@Yazarogi

Here's another thing: in the official Total Recall OST, the opening soundtrack for the credits is called "The Dream."
What if the entire movie is a dream? Quaid's lucid dream about a life greater than the one he is living. And at the end he just wakes up, back to the normalcy of the regular world, like all of us.

If Arnold continues to be happy in that world, then it's a reality. But if there's an end, it's a dream. When a dream is eternal and realistic enough, there's no real difference between it and reality.

Interesting take, I've often contemplated Total Recall on a philosophical basis. It really boils down to experience. People ask: was it real? Well, what is "real?" If Quaid experienced it, isn't that real? And as you said, even if it's a "dream," its ontological nature would depend on its termination.

Here's my exact theory on why it's a dream / simulation theory.

I feel it was all a delusion, but that it didn't go down properly. I think he really did suffer a "schizoid embolism," and that his mind basically was playing out a free-form delusion based on Rekall's memory tapes, as the doctor explains on Mars. In fact, that doctor tells Quaid that if he refuses to swallow the red pill, and kill the doctor, he will be stuck in permanent psychosis, and -- get this -- the doctor says, quote:

The walls of reality will come crashing down (they literally do, immediately after Quaid shoots the doc in the head)
One minute, you'll be the savior of the rebel cause (this happens)
Then the next thing you know, you'll be Cohaagen's bosom buddy (again, this happens, as Quaid realizes Hauser planned the whole thing with Cohaagen)
You'll even have fantasies about alien civilizations, as you requested (this is also true, considering the whole alien technology, ice-melting contraption thing)

And finally: But in the end, back on Earth, you'll be lobotomized!

Perhaps that's why the film ends with a fade to white, rather than a fade to black. Quaid is waking up in the emergency room following his lobotomy.

I *thought* it was confirmed to be a dream somewhere by the director?

AFAIK, the director said it's intentionally ambiguous, but Arnold believes it was all a dream.

Makes you wonder why certain areas become hotspots for suicides. Is there something about its structure, some aesthetic value, that appeals to people who are contemplating suicide? Or is it just something that builds organically, or by coincidence, until eventually suicidal people feel a rapport with those who have committed the same deed in that same place, feeling as though they are becoming one of a brotherhood or sisterhood. I dunno. It's very sad nonetheless.

During the scene when Dr. Edgemar from Rekall visits Quaid at the hotel on Mars, and is trying to explain to him that Quaid is suffering a free-form delusion, and that the doctor is actually monitoring Quaid from the psycho-probe console back on Earth.

Remember the red pill? The doctor says it's a symbol of Quaid's desire to return to reality, and it will snap him out of his schizoid embolism.

OK, so... after the doctor explains to Quaid what will happen if Quaid kills the doctor, the doctor says: "Now take the pill and put it in your mouth."

If the doctor was really there in the room with Quaid, that line is sort of weird, since the doctor was standing right in front of Quaid, and saw that Quaid had the pill in his hand. All he had to say was "Now put the pill in your mouth."

The specific line "Now take the pill and put it in your mouth" to me sounds like something the doctor would say if he was actually telling the truth; he's at Rekall, monitoring Quaid, and doesn't know exactly how everything looks inside Quaid's mind, he just knows there's a red pill at the moment, doesn't necessarily know if Quaid is holding it, so he says "Now take the pill and put it in your mouth."

Very subtle syntax, IMO. Thoughts?

When Han was about to be carbon frozen, Boba Fett asked Vader about if Han died, because Han was worth a lot to Fett. Vader responded: "The Empire will compensate you if he dies." True?

I say yes. Vader was ruthless, but he must have realized the impracticality of not compensating Boba Fett if Han had died. Any bounty hunter would not have any trust in the Empire, so it would be much more difficult for Vader and the Emperor to secure the services of a bounty hunter.

I look at this as a similar situation to The Phantom Menace, when Qui-Gon Jinn threatens to take the issue with Watto to Jabba the Hutt. The Hutts couldn't care less about the specific bet, only the fact that Watto was trying to renege on it. You gotta make sure people keep up their end of the bargain.

In the Empire Strikes Back, Han decided to direct the Millennium Falcon's power to the front shield and face the pursuing Star Destroyer head on. C-3PO begins to say "Sir, the odds of surviving a direct assault on an Imperial Star Destroyer--" at which point Leia says "Shut up!"

What do you think the odds actually would've been? (Keeping in mind that Han didn't actually go through with attacking; just cleverly attached the Falcon to the side of the Star Destroyer.)

For me personally, it's the binary sunset in ANH. Not a very long scene at all, and there are no words, but it's perfect. The music, the visual, the expression on Luke's face, it speaks to all of us, to every person who has ever felt deep down that there must be something more to their existence, something greater that's out there, no longer wanting to resign themselves to a life of habit and normalcy.

In particular, the return of Darth Sidious.

In the PT, when Palpatine promises Anakin that together they will learn the secret to cheating death, a power only one had achieved, we are eventually left assuming that Palpatine is lying outright--only using that promise as a way to lure in Anakin, who wants to save his wife from dying.

What we don't know, however, is whether Palpatine already knew how to cheat death, or if he continued to study those secrets even after Anakin turned, keeping it a secret from Vader.

The fact that it all comes full circle at the end, with Sidious even quoting himself about the Dark Side and its powers allowing you to achieve things that are unnatural, to me is a really cool way of tying the whole story together.

It all started as an apparent ruse, then we realize Sidious was actually working on it behind the scenes and achieved it.
