Oh, there were a few good reasons.

1. It was marketed wrong, putting much more emphasis on the GamePad than anything else, and along with the name made people believe that it was a mere tablet add-on for the Wii. Calling the system "Wii 2" to begin with would have much better gotten the point across.
2. Even that aside, most of the casuals who bought the Wii moved on to mobile games, which blew up tremendously in the years since the Wii's launch, so that well was unavailable for Nintendo.
3. Developers had to mind the GamePad, so porting games over from PS3 and X360 wasn't as simple of a task.
4. It launched when the PS4 and the XBOne were on the way, so most other companies would shift focus towards those consoles in short order, and the Wii U wasn't nearly powerful enough to handle ports of PS4 and XBOne games, cutting off the supply of third party support that was promised early on. They would much rather develop for much more powerful--and successful--consoles, without also having to worry about the GamePad.

But as we all know, the Switch has been a runaway hit globally, so you won't be seeing Mario and Zelda games on Playstation or Xbox any time soon.

Or, almost no point.

Because of the fact that you can only earn up to 50 Coins via ingame means a day. So if you leave a Pokemon in a Gym long enough to get those 50 Coins before it gets knocked out, and then another Pokemon you have at a Gym also gets knocked out, those extra 50 Coins that you would have also gotten from the second Pokemon just goes away. Hell, you may not even get the full 50 amount if you already got less than 50 Coins beforehand the same day.

And probably more insulting is that holding a Gym for several days is pointless, since the 50 Coins don't stack for each day your Pokemon holds the Gym, so even if it's at the Gym for two weeks--which should theoretically get you 700 Coins--you only get 50 Coins when they finally return. ...Or you may even get less than that or none at all if you already received Coins the day they come back.

Even worse is that you can't manually remove your Pokemon from a Gym once you put it there; it's stuck there until it's defeated in battle, so you can't withdraw your Pokemon to get those 50 Coins, instead having to let it sit there and waste time when there's no benefit in it being there for that long.

Honestly, it's pretty scummy, and is clearly intended to make people actually spend money on Coins. But I really don't see the harm in at least letting the coins stack for each day the Pokemon is at a Gym. But maybe I'm trying to look at a money-siphoning mobile game through the lens of someone who grew up and still regularly plays traditional games.
