Vermintide 2 and all but a couple pieces of it's DLC.

if you bought winds of magic and end up disliking beastmen, there is a way to disable the DLC. somewhere on the library page after clicking the game should be an option for "manage my dlc"

this used to be a lot more relevant when the DLC was new and utterly imbalanced/buggy (there was a lot of animation problems and you'd get hit by stuff nowhere near you, plus even on a good day they were overtuned), and i think it's better now, but fyi it's an option if you wanna just fight ratties. winds of magic's progression system is mostly self contained afaik so it should still be there when you re-enable it

Super Robot Taisen: Original Generation 1&2 (theres a better version for ps2 but it's not in eng and never will be. the sequel after this (2nd OG) isnt in eng, but the next game after that was released in southeast asia with an english version)

super robot wars games are similar to fire emblem games, but they focus more on ammo, energy conservation, and each mech having multiple moves with different properties (whereas the only in-battle choice you have with FE characters is usually what weapon to use). the mainline games center on famous mecha series, but the Original Generation line combines the meta-plots of all of the originals they made up for other games into a couple fully-original games

its completely turn based and most of your time will be spent watching very cool flashy attacks (gba isn't super flashy but what can you do)

and then eventually the newer games on other systems

rance games (specifically 7 and 10) still give me chills to this day when i think about them

the worldbuilding is on a similarly grand scale as tales games, but in a wholly different cruel direction. rance 8+ spoilers: the entire world is essentially a single channel on god's TV, and god only cares about amusing himself to pass the time... and he especially enjoys suffering. everything in rance is almost cruelty for cruelty's sake, until the entire world is at war in 10

Kenshi? It's more of an RTS/open ended RPG though. If you can get into it, you'll probably love it, but it's one of those kind of brutal sorts of games (but it has a very variable difficulty slider and a lot of different starts, especially with mods. some modded starts are basically a shortcut to the city building part). you'll have to mod in some aspects like visitors purchasing things or just ambient villagers, but, well, it's super moddable. This is probably the closest to what you want if you want actual freedom, but there's not really a main plot

Dark Cloud's kinda old and I don't like the actual combat but the city building aspect is a huge part of it

The Suikoden games can feel this way because you have 100~ people to recruit each game and they often brings upgrades to your main base, so it feels like progress is constantly happening as you do sidequests to bring people to your side. 2's the one everyone loves and I think I remember enjoying it the most too

Mount and Blade is kind of similar but you don't design the layout of cities, it's more about kingdom management (once you eventually reach that level, which may take a very long time)

yea it kind of fell off and got a lot weaker near the end; the last arc felt like just a previous arc reiterated, which kind of sucks for a one cour anime

next season doesn't look great outside of hametsu flag s2 and maybe getter robo, but the one after that is gonna have freakin muvluv oh my god its happening please don't suck

been playing a lot of dungeon fighter online recently and for the first time in the roughly decade i've played this off and on, i'm actually at endgame for once

the lag makes fights buggy but they are pretty neat, and playing as buffer is really satisfying

genshin starts to feel really gacha after a couple months when character progression falls off to being horribly slow and you realize you need 5* characters and weapons to make any sort of real progress anymore

look at how overwhelmingly useful venti has been for a week 1 limited gacha character (until they did that rerun recently, but I stopped playing before then). the difference between doing spiral abyss with and without venti is absurd. same thing with the power level difference between 4* and 5* main dps

you can play on a casual level and still have fun, but if you main dps xiangling for fire out of sheer lack of options due to luck and ever play coop with a diluc, it just gets kind of depressing

especially once you reach around adventure rank 40-45 where you have to start farming 5* artifacts, the power difference becomes VERY apparent. this is the part where if you've been stuck with only starter characters and shit luck, you might not be able to clear content solo anymore

i personally would like wearing masks as a precautionary measure in crowded spaces to be more normalized in western culture, and I wouldn't have a problem wearing it most of the time

outside of covid, you're looked at like a lunatic if you just wear a mask and don't seem visibly ill. meanwhile if you check out google street view of like japan there's plenty of people with masks on
