I thought it was basically the same, except with anime cutscenes and longer loading times, but it seems like it's almost a full-on remake.

I've never played the PS1 version. I remember hearing bad things about it (possibly inferior loading times or music), but I'm not sure how true they were. I could be thinking of FFVI. I'll try it one of these days.

I've really enjoyed the SNES version whenever I've played it. The encounter rate is high, but I can usually tolerate that.

Of the Tales games I've played, it's just behind Symphonia, Abyss and Vesperia.

Super Metroid, Metroid Fusion, Metroid Prime (Fusion isn't my idea of a perfect Metroid game, but it's a great game nonetheless)

Pokemon Red got me *really* into games.

I'd played them for a number of years before that (mostly SNES/GEN/GB games, and a few on NES/SMS), but just casually, and much of the time at friends'/relatives' houses. I had a GEN and GB myself. In hindsight, as good as the Genesis was, the SNES games probably floated my boat more, particularly RPGs and Action/Adventure games. I liked anything with a detailed world to explore, hence Pokemon capturing my imagination.

There are many soundtracks that could fill that position.

My favorite tracks are probably the more somber / 'chill' / relaxing ones (although I do like more upbeat tracks like those in Castlevania too), and I think Xenoblade is the best for that. Hometown, Refugee Camp, Colony 9, Satorl Marsh, Eryth Sea, Alcamoth, Agniratha, etc.

Chrono Trigger and Legend of Mana (and Final Fantasy), among others, excel at those too.

I could only speculate as to the reasons for this. Probably bias from healthcare professionals (which could materialize in many ways), but I doubt it's just that. Maybe ignorance about specific medical issues black mothers-to-be-face. And poverty of course.
