The snow itself isn't so bad although I've seen a lot of drivers biting off more than they can chew.

The power outages however are devastating in these frigid temperatures. And now water outages.

Do they not have gas heat? I thought Texas was the land of oil and gas.

Last time our power went off I just flipped on the gas logs and turned on the oven for a little while (with door open). Super toasty in no time. And yes I have CO detectors.

None of the infrastructure is built to withstand this kind of cold.

So all it took to defeat the mighty, and implacable state of Texas was 5 centimeters of snow?

People bitching act like power outages never happen in the northern states where it snows every winter or that the power is back on an hour later when it does go out and not days and sometimes stretching into weeks later. And that's with areas that are used to this shit and things are planned for and built accordingly.

Texas stood no chance against this. A few million people without power is a fucking lot, there is only so much that can be done at any one time. Its not like there is an unlimited amount of people with the training to fix this shit.

A state with such a poor power grid and mismanaged wildlife that it needs to turn off people's electricity everytime it gets warm or the entire state would burn down again.

Anyone in Texas, I stress this, leave at least 3 faucets running on a fast drip, kitchen, bathroom especially. If it costs you an extra $5 on your water bill, it's a hell of a lot cheaper than what you will deal with if your pipes freeze. They can explode in those conditions, resulting in a much worse repair. I know this is pretty common knowledge closer to the North, but you guys don't experience freezing like this hardly ever.

Also we need to invest tens of billions of dollars in modernizing and improving our grid nationwide.

I was talking more the people who are actually from Texas saying the power should be back on by now. Because restoring power to a few million people is as simple as flipping a light switch apparently.

Yep... this is especially true since almost no houses in Texas have basements. Uninsulated crawlspaces are where pipes burst the easiest.

As a homeowner, I've quickly learned that simple plumbing repairs are something that EVERYONE should learn how to do. Skilled tradesmen will happily come over and charge you $300 for a leaky faucet when you could probably fix it in like 10 minutes with the right parts, tools, and know-how. It's definitely not rocket science either.

Because they basically don't? I lived in AK 16 years, and MN for 10. I can count on one hand the number of times the power went out for more than a half hour due to snow and still have enough fingers left to make a proper fist.
