Or the first in the older to the first in the newer? Strongest of the older to the weakest of the newer? Do we compare Nintendo consoles against Sony and Microsoft or do we recognize that Nintendo doesn't keep up with the others? For instance, is it fair to compare the Wii, the weakest of Generation 7, to the Xbox One X, the strongest of Generation 8? Or should that comparison be base Xbox 360 against base Xbox One? Is it fair to say the Gen8->Gen9 leap is Xbox One X->Xbox Series S? Or is it base Xbox One to Xbox Series S? If we compare first releases, then this is obviously weighted towards more recent Generations, because technological growth is exponential, even if it's not clearly visible. Constant rank-ups and rank-up rewards. Instant dopamine because of how quickly you progress and how much your collection grows! Then, after a few days, the rank-ups start to become sparse. Rewards for growing your collection become fewer and less rewarding. It becomes harder to keep a full stock of the items you need. You keep checking the shop and seeing all of the cool things you could buy, but you notice that the currency is basically paid-only. Anything you get for free, if you get anything for free, can barely buy anything. So you say "eh. I'll just buy the $10 bundle to get some stuff I need" and then you're off to the races. You notice how much more engaging the game was immediately after you bought something, but you notice it didn't last very long. So you buy again. After a few purchases, maybe as early as the second purchase, you start to reason that you're going to keep spending anyway, so you start buying the massive $70/$80/$90 whatever bundle. Now you're injecting huge amounts of cash for short-term gratification. Eventually, you start to reconcile it with the Sunk Cost Fallacy. "I've already spent so much, I should spend just once more to hit my goal." "Once more". "Once more". Ad nauseum. This is what gacha games are designed to do to a person. I haven't played Pokemon GO for a while, but I'm willing to bet it's something like this? Also, they tend to add new stuff that's limited time, so players feel the need to get everything ASAP before it disappears forever.
