No religious group will ever eliminate abortion, as that is impossible. They will only criminalize it to control women and perpetuate poverty. The right in America is too tied to religion and have been completely compromised to a level that they disavow scientific fact and basic human rights.

A zygote is not a human life. It is a zygote. Do you want me to present you with a zygote and you can have a nice day with it? A bundle of cells that can become life does not equal life. I understand the morality of 'drawing the line' becomes extremely controversial and I understand that's where people have more reason to be upset. Still - I point to statistics showing the overwhelming majority of abortions occurring early and the rare late term abortions being due to extreme medical complication that would kill the mother and child.

Simply limiting medical access to abortion, as many states do, is foolish and based on religious dogma.

What does the natural death of a human life have to do with whether or not it's morally okay to intentionally end it? So by this logic, if a human life has a high mortality rate, it's morally okay to kill them? I'm not seeing the rationale here.
It's a zygote in early development...extending the rationale of flipping that switch that naturally occurs extremely frequently is in no way comparable to murdering a living person, who does not have a 50% change of dropping dead randomly on a Tuesday. False equivalency, next.

The cycle of poverty in southern states is perpetuated by:

a) poor sex education

b) religious evangelism

c) poor healthcare access

Young people are deterred from contraceptives. Young people get pregnant. An abortion is inaccessible, expensive, far away, and socially discouraged. Less education, more poverty. Easy.

Pro-choice. All women I know are pro-choice, even if a few of them do not wish to have an abortion, personally - and they recognize the privilege of that position. I know one guy that I've gotten into it with - he doesn't seem to care if his 10 year old niece was raped - he thinks the life is 'sacred' and should come to term.

50% of fertilized embryos don't implant in the uterine wall, or fall out. so I'd expect those 'pro-lifers' to feel very strongly about those fertilized 'life forms' they claim to care so strongly about. I don't doubt that people who are 'pro-life' feel sincere, but I think people ought to try and separate the thought of a fertilized embryo and a baby.

The vast majority of abortions occur early in the first trimester. Pro-lifers constantly misrepresent what a fetuses looks like in different stages of development in this time period. The majority of late-term abortions (which are statistically rare) occur due to extremely severe health complications where nobody is getting through otherwise. This obsession with 'saving the life' of an unborn child is a fallacious approach to caring about the lives of children and babies.

The representation of abortion being 'destroying a potential life' is complete dogma that doesn't coincide with reality.

idk everyone's at their worst when drunk. it's nice when people figure out how to not do that, but I think it can happen to anyone. still, really sucks when someone keeps doing it again...and again...

I live with a pretty hardcore conspiracy theorist, and even when I get a sentence I consider a 'breakthrough', it literally means nothing because he is also a lazy ass who contradicts himself constantly. I don't know what the best answer is. I think some people need kindness and support, but I think that approach honestly doesn't work for some more ornery folks - I honestly think confrontation with them is sometimes the easiest way to get through some rational thought.

Ok, this clears a ton of things up;

Israel is currently illegally occupying parts of Eastern Jerusalem, so any laws they pass to evict someone there would not be recognized.

Under this context I have to side with Palestine
I mean, bad moves were made on both sides of course. Still, it kind of comes down to that for me too in this circumstance. The land-grabs and evictions have been pretty inconducive to creating any sort of sense of brotherhood - which I know is perhaps ignorantly optimistic, but I think that MIGHT be possible if - like wpot said, the Israelis be responsible with their power. In my mind, that's not re-occupying currently occupied lands, something demonstrably done continuously for decades.

Arguments about the past are going to get nowhere, because the history of that particular stretch of land are very tortured and complex. Here's a primer (which obviously includes oversimplifications):

3000 years ago. There was a Jewish/Israeli kingdom. How similar are Jewish people today to the people of this kingdom? I'm no full expert, but I understand that there are still genetic (not to mention religious) consistencies so it's not completely wrong to draw a connection.
2500 years ago. The Jewish kingdom gets destroyed and many of the Jewish people (mostly the upper classes) were intentionally sent into exile in Babylon and elsewhere.
2000 years ago. The Jewish kingdom was starting to be rebuilt, but the Romans came and conquered them. They destroyed their temple and ushered in a new era of repression. Also, Christianity grew out of Judiasm.
1500 years ago. The territory contains a mix of Arabs, Jews, and post-Jewish Christians. However, the Roman emperor converts to Christianity so they are the favored residents of the area (as part of the Byzantines, yes).
1200 years ago. Islam is founded...again in the same general area. Arab Muslim forces capture Jerusalem, although they fight mostly against the Byzantines. In this period the Jews are not at the center of the conflict: they persist somewhat in the background.
1000 years ago. The Crusades begin. These are rather disastrous for the Jews, who were often the ones displaced for the Christian kingdoms that briefly sprang up here and there. As I understand the Jewish population was actually displaced more by the Crusades than by the Muslim conquest.
500 years ago. The displaced Jews were living all over the place in Europe, and anti-Semitism was a real problem (the Inquisition, etc)
100 years ago. Anti-Semitism was coming to a real head in Europe and many Jews moved back to Palestine (as part of the Zionism movement) given that their home-away-from-home in Europe was strongly rejecting them (and WWII was on the horizon) and given that the Ottoman Empire had just been destroyed in WWI.
80 years ago. The Holocaust occurs.
75 years ago. The surviving Jews flee to Palestine to meet up with the Zionists. There is mutual dislike between them and the local Arabs. Conflict quickly breaks out. The West supports the Jews, which was very understandable given the events of the preceding 50 (or 3000) years, who win the short wars and set up a government.

...and then nothing much changed until today, unfortunately. The situation never stabilized.

The point is: it is wrong to say that Jews don't belong in Israel/Palestine/pick your name. They were wronged and kicked out of the land by force over centuries. They have no true home elsewhere. HOWEVER, two wrongs don't make a right. (Or in this case, 12,529 wrongs don't make a right)

The situation today is that the Israelis have the power and they are abusing their power. They are morally responsible to find a true, humane, permanent solution for the Palestinians EVEN IF those Palestinians hate them, attack them, and don't share their religion. To go Spiderman on them, with great power comes great responsibility. Israelis now have that power.
Great summary...my POV basically parallels yours.

Not really. Criticizing something as vapid doesn't = authoritarian. If your definition of censorship and loss of First Amendment rights has anything to do with private corporations respecting your rights, you'll never get diddly-squat. You're stuck on their platform whining about their rules. You're probably voting for people that will never reign in private corporations, no matter how much lip-service they pay to it. Commenting does not equal action. It equals little in terms of effecting authoritarianism. Twitter-politics represents a small part of the population that overinflates their influence on society at large. Commenting on YouTube is probably even more pointless than Twitter. Meanwhile, we're on PotD - even less relevant to reality.

Because Judgmenl is implying they were taking lightly the killings by deliberately leaving out the context of the post. The multiple rocket posts by whoever is posting it is giving a visual demonstration of the amount of rockets that have been fired at Israel. It's supposed to be making a point about justifying their retaliation (or what they claim is retaliation). Turns out thats a thing that like...everyone does to illustrate scale.

Whatever you make think it is, it's what they said it was. It's not supposed to be a joke or taunt or whatever you want it to be. You might disagree with their stance or believe they're in the wrong. That's fine, but you don't need to pretend thats not a misrepresentation of what they were doing.
Yeah, I don't think it's a joke or a taunt. I can tell that all the Israeli leaders are very sincere in how they feel, and I'm sure whoever thought up the idea of tweeting how many rockets were sent at Israel thought it was a great idea. I still think that it's lazy and emotional - present the full context if you don't want it to just seem like propaganda. Show the numbers on both sides. If people seriously think tweeting rocket emojis to 'represent' how many there have been is good factual reporting, then lololol. It's definitely presenting....some accurate information in an unprofessional way while ignoring lots of other information.

"Just to give you all some perspective, these are the total amount of rockets shot at Israeli civilians. Each one of these rockets is meant to kill.

#IsraelUnderAttack"

Nobody decided to quote "the context" to clarify things for me - this is the context as shared by the same Twitter account. However, this is NOT the FULL context of the situation at hand. If they also did a visual showing the comparison of how many rockets Israel has shot too. A comparison of injuries on both sides. A comparison of deaths on both sides. Posting rockets on Twitter to represent how many rockets have been fired by Hamas does not offer a full contextual picture of the conflict.

I am not trying to 'paint' Israel as anything, I am indicating that the context is very up for debate, because it is not exceptionally informative. It is informative within a narrow scope, and in a somewhat silly way. Give us the number in one tweet. Make the number bigger. It's quite 'fluff' in terms of providing real context. It is narrow context, sure.

Why are people arguing about the context? I think the context is that Israel is firing rockets back at Hamas after Hamas fired rockets, and they're tweeting about it. Tweeting a bunch of emojis of rockets is quite tone-deaf. I don't understand why people are talking about context.

Know what's really tone deaf? Hamas bombing civilians in Israel and prompting this recent round of retaliations. And it's interesting there are no topics about Hamas's attacks on Israeli civilians, including bombing a synagogue which, unlike the targets in Palestine, didn't have embedded Hamas operations around the location.
You're not getting straight to what caused this particular confrontation. We should be talking about Sheikh Jarrah.

Yes, Hamas is disgusting. Let it be noted that Israel funded them in their initial years Israel also continues to displace millions. I don't support the actions of Hamas, but realize their actions as an inevitability based upon historical persecution.

I totally get what you're getting at, but you can't just look at Palestinian actions in a vacuum. You mention the bombing of synagogues, but Israel has bombed the hell out of schools, hospitals, mosques...you name it. AP and AJ are having a hard time figuring out why their offices were bombed.
