way, so I guess they felt Bomberman on top of that was a bit much.
