Hydro electric plants also have some downsides.

I learned all this from Sim City 2000. Maybe of the Texas politicians played it too they wouldn't be having these blackout problems.

Anyone in Texas, I stress this, leave at least 3 faucets running on a fast drip, kitchen, bathroom especially. If it costs you an extra $5 on your water bill, it's a hell of a lot cheaper than what you will deal with if your pipes freeze. They can explode in those conditions, resulting in a much worse repair. I know this is pretty common knowledge closer to the North, but you guys don't experience freezing like this hardly ever.

Yep... this is especially true since almost no houses in Texas have basements. Uninsulated crawlspaces are where pipes burst the easiest.

As a homeowner, I've quickly learned that simple plumbing repairs are something that EVERYONE should learn how to do. Skilled tradesmen will happily come over and charge you $300 for a leaky faucet when you could probably fix it in like 10 minutes with the right parts, tools, and know-how. It's definitely not rocket science either.

So why risk it?

I didn't say you were selfish for having kids, I said you were selfish for that being a core reason for having kids. I figure people generally have them for the thrill of bringing another life into the world, not for what they themselves could get out of it.

And no, I have never taken care of a family member on hospice. My mom's parents were both in Jamaica when they passed and both my parents are in their early 60s.

And it's completely reasonable to not want to have kids because they don't have the financial means to. Like I already said, not everyone is mentally equipped to have children. And certainly not everyone on here. I don't think you quite understand just how difficult it is and how much of a commitment it is to raise a child if you're really this appalled at someone not being willing to do so.

Well, I do understand how hard it is since I have 3, one with special needs. I'm not appalled at people not wanting kids, I just think it's a bleak outlook if the next generation says the family is obsolete and there isn't any reason to have kids. It's kind of hard to make progress as a society that way.

To be fair, the effect on prices is a bit overstated, but minimum wage laws can have other negative effects such as less hours worked per low skilled worker, or less workers hired at low skill positions. Overall, the minimum wage does more harm than good imo because it reduces the supply of labor.

Yep. Look at Amazon werehouses. They pay a lot but demand insane productivity and fire anyone who doesn't work fast enough.

So now your "$10/hr" people who might be middle aged or slower will have an extremely hard time finding work. A small business owner might have 2 employees that earn $12 an hour could just fire both and have one person do double work for $15/hr.

I think I heard this from a right wing source, I'm not sure if it's true. But I heard China shut down domestic air travel once they learned about the virus, but freely allowed international flights in and out of their pandemic infested cities.

I've heard two stories about where the virus originated. I haven't kept up with the changing data, so maybe someone could help me out.

One story is that the virus originated from a lab, where the impoverished lab-workers would make money on the side by selling dead lab animals to street vendors.

Another story, (and one I find more likely) is that the virus originated from a giant "wet market" where animals are literally stacked in cages on top of each other, pooping on each other, and spreading germs and diseases. It was this meat market where the virus made the leap from animal to human.

When you're not tied down to any 1 place just the thought of settling down in a location for life is such a foreign concept to me that I cant even wrap my head around it.

Dude, getting a mortgage isn't settling down. I became a home owner less than 6 years ago and I'm signing my 3rd mortgage Monday next week. With all the online banks letting you e-sign everything it's so easy. You still have to actually move your stuff, but how is that any different than having an apartment? I've made over $100,000 in equity in those 5 years, and my monthly mortgage rate has been less than most people's rent around here. I started with $7K for a down payment back in 2015

Also, it's true that saving for a down payment can be hard. But in some ways its easier to qualify for a mortgage now than it's ever been. My parents (both boomers) couldn't buy a house because the interest rates were in the 15%-20% range! Because of that, I grew up in a trailer park.
