It's the latter - nobody notices that VGM does this basically all the time, haha. Funnily enough, I'm far from the first person to even point out that MM7 Wily 2 is cribbing off of Thriller, it's just that nobody's really all that concerned about it.

yeah, that does happen a lot in VGM. kinda reminds me of how movie music often rips off classical music (or even other film scores) but nobody really talks about it.

ok, i'm just now reading a lot of these writeups and listening to the songs and i have a question about your mega man 7 wily 2 writeup: is your point "people shouldn't make such a big deal out of this song ripping off thriller" or is it "it's stupid that the balan wonderland theme gets so much crap for ripping off ghostbusters, as this happens all the time in VGM - just look at wily 2 ripping off thriller!"?

i THINK it's the latter, as wily 2 doesn't seem to be particularly disliked in spite of its possible plagiarism (it has a like-to-dislike ratio of 1K to 6 on youtube) but i'm just making sure!

i wouldn't say this project was pointless because you guys hate movies. but i do agree that there's not much of a point to this, since it's obvious that there has been very little thought was put into many of these movies and writeups (which is also the case for every other gauntlet crew movie ranking topic that i've seen). yeah, it's cool that you're getting exposed to movies you wouldn't normally see, but what exactly do i get out of reading your little blurb completely bashing stagecoach?

btw, it's utterly ridiculous that people criticizing this topic got bombarded with "WELL, WHERE WAS YOUR RANKING, HUH?" responses. just because i didn't (re)watch 30 movies and didn't submit a ranking and writeups for them doesn't mean i not allowed to cricize anything about this topic on a public forum. this is like if i complain that the food is too salty at a restaurant, and the chef responds "WELL, WHERE'S YOUR FOOD, HUH? OH, YOU DIDN'T COOK ANY? SHUT UP THEN!"

i have no major disagreements with your mega man 2 writeups, everyone thinks it's an excellent soundtrack so that's not surprising. of course, the one exception is wily 2 and i don't even hate that song. i don't think it's good either but i understand your reasons for ranking it that high. it's much better when you take the context of the game into account than when you judge it on its own merits, methinks.

aside from that, the one sidenote i'll make is that i totally disagree with your "the mega man 2 password theme is the only mistake mega man 2 made" statement. sure, it's just a jingle and it's not something i go out of my way to listen to, but i think what little is there is great! i love the chord progression - it sounds like a fragment from a steely dan song or something.

actually, i legitimately think bale's batman voice is horrific and i also think he's the worst batman ever (yes, worse than west and clooney).

batman begins is still one of my favorite movies of all time so it's not a "dealbreaker" but god, that voice is impossible to take seriously.

just saw this movie. it was meh. don't have much to say about it that hasn't already been said a bunch of times in this topic. in short: both GotGs better, tonal shifts bad, harley subplot terrible and should have been cut. also, i thought ratcatcher sucked (seems like she's pretty popular?).

really? scott pilgrim and sin city (i hate this movie, btw - didn't see the second one) felt waaay more like comic books to me. hell, even the original suicide squad was more comic-y, i'd say.

i do think there's something to be said for the theory that in certain cases, the "best stuff" has already been done in the contest before. once you've gone through wed, gs and ll, you end up with rr, which is one of zts's lesser works to my ears. digifamily is great but not as good as classroom imo. etc. i know i said VGMC15 was my favorite but maybe VGMC14 actually WAS a little better. tough to say.

...right. I'm trying to say there's a difference between "general people" and "people you know". A lot of people have difficulty understanding that. People always seem to narrowly focus on the opinions of people they've met or in the sub-cultures they hang out, like in the websites they visit, or the curated content of social media they use and mistakenly assume that's general opinion and then wonder why they still make Transformers movies when everyone hates them, or why Two and Half Men was so popular when everyone knows it was a terrible show. A lot of people I know hate the first Suicide Squad. A lot more people I've never met and will never ever meet enjoyed it.

i know someone who loves the transformers movie series.

i know someone who legitimately thinks attack of the clones is the best star wars movie ever made.

i don't know anyone who likes the original suicide squad.

yes, it's anecdotal evidence that doesn't mean much (hence why i said "for what it's worth"). but if the movie is as beloved by general moviegoers as you claim it is, i think it's pretty noteworthy that i haven't met a single person who got enjoyment out of it.

Second, who cares if it's groundbreaking and meaningful? It should just be a regular thing they throw in there, if anything. It should be treated as normal and not something special. The Harley Quinn cartoon, for instance, does a great job of it without treating it like this groundbreaking thing.

i personally think harley quinn works best in small doses (in other words, having her in a 22 minute episode of a batman TAS episode is fine). in a feature length movie, she gets on my nerves after awhile. haven't seen suicide squad 2 yet but that was part of the reason why i didn't like birds of prey.

yeah, the debating in this topic is pretty reminiscent of my infamous truffaut's law debate that took place a few years ago. though i will note that particularly inviso and karo went after me FAR harder than they're going after zithers here, which i find interesting because i was being far less belligerent (at least scarlet is finally throwing some shade now). though i didn't give him credit at the time, i think profdeadpool probably had the most reasonable take in that debate:

correct me if i'm wrong but i think that's pretty much what's going on in this topic with zithers's posts as well. yeah, these writeups suck for the most part, but holding them to the standards of professional movie reviews (especially ones by nouvelle vague directors!) is a bit silly. you're obviously going to be continuously frustrated and annoyed if you're doing that because these are not in-depth reviews, nor do i think they're intended to be.

however, i will also note that in another gauntlet crew movie ranking topic, wicklebee got completely vituperated because several of his writeups were essentially just "i disliked this movie because i hated the sex scenes." so that does contradict the argument i'm making above. if the writeups in this topic are not in-depth reviews but just short, first impression blurbs, that's fine, but then don't go bash someone else because you don't like THEIR first impressions.

that's not to say i liked wickle's writeups - they were terrible. but i'd personally rather read a million "eww sex scenes" writeups by wickle than one "lol this movie is nothing but kubrick masturbating" writeup on 2001 by karo.
