3 was okay, but a bit overcomplicated by requiring connection to the "home city" as a gameplay mechanic. I enjoyed it, but it obviously didn't take off like 2 did.

I never cared much for them either. It mostly seems like a cop out just so an author can have a good guy that can do Sith powers and be an anti-hero. It seems very tabletop/video gamey as well.
Yeah, that's what gave us Kyle Katarn and Galen "Starkiller" Marek. I give them a pass because they're video games and fun to play as, but trying to fit them into Star Wars as a story requires some muddying in the history of what they "actually" did compared to what the player has the freedom of doing.

A grey jedi is not what was described in post #9
lol you might as well be saying "that's not what centrism really is". In the end, this is only your point of view of what you believe a "Grey Jedi" should be. Do you have any examples?

RiKuToTheMiGhtY posted...
Grey jedi do not give in to the darkside but they do use dark side abilities, and are willing to kill rather then arrest someone.
You are literally describing things actual Jedi have done.

What I'm saying is that every time they tried to push the idea of a "neutral Force-user", that's what we ended up getting.

The books (though probably none of it canon anymore) had this going on.
Yeah that's my point. I'm not saying it was all great writing, but at least they tried to imply there's a galaxy out there beyond the Jedi. You had the Jensaarai, the White Current, and a lot of ancient orders.

EDIT: Oh yeah. The Witches of Dathomir. They were Force-sensitive in Legends. In the new Canon they just have... magic. I guess it's implied to be connected to the Force, but I don't recall it ever outright stated.

The new canon has been very hesitant to branch out. The Bendu was the closest they got, and it was basically implied that it was more of a predecessor-type than a separate group.

Lucas was very pointed in declaring that there is the LIGHT SIDE and the DARK SIDE and that is IT and there's NO IN BETWEEN.

I've always much preferred the idea that there are multiple groups of Force users out there in the galaxy and calling everything "x Jedi" was kind of an insult because it implies that the there's no Force without the Jedi.

But anyway...

"Grey Jedi" as a concept always boils down to a grumpy person who's strong in the Force who hides out in a remote world so no one can bother them and are really powerful in the Force but either refuse to use it or only use it for themselves to be left alone. The protagonists of whatever story meet them and they're always like "nooo I don't wanna get involved I just wanna sit on this barren rock and do nothing".

And it's funny because whether it's Jolee Bindo or the Bendu from Rebels, they always end up doing something that ends up helping the protagonists, so how "grey" can they really be when you get down to it.

When you think about it it's basically the idea of a "Force centrist". Sounds like a neat concept but really can't be well-executed for the same reasons that centrism isn't well-executed.
