Well, what I was getting at is that it's the status quo to the point where any deviation from it is considered political. There was a B8 topic a year or so ago complaining about 'forced' diversity in games and none of the complainers could answer why they thought a character being gay 'for the sake of it' was bad when gay people are naturally occurring in real life. Side example is that I've heard comments from non-white people who have said that they got so used to playing white dudes in games that the added customization games are adding these days can make them feel uncomfortable for not playing as a white dude.

Sure you can. Someone spared the death penalty is likely still going to prison for life and will live out their rest of their days in rehabilitation. Trump living through COVID and winning re-election means he suffers no consequences and continues to kill and rob Americans as he pleases. Not at all equivalent scenarios.

Best-case scenario is that he lives, barely, after several weeks of being out of commission and unable to directly influence the election, and is too weak to put up the strong front that matters so much to his fanbase and also can't reasonably downplay getting COVID.

I question how much FFRemake will have helped Sephiroth. He played a prominent role at the end but I don't think it was in a way people liked, and in general it's hard for the Badass Cool Villain archetype to wow us anymore.

Cloud, Tifa, and Aerith are going to make healthy gains though. And Barret too maybe I guess.

I hope one day we'll be able to openly to call people in power like Trump the rapists (numerous charges of this, close ties with Epstein) and murderers (specifically withheld COVID aid to hurt blue states, in addition to downplaying it as much as possible) that they are without fear of having people go "Woah, woah, slow down".

Nobody's joining (or has joined) the Isaac push for a very long time. It's consistently been Golden Sun fans and nothing else because the Smash fanbase is anathema to anime swordsman and RPGs they haven't played. He's not a character where you look at him and go "Yeah, he should get in!" unless you're a personal Golden Sun fan. It's very easy to attach yourself to K.Rool bandwagon because he has a unique design and comes from a series you know. I'd say significantly more people have supported K.Rool and not played a Donkey Kong game than people who supported Isaac and never played Golden Sun.

Like you're acting like Isaac has this big bandwagon going on when the most recent poll has him at 13th. People gave up a while back once the Assist Trophy came out.

K. Rool was getting a push long before that. The moment that Robin and Lucina revealed, actually. I can't express how much that day changed the trajectory of the Smash fanbase. People simply could not deal with the fact that Fire Emblem had more representation than Donkey Kong (and Zelda, and Metroid...) and it hasn't gotten any better since then!

He also got a fairly big bump in popularity when Ridley was revealed as a boss battle in Smash 4. People somewhat gave up hope on Ridley, leading to K. Rool being the new push for villain representation in Smash. Then the Smash ballot dropped. He'd built up more legitimate fans by then, but most of it boiled down to extremely good timing and taking advantage of a situation.

Isaac was popular for longer, had been in more recent games, was barely less popular even at K. Rool's peak...but Japan doesn't like Golden Sun that much so he was doomed from the start. As far as the US fanbase goes, he's always had equal claim to representation as Banjo does using all the metrics Smash fans trot out. He was two games (then three! one more than Banjo, even!) years that sold about the same.

Dixie didn't do well because we already had Diddy, and frankly speaking people don't actually give two shits about any of the DK characters that aren't Donkey Kong. Diddy is easily the second-most popular in the series and his one contest claim to fame is this:

K. Rool got popular because he was an anti-meta pick - a villain with a unique design from a popular series with 'only' two characters in it. There was some lingering attachment from the games he was in and the cartoon and whatnot, but for a very long time he simply wasn't in the collective consciousness whatsoever.

Yeah I don't buy that in the slightest. I didn't seen a single person go "I want K Rool in Smash so he can get in the next Donkey Kong game!" and I was glued to the Smash fanbase for YEARS. It was a bandwagon, and easily the most successful in Smash history. People like him a lot now because they discovered the character for the first time and like him, but other than that he was minor.

Let me put it a different way: GameFAQs is a good barometer of Nintendo popularity, and Isaac at the peak of his strength demolishes K. Rool at the peak of his strength (pre-Ultimate).

This is 90% of the reason. "I want another Donkey Kong character" + "I want another villain in Smash" = K. Rool. People simply did not care about him until he became a character that ticked all the boxes to fill an obligatory Smash quota that fans put on themselves because they were salty Fire Emblem got more characters than their favorite series.

There was actual substance to it, as opposed to stuff like Isaac and Geno where the games they come from are long since dead and buried.

Isaac has been in more recent games than K. Rool has. The fact that you point out people want him to 'return' and then cite other characters as being 'dead and buried' is...not great logic.
