https://www.cnn.com/2021/04/28/media/daniel-ek-responds-joe-rogan-podcast-controversy/index.html

Spotify CEO Daniel Ek is standing behind and promoting his company's top podcast host, Joe Rogan, even after Rogan spread anti-vaccine misinformation on-air. Rogan said in a recent episode of his podcast, "The Joe Rogan Experience," that healthy young people should not get the Covid vaccine, a statement that stands in contrast to all credible public health advice. When Bloomberg reporter Lucas Shaw asked Ek about those comments on Wednesday, Ek declined to address them directly. "What I will say is we have 8 million creators, and hundreds of millions of pieces of content," Ek said. "We have a content policy and we do remove pieces that violate it." A Spotify spokesperson declined to comment beyond Ek's remarks. Rogan broadcast his anti-vaccine message at a point in the Covid-19 pandemic in which more younger people are getting hospitalized from the virus and remain at risk for spreading it.

"Joe Rogan is wrong. I'm hoping he was just trolling for new subscribers, but he has a pretty big platform and that's really destructive," CNN media analyst Dr. Jonathan Reiner said on "New Day" Wednesday. "The young are the reservoirs of this virus in our community. They are really powering the spread so the only way to put this virus down once and for all is to immunize." On Spotify's earnings call Wednesday, Chief Financial Officer Paul Vogel cited Rogan for contributing to the platform's strong podcast consumption last December. That was the same month Rogan's podcast became exclusive to Spotify. He mentioned Rogan again when asked about podcast advertising. This is far from the first time Rogan has spurred controversy since joining up with Spotify. In September, Rogan apologized for spreading misinformation about fires then burning on the West Coast.

https://www.nytimes.com/2021/04/25/business/covid-vaccines-second-doses.html

Millions of Americans are not getting the second doses of their Covid-19 vaccines, and their ranks are growing. More than five million people, or nearly 8 percent of those who got a first shot of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines, have missed their second doses, according to the most recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That is more than double the rate among people who got inoculated in the first several weeks of the nationwide vaccine campaign. Even as the country wrestles with the problem of millions of people who are wary about getting vaccinated at all, local health authorities are confronting an emerging challenge of ensuring that those who do get inoculated are doing so fully. The reasons vary for why people are missing their second shots. In interviews, some said they feared the side effects, which can include flulike symptoms. Others said they felt that they were sufficiently protected with a single shot.

Those attitudes were expected, but another hurdle has been surprisingly prevalent. A number of vaccine providers have canceled second-dose appointments because they ran out of supply or didnt have the right brand in stock. Walgreens, one of the biggest vaccine providers, sent some people who got a first shot of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine to get their second doses at pharmacies that only had the other vaccine on hand. Several Walgreens customers said in interviews that they scrambled, in some cases with help from pharmacy staff, to find somewhere to get the correct second dose. Others, presumably, simply gave up. From the outset, public health experts worried that it would be difficult to get everyone to return for a second shot three or four weeks after the first dose. It is no surprise that, as vaccines are rolled out more broadly, the numbers of those skipping their second dose have gone up. Im very worried, because you need that second dose, said Dr. Paul Offit, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania and a member of the Food and Drug Administrations vaccine advisory panel.

https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/wireStory/census-texas-gains-congress-seats-calif-loses-time-77325615

America's population growth has declined to its slowest rate since the Great Depression, the Census Bureau said Monday, while the nation's political center of gravity keeps shifting further to the Republican-led South and West. Texas, Florida and other Sun Belt states are gaining congressional seats as chillier climes like New York and Ohio lose them. The new allocation of congressional seats came in the U.S. Census Bureau's first release of data from a 2020 headcount. The numbers generally chart familiar American migration patterns but also confirm one historic marker: For the first time in 170 years of statehood, California is losing a congressional seat, a result of slowed migration to the nations most populous state, which was once a symbol of the countrys expansive frontier.

The reshuffling of the congressional map moved seats from blue states to red ones, giving Republicans a clear, immediate advantage. The party will have complete control of drawing the congressional maps in Texas, Florida and North Carolina states that are adding four seats. In contrast, though Democrats control the process in Oregon, Democratic lawmakers there have agreed to give Republicans an equal say in redistricting in exchange for a commitment to stop blocking bills. In Democratic Colorado, a nonpartisan commission will draw the lines, meaning the party wont have total control in a single expanding states redistricting. It's been a bumpy road getting this far. The 2020 census faced a once-in-a-century coronavirus pandemic, wildfires, hurricanes, allegations of political interference with the Trump administrations failed effort to add a citizenship question, fluctuating deadlines and lawsuits.

https://www.cnbc.com/2021/04/26/biden-administration-set-to-relax-outdoor-mask-guidance.html

The Biden administration is slated to relax federal public health guidance on wearing masks outdoors as soon as this week, a source familiar with the plans told NBC News. The announcement, which may come as early as Tuesday, could give separate recommendations for fully vaccinated people and those who have not received a coronavirus vaccine, added the person, who spoke on the condition of anonymity. The administration is still finalizing the guidance, NBC reported. Over the weekend, White House chief medical advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci indicated that the new mask guidance was imminent but also warned that Americans should adhere to public health measures until the CDC makes an assessment. What I believe youre going to be hearing, what the country is going to be hearing soon, is updated guidelines from the CDC, Fauci told ABCs Sunday program This Week With George Stephanopoulos. The CDC is a science-based organization. They dont want to make any guidelines unless they look at the data and the data backs it up. But when you look around at the common sense situation, the risk is really low, especially if youre vaccinated, he said. The CDCs current guidance states that masks may not be necessary when you are outside by yourself away from others, or with people who live in your household. However, some areas may have mask mandates while out in public, so please check the rules in your local area (such as in your city, county, or state). Additionally, check whether any federal mask mandates apply to where you will be going, the agency adds.

Dr. Isaac Bogoch, an infectious disease specialist at the University of Toronto, said he supports the anticipated guidance from the CDC. He added that more research is showing that very few Covid-19 infections happen in outdoor settings. But masks should still be mandated in indoor settings, he said, until most of the U.S. population is vaccinated and it is difficult for the virus to spread from one person to the next. Its been over a year. We have a very good understanding of who gets infected and how they get infected, he told CNBC in a phone interview. I think its fair to say you dont need to wear a mask outside unless you cant maintain 2 meters or 6 feet of social distancing.

Tweet doesn't mention it but Anthony Hopkins wasn't even there to accept the award so they just ended it pretty awkwardly after that. So those last two awards after Best Picture was a pretty bad way to end the show.

https://www.nbcnews.com/business/consumer/get-ready-higher-grocery-bills-rest-year-n1263897

Shoppers had better start budgeting more for their groceries, according to the latest consumer price index, which shows prices are increasing and they're likely to keep going up. The monthly consumer price index, released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, showed a 0.6 percent increase in March, the largest one-month increase in nearly a decade. Over the past year, prices have increased by 2.6 percent overall. The spike comes on the back of prices that had already risen during last year's pandemic stockpiling and supply chain disruptions and never went down. Consumers are noticing their inflating receipts. Outside a supermarket in Long Island, New York, John Kermaj said he has seen prices rise in just the past two months. "We used to buy this stuff for $30. Now it's $60," he said. He has tried to adapt when shopping for his family by buying only essential items and avoiding name brands, but that means skipping meat and fresh fish. "Gotta be the pandemic," Kermaj said. "Shortage." Before the pandemic began, the national average for a pound of bacon in January 2020 was $4.72. By last month, the price had soared to $5.11, according to exclusive supermarket point of sale data from NielsenIQ. Ground beef is up to $5.26 a pound, from $5.02. Bread is up to $2.66 a loaf, from $2.44. The hikes are more acute in certain areas. Boston and Philadelphia are paying nearly a dollar more per pound of bacon, while in Chicago it is up by about 70 cents. Several items spiked by over 5 percent at once in Dallas, including eggs, chicken breast, fresh ground beef and sandwich bread.

The White House said that it expects inflation to go up and not go back down. Three temporary factors are driving the increase, Jared Bernstein and Ernie Tedeschi, members of President Joe Biden's Council of Economic Advisers, wrote in a blog post: The rate of increase looks faster when it rises from a lower level, while supply chains have been disrupted and demand for services has built up. "We think the likeliest outlook over the next several months is for inflation to rise modestly ... and to fade back to a lower pace thereafter as actual inflation begins to run more in line with longer-run expectations," increasing from "historically low to more normal levels," they wrote. The price increases could stoke food insecurity at a time when more than 9 million people are out of work. The pennies can add up, week by week, family by family. "Food is a necessity," said Jayson Lusk, a Purdue University agricultural economist. "Lower-income households spend a larger share of their income on food. When we see food prices increase, it affects lower-income households more."

https://www.tmz.com/2021/04/25/elon-musk-mars-people-will-die-2026/

Elon Musk made a startling comment about the impending voyage to Mars, saying, "A bunch of people will probably die." Elon was deep in conversation with Peter Diamandis, founder of the X Prize Foundation, when they talked about Musk's dream for humans to set foot on the Red Planet by 2026. NASA's projection was 2033. Elon waxed a little poetic, saying, "Going to Mars reads like that advert for Shackleton going to the Antarctic. You know it is dangerous. It's uncomfortable, and it's a long journey." And then, he lowered the boom ... "You might not come back alive, but it is a glorious adventure and it will be an amazing experience ... Yeah, honestly, a bunch of people will probably die in the beginning."

Thing is ... he may be truth-telling, despite people not wanting to hear it. Elon's take is that the upside justifies the downside ... "For the first time in the four and a half billion year history of Earth it has been possible to extend life beyond Earth and make life multi-planetary." He went on ... "Humanity is the agent of life and we have an obligation to ensure the creatures of Earth continue even if there is a calamity on Earth, whether it is man-made or a natural calamity - if you look at the fossil record there are many mass extinctions. It is about ensuring we pass that threshold where it is self-sustaining if some calamity prevents the ships from going there." Musk, who was barefoot during the interview, ominously asked, "What comes first - a self-sustaining city on Mars or World War Three?"

The NYPD's Hate Crimes Unit is leading the investigation into a brutal, unprovoked assault against an Asian American man in Manhattan. A Chinese immigrant who was collecting cans on Friday night in East Harlem was attacked from behind and repeatedly stomped on as he lay helpless. A bus driver called the police after seeing him unconscious on the ground. The 61-year-old, whose family identifies him as Yao Pan Ma is now fighting for his life in the hospital. Ma's niece says he immigrated to New York two years ago. They moved to Harlem after their Chinatown apartment burned down, and he recently lost his job to COVID. Collecting cans was how he helped to support his family. The suspect is described as an adult male, dark complexion; he was last seen wearing a black jacket, black pants, white sneakers and a multi-colored baseball cap.

https://www.theverge.com/2021/4/24/22400976/twitter-removed-tweets-critical-india-censor-coronavirus

Twitter has removed more than 50 tweets critical of the Indian governments handling of the coronavirus pandemic, and did so at the request of the Indian government. First reported by Indian news site MediaNama, the Indian government sent Twitter an emergency order on Friday to censor 52 tweets, according to a disclosure notice on the Lumen database. The censored accounts include a sitting member of Indias Parliament, two filmmakers, an actor, and a West Bengal state minister. A Twitter spokesperson said in an email to The Verge that the company may make certain tweets unable to be viewed by people within India if the tweets violate local law. Twitter says it notified account holders before it withheld content to make them aware that the action was taken in response to a legal request from the government of India. When we receive a valid legal request, we review it under both the Twitter Rules and local law. If the content violates Twitters Rules, the content will be removed from the service, according to the Twitter spokesperson. If it is determined to be illegal in a particular jurisdiction, but not in violation of the Twitter Rules, we may withhold access to the content in India only. In all cases, we notify the account holder directly so theyre aware that weve received a legal order pertaining to the account.

It isnt the first time that Twitter has bowed to pressure from the Indian government. During protests by farmers in February, the company permanently blocked more than 500 accounts and removed others from being visible within India. The Indian government issued a notice of noncompliance to the company, the New York Times reported at the time, which could have meant jail time for Twitters employees in India if the company had refused. Indian law restricts the publication of material that the government considers defamatory, or which could incite violence. According to the Lumen notice, one of the tweets that was censored in India (but which is still visible outside the country) was this one from West Bengal state minister Moloy Ghatak, accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi of downplaying the seriousness of the coronavirus pandemic. India will never forgive PM @narendramodi for underplaying the corona situation in the country and letting so many people die due to mismanagement. At a time when India is going through a health crisis, PM chose to export millions of vaccine to other nations, the tweet reads.

https://www.scmp.com/sport/basketball/article/3130766/jeremy-lin-unapologetic-if-asian-american-activism-costs-him-nba

NBA champion Jeremy Lin has said that he is unapologetic if his activism will cost him the chance of a return to the league. Lin, who has been outspoken about the rise of anti-Asian violence and prejudice in the US, was on a Paley Impact round table, Medias Role in Combating Hate and Violence Towards Asians and Pacific Islanders. Im going to be honest. In the situation that Im in right now trying to get back to the NBA, its like, do I talk about this? Do I talk about this activism stuff because its seen as a distraction and its like people are saying, even national reporters are saying, Its hurting Jeremys case for getting back into the NBA by talking about this stuff. One thing Im trying to learn as I get older is I gotta be more unapologetic and just be who I need to be and say what I need to say. The NBA free agent has so far been overlooked for a contract, despite starring in the G League for the Santa Cruz Warriors. Lin was asked by moderator Cassidy Hubbarth of his regret at not breaking down more barriers for the next generation of Asian-Americans during Linsanity, his breakout with the New York Knicks in 2012.

For me when everything happened with the Knicks and I was playing, for me everyone was talking about the history, this hasnt been done before, this hasnt happened in X amount of years, we havent seen a player like this in 60 years. I was just naive. I didnt understand how systemic it was, how subtle it was, and even when people would do things really overtly, whether its tweets about penis size or crazy stuff, I would just be like, Oh its OK, hes ignorant or Oh its OK, he didnt understand and that was kind of just my way of dealing with it because when I was dealing with racism, which happened all the time in terms of on the court, it was just I cant focus on that. Even this season, Lin was called coronavirus by another player while playing in the G League bubble. Its sad because growing up, everyone always called me Yao Ming, and then now all these (Asian) players are being called Jeremy Lin. You would think that makes me feel good. That makes me feel terrible because I dont really care about them being called me its more the fact they cant be them.

In the images, the transparent cup is covered in hate-filled messages including fuck off Chinese, die China and kill China. Police are investigating the disgusting and disturbing incident. I want to post this in order to bring awareness to the Santa Cruz area that racism and hate exists in our small little town that Ive called home the past 24 years. I never knew such a thing would occur in a place that has made me feel so safe and secure [sic], she added. The Santa Cruz County Sheriffs Office has since released a statement condemning the incident. This is a disgusting and disturbing incident for anyone to have to go through and will not be tolerated. Our detectives are currently investigating this case and looking for any information that could lead to the person responsible. We are following up to determine if there is any video evidence or witnesses who may have seen anything suspicious at the time, Ashley Keehn, a spokesperson for the sheriffs office, wrote.

According to BoundingInToComics, Johnny Cage did not appear in the Mortal Kombat movie due to racism and will not likely feature in the sequel. Johnny Cage was one of the original playable characters in the original Mortal Kombat arcade game that released in 1992. Johnny Cage is the stage name for a has-been action movie star known as Jonathan Carlton. His character is largely inspired by Jean-Claude Ban Damme in the cult classic 1988 movie Bloodsport. In the original story Johnny Cage entered the Mortal Kombat tournament to reclaim his fame and, for once and all, prove to his critics that he can actually fight.

In an interview with Inverse, Mortal Kombat producer Todd Garner explained why they chose to introduce a brand new character to the movie. And as we had previously speculated, it was too replace a seemingly problematic character known as Johnny Cage. Garner would then explained why Johnny Cage does not appear in the movie, insinuating that he felt the whole thing was a bit too white for his liking. There are a lot of characters in the Mortal Kombat universe and theres no character I could take and dust off and give a new backstory. We needed somebody to completely manipulate, so theres not 30 years of people going, You cant do that. He continued: I feel like if I was getting to make a movie with a diverse cast, it felt weird to have a white actor, literally Johnny Cage, be the hero of the story.

Glauber Contessoto says that on April 15 at 6:00 p.m. PDT, he became a dogecoin millionaire. I was up all night staring at my screen, Contessoto, 33, tells CNBC Make It. After learning about the meme cryptocurrency on Reddit, Contessoto says he invested over $180,000 in dogecoin on Feb. 5, when it was priced at about 4.5 cents. Contessoto was intrigued by dogecoin for a few reasons. For one, he loved the Reddit community surrounding the digital coin, as its base had grown substantially since dogecoins creation as a joke in 2013. He also appreciated that it was inspired by the Shiba Inu Doge meme, he says. And like many holders of dogecoin, a reason why I put my savings into dogecoin is Elon Musk, who has repeatedly tweeted about the cryptocurrency. Though its unclear if Musks tweets in support of the coin have been serious, I think the guy is a genius, Contessoto says.

His friends were critical of the meme cryptocurrency and warned him to be careful. Dude, its a pump-and-dump [scheme], one of his friends said in a text message. Its going to zero, eventually. Experts are similarly very skeptical of dogecoin, which they say is highly speculative and a so-called meme trade based on social media buzz. They warn that investors could get burned. Still, Contessoto stuck with his investment plans and then continued to hold the cryptocurrency. About two months later, on the night of April 15, the price of dogecoin began to surge. That week, dogecoin spiked 400%, and on April 16, it defied odds as it hit a market capitalization of $49 billion, according to CoinGecko. Dogecoin ultimately reached a record high of around 45 cents. The next day, under his username iUsedToCallDogeDodge, Contessoto posted on subreddit r/dogecoin. He wrote, Hey guys I just became a dogecoin millionaire, and attached a screenshot of his dogecoin holdings on Robinhood, showing a balance of $1,081,441.29. It went viral, he says. Though this was an unusual surge for the cryptocurrency, Contessoto doesnt intend to sell anytime soon. My plan is, once I hit $10 million, then Ill take out 10%, he says. In his opinion, this stuff is going to continue to grow. Dogecoin began to lose steam on Tuesday, and now, the cryptocurrency is trading at about 28 cents, according to CoinGecko, with a market value of about $36 billion. Despite the decline, Contessoto is still hovering over $1 million, he says.

If you missed it ... the league announced this week it's easing up its uniform restrictions for 2021, allowing most players to now wear single digits and other fun numbers. Most of the dudes are pumped for the change ... it'll allow guys to continue to wear their college jersey numbers into the pros -- but Brady made it clear Thursday he HATES it. "Good luck trying to block the right people now!!!!" 43-year-old Brady said in social media post. "going to make for a lot of bad football."

Brady's tantrum didn't stop there ... he continued in a SECOND post, "Why not Let the lineman wear whatever they want too?" "Why have numbers? Just have colored jerseys ...why not wear the same number?" Brady finished it all off with an emphatic, all-caps line that read "DUMB." Look, TB12 probably has a point ... it's going to be much harder to identify who plays what position on the field -- but honestly, who cares? Have you seen how swaggy some of the stars look in the new jersey numbers?!?
