I like how the game pretty much picks up where Edgeworth 1 leaves off. I don't remember much from that game but hearing about the Yatagarasu, Zheng Fa and the smuggling ring is nice.

By the way, if I were drafting a new Yatagarasu, it'd be Kay, Pearls and Sarge.

This is such a weird case because we don't actually learn there's a dead body until halfway through it. At first we're just investigating an "attempt." It seems like if I were Edgeworth the first question I would ask is "where did the bullets go" and "did they hit anybody."

The first new character we meet in Episode 1, aka the assassin turnabout or whatever is a reporter named... I want to say Nicole? I played this a couple days ago and have already forgotten some things. I can't wrap my brain around her design. She's like... a 90's xtreme superhero, like static shock or something. She has like... a bear trap on her? So she's not really a reporter, but like a wilderness afficianado. Or something. In any case, I'm pretty sure the game hints that Lotta Hart is her sensei and that makes sense.

More on Nicole The game teases us with making her an interesting character, but ultimately turns her into yet another accomplice with nonsensical motivations. So to get her exclusive interview all she has to do is aim a laser pointer at the president's head. Yeah, okay.

This murder case is pretty wild. Top tier Case 1 material for sure. It's maybe a bit too complicated for its own good. Maybe I'll write about Knightley next.

I'm not committing to a playthrough topic, but I will give some of my first impressions (2 cases in). I'm not going to mark light spoilers (like character names) but I'll mark major stuff.

I'm playing on desume and the game will sometimes slow down so that the music sounds like I'm on drugs. Fun!

This experience has also really prevented me from judging the music. I know a lot of it seems to be reused from Edgeworth 1 so that's not great. Maybe I'll listen to some youtubes after this.

For a fan translation this is superb. All the characters are pitch perfect, and so far it doesn't suffer from the problem that some fan translations have, which is that the translators go super serious.

They really didn't bother coming up with an interesting way to bring back Kay huh? She just got bored and randomly showed up I guess.

Oh man, the original character portraits/designs are still a bit rough. Just like Edgeworth 1 you can tell who the murderer is by which character is going to have the most interesting visual gag breakdown. Also, Simon Keyes can fuck right off; this is just lazy.

Edgeworth is written really well here. In Edgeworth 1 I consistently asked myself "why is edgeworth even doing this" but here I totally get a sense of his motivations/mindset.

Liking it a lot so far. I've heard people say this is top-tier AA. I can see the potential.

Soul is actually pretty good; it's like Inside Out except done right, in that it's an imaginative approach to ethereal concepts.

The ones before that one though:
Onward - pretty unimaginative and dull
Toy Story 4 - cash grab and retroactively weakens 3
Incredibles 2 - not bad, just disappointing
Coco - good not great

6-6 is okay. I actually like Sorin and the defendant quite a bit. The case doesn't really have a good resolution though. Also, for a fanservice case it is a bit disappointing.

The problem with politics and the oscars is that it's all so transparently performative. Ever since #oscarssowhite they've been obvious and blatant in promoting a brand of neoliberalism that is easily called out as being disingenuous. The speed in which they were able to go from an all-white slate of nominees to this one just shows how arbitrary the whole project is and it gives the impression that any and all political statements made are solely for identity politics/representation.

That said, going even more political probably isn't the answer. Any time an actor tries to push the envelope beyond a Disney-fied sense of diversity and inclusivity, that actor is usually memed and ridiculed (like Joaquin Phoenix last year with the dairy critiques). But the answer also isn't to embrace centrism, which Tyler Perry literally did on Sunday night in one of the grossest speeches I've ever heard.

Probably they need to adopt more of a Emily Dickinson-esque "tell the truth but tell it slant" approach. No need to be self-congratulatory about how diverse your noms are and how the industry has changed (when it actually hasn't really). There's no need to abandon projects of advancing minority filmmaking - Just be less self-serving about it. Also tell a few jokes every once in a while.

I'm not an expert or anything; those are just my thoughs.

really just a weird weird show

the in memoriam felt super disrespectful, particularly in a year where not only hollywood lost a lot of people but everybody did. the person introducing it was just so ridiculously overdramatic. then there were glaring omissions and not even giving anyone a chance to applaud for icons like christopher plummer. I also understand how having an upbeat song can also be a way to mourn but this just wasn't it.

you can never criticize a hopkins award win, since he's amazing always but that was the most anticlimactic ending to an oscars I've ever seen.

for 80% of the show, everybody was super serious to the point of being dour, and then we got that really wacky song game and the scripted glenn close stuff. made for the memes basically.

frances mcdormand telling everybody to go watch movies in the theater shoulder to shoulder and then howling at the moon has some really gross energy to it.

nothing here really made me feel good except harrison ford's blade runner gag and him being surprisingly good at pronouncing names.

that's a good point; though Minari is pretty much split half/half and an American film, which definitely separates it from Parasite. Also politically/optics wise it makes sense for the Oscars to go all in on Minari this year.

I seent it, in a theater for the first time in a year and a half! Seems like theaters are operating on shoestring budgets now: there were no ticket sellers, one person at concessions and the AC wasn't on. Also the film started about 15 minutes late.

Good film, would've appreciated a bit more resolution at the end (big spoilers) rather than just full on sad wailing. Never really enjoyed this archetype (super inspirational and optimistic role model ala all might) so I just don't care that he died. I'm more concerned about Tanjiro losing his sword AGAIN.

also a bit disappointed we didn't get any backstory for lower one; most of the other demons got backstories (except for arrow hand dude I guess) and this guy seemed interesting

I never did get very far in Berseria. Now this is coming out, and Berseria is worth a fraction of what I paid for it. I still want to know what the deal was with killing the kid in the beginning.

This is kind of like... the guiding plot point of the whole game so you gotta play it to find out! It's kind of like saying "I never did get very far in Titanic, I kind of want to know what the deal was with that big ol diamond."

Disclaimer: I could do the kids version where it's a long jump rope spun by other people, and I jump in on rhythm in the middle. Yes, I can do that.

Also not sure what you guys mean about no more end battle quotes cuz there was one part after a fight ended where it had the pink haired girls face portrait in the bottom left with some text next to it. So it seems like they'll still be there, just you'll get to move around during it. I guess that means you won't get any silly animations to go with them but those were pretty few and far between anyway

That's the problem. I'm not willing to ignore the facts and details and just blanket literally every single case as "They shouldn't have shot." The individual facts and details matter. If somebody's trying to murder somebody else, than I'm obviously going to treat them being shot differently than I would somebody unarmed and fleeing getting shot.

If people continue to have the attitude that "it's okay for cops to shoot bad people/criminals" then nothing is ever going to change. I think there is a difference in the two situations for sure, but in order to treat the cause you kind of have to treat them as symptoms of the same disease.

Yeah. Debating about whether or not the shooting was justified misses the point in that we shouldn't be training cops to swoop in like superheroes with guns to save the day. I know that seems counter-intuitive to a lot of the U.S.'s cultural programming.
