Man if every part of the map had the same personality and attention to detail as the Gerudo Village, my opinion of the game would be dramatically higher! You guys say the world is brimming with life but I mainly feel like it's pretty empty and boring outside of the villages.

And I like the villages a lot - one of the best moments I had in the game was discovering a tiny little fishing village when I was 80 hours or so in and getting bored of the game. I just wish they all had as much focus and compelling questlines as the Gerudo Village and Tarry Town, because the rest of it really ain't it for me.

So I keep getting mixed messaging, is this a looter game or not? Or is the Gotham one a looter?

If so, probably a hard pass from me. No interest at all in this genre.

We don't have a gameplay trailer for this one. It's possibly both? Both seem to have squad multiplayer elements. Apparently they have said it's still based on Arkham, but with guns.

We do have a gameplay trailer for Gotham Knights and it looks very much like an Arkham game, just with some weird Diablo/looter stuff tacked on. I dunno. It's really weird.

I voted Justice League because even though Man of Steel and BvS had some really garbage elements, there was still an obvious plan there being executed badly.

Justice League is like...acceptably bland, but to me that makes it way worse. They played it safe and it was still trash.

Publishers have gotta go digital singles and limited run TPBs, I think. But they've gotta find a way to get new readers to jump in too. If you're Marvel, I think you gotta create a subscription service that gives you online access and physical downloads to all comics (5 new issues released weekly) for $10 a month or as $5 added on to your Disney plus subscription. That might not be enough to actually make money, but you gotta build up a reader base somehow.

This is exactly my problem with the streaming service. It's a good idea but I dont think they can pull it off because it requires the company to dump tons of money into originals. I mean, look at Netflix. Comics have an advantage because they dont have to worry about the backlog issue, but because their backlog is so niche they're going to have a much harder time attracting that wider audience.

And with them going through layoffs and firing so many people that were taking creative risks if not financial risks...I mean, I just don't have any confidence they have the money or talent to pull that off. Like eddv says, that stuff doesn't sell so they cancel it, but you actually want all this weird shit MORE on streaming services.

But to piggyback on an earlier discussion, this is the kind of reason that arguments like "her record is very progressive" or "voted with Bernie 93% of the time" do not hold weight with some people. Someone without conviction will always be easily compromised into betraying ideals in favor of the path the leads them to power, which is serving power.

this dilemma goes away if the people take power into their own hands via direct action, forcing those without conviction to serve them!

It's a simple numbers game of which side of the party this policy benefits more, though. Also her positions on progressive policies and her attitude towards AOC these past two years says a lot as well, to put further context.

I don't expect anything different from her I just know it is not good in my view.

So is the ideal for the party as a whole to stay out of primaries and endorse whoever wins for the general or for them to be more selective with endorsements?

No, I was talking about that too. They brought in a lot of diverse creators when Luke Cage, Black Panthers, etc. were really big. They make books like Vision that are just wildly different than your standard hero fare. But they don't move the needle really. They get canceled faster than most books aside from anomalies like Ms. Marvel.

Vision didn't move the needle? That book won awards! On an anecdotal level, I know of a lot of love for a lot of series that were cancelled prematurely. And I can pretty much guarantee that someone like Tom King or Ta-Nehisi Coates or NK Jemisin is going to sell a lot more books as collected editions than floppies.

So it's a matter of perspective, you are seeing "these issues aren't selling well and got canned" and I see "oh, they didn't actually give these series a chance." It's not necessarily a matter of the creators but the overall Brand Management running directly up against the industry (no one fucking buys floppies, and yet, they determine what gets cancelled).

So what do you expect gets accomplished when they fire a huge amount of people who mostly had no say in the fact that no one fucking buys floppies? Again, the higher-ups sure but you're telling me 1/3 of the people at the company deserve the blame?

I want to add to my previous statement an agreement with HDT. If you are in a solidly blue area, no, you should not have to settle for a moderate. Getting more people like AOC into congress is important, if only to start a conversation about the benefits of progressivism and make it more mainstream, rather than some radical ideology. But on a national level, or even in areas that are more purple than red or blue, there needs to be some work on messaging if you want progressives to succeed.

Sure! And the point I was trying to make is that in these solid blue areas, they would probably identify as "mainstream Democrat" but still manage to elect progressives into office. It's much harder on a national level but I think the potential is definitely there. It's just not being framed that way because the Democratic party is not a monolith and a lot of Democrat politicians are opposed to the progressive side of the party. I don't think this holds as true for the voters, but voters are easily convinced by them.

Is it possible that the easy ability to binge past seasons works in TVs and streamings favor over needing to buy back issues or trades?

Or are the digital back-catalog-for-one-price services like Marvel Unlimited well advertised and performing well?

I think Marvel Unlimited does well enough, obviously DC's is struggling.

I dunno though if serial narratives and binging is the issue, I think it's just at a completely different scale and perception level. There's almost a century of comic backlog out there, and people feel the need that so much of it is required reading and there isn't necessarily a "book 1" to read in a linear manner. People can watch Game of Thrones where they're talking about obscure backstory details or watch Star Wars and shrug in response to the EU, but if a comic book references a past event people seem to think that's total bullshit.

Because they proved they have no capacity or ideas to improve it. They put a black female at the head of the whole thing now from outside of the industry. It doesn't get more diverse that. Maybe if she can provide a way to actually improve the industry outside of "Well let's just soft reboot again!" Or "What about this event book that changes everything!?" then maybe they can get some more people back into it.

Why give more money and more resources to people who clearly can't run it properly?

And in terms of diversity, they've made a ton of diverse hires and nothing has changed. That isn't the problem. It's that the people in charge couldn't find a way to improve profit and viewership in a time where we have a superhero boom. This should have been done a while ago.

Also, WB is in financial trouble, which is why they slashed a lot of their divisions in the first place. DC Comics aren't the only ones hit, but they've been hit harder than anyone else.

First of all I was talking about not only that but diversity in thought of leadership as you were, but diversity in that sense is a problem too. Namely in terms of reaching a broader audeince and having a wide array of books. Something DC was getting better at but slow to adapt on. Again, I'll bring up that SO MUCH of the money in comics right now is selling graphic novels to kids and young adults and not floppies for entrenched superhero fans, and that's why DC was making a big deal about their YA GN line. But I digress

The main point is that I don't think this is going to solve anything. I think it's a dumb decision and it's bad to defend. As mentioned a little in this topic, the issues comics are dealing with are way bigger than a handful of bad editors and writers. Some of these people at the top like Harras absolutely needed to go. But I can't understand these massive layoffs being justified. The people working for these comic companies know the industry and characters and could help with transitioning to whatever the hell Time Warner is doing so the PR memo just reads like corporate bullshit that's the latest in a long line of comics companies treating their employees like garbage.

To use a frivolous comic book analogy, this is like when they kill off the old team and promise you the ALL NEW! ALL DIFFERENT! version and it's the same shit. I'm highly skeptical that this will solve anything at all in terms of the industry. The holding company is just trying to make a quick buck.

The current progressive movement has a lot of good ideas, but the problem is that it's designed to appeal specifically to a younger crowd, and it doesn't do a great job of marketing its ideas to an older audience. And the thing about that strategy is that it relies heavily on picking up the notoriously poor youth vote in favor of casting aside a solid and reliable voter base. That's why Biden was able to swoop in and win the nomination...because the moderates who felt like Bernie's progressives didn't care about them coalesced around a moderate candidate, and those moderates made up a majority of the voter base.

I will say that in heavily blue areas (and maybe not even just heavy blue), progressives have been able to win primaries

It's just that America as a whole is not heavy blue, and also Bernie's campaign in particular really shit the bed on this one

My hot take is that all of these industry people have failed to capitalize when super hero stuff is at its most popular with the Marvel movies. That's pathetic and it's clear they needed to bring in someone outside of the industry to make moves to actually get people reading comics because they're all ridiculously insular and don't want to make any actual changes.

so why did Time Warner, a company worth tens of billions of dollars, lay off 1/3 of DC instead of simply hiring a larger and more diverse staff or perhaps put more money into a notoriously underfunded industey?

I just don't think this is true, the team sports effect hits both major parties

There are probably MORE D voters that settle or just give up and don't vote at all but reluctant support still happens for Republicans. The disparity between Trump's approval rating and people who say they'll vote for him anyways shows this.

Yeah, DC had basically found a way to have their cake and eat it too with the continuity issue. They basically made it a feature and not a bug and tied it into their events, and their events since Rebirth have largely been self-contained or restricted to a few series instead of massive things taking up real estate in every series. Meanwhile they also have their OGN and Wal-Mart lines designed to be more accessible and target other audiences. I thought the OGN line was supposed to be doing well but it also got canned from what I hear.

Hillary was a perfect villain for him to battle, so to speak, but they are running very much on Trump being the greatest of all timeeven if its not true, theyre not telling anyone to settle.

I don't dispute this is the message but I DO think a lot of GOP voters are settling.

If you ever read one of the 500 NYT pieces on Trump voters (don't do this I'm about to explain them all) there's always quotes upon quotes from people who think the Democratic platform will actually hurt them, or that they're very concerned about Trump but still feel obligated to vote, or the Christian evangelists who don't like Trump but on the other hand the Democrats are even more ungodly and we could really use more judges to stop abortion. It's taking a global pandemic to peel these people away (they still will probably come back though). I really don't think Trump has as many true believers as he and the media want us to think.

Hate to be the both sides guy but I guess it's very similar to Biden's "most progressive platform in history" thing

I can agree with the lot of that but I can't possibly understand what the expectation is (short of dismantling the government obviously). Everyone running for President is crazy. If Bernie Sanders isn't good enough (and I agree he still has the faults of a politician) then who is out here desperately searching for a principled politician? Maybe I'm just jaded now but I care less and less about "principles" and more about what a politician is offering and the leverage that can be exerted over them.

And while most everyone at the federal level is a career politician this isn't necessarily true at a local level within communities, although it can end up this way. I imagine this type of person is more likely to be involved at this level, and part of the issue is bridging the gap. But to do that we need people in office who will at least pretend to listen to demands.

Biden's VP doesn't matter to me and it shouldn't matter to anyone here. Biden is already a bad choice so his VP is irrelevant

this so much. I honestly can't imagine how Biden's VP is the decisive dealbreaker at this point. He would have to exert serious effort to pick someone worse than himself

Also let me attempt to engage with the original question to illustrate the point here

So I have a question about defunding and/or abolishing the Police. I lean liberal, but I don't understand this push personally. What exactly is the our proposed action for security and law enforcement if we have no police? I'm legit ignorant here and want to know what happens if the police are abolished from the USA.

The short answer is: we don't know! But that's because we don't possess the social technology needed to definitely say. To draw a point of comparison to climate change, if someone says "we need to stop using ALL fossil fuels" the common response is "how? We have no sufficient energy alternatives." In both cases, the solution is to develop that technology. And activists, community organizations, and indigenous people have been doing work to see what forms community-based "transformative justice" might take.

Here's an article you can read if you have time that might shed some light on that approach
https://www.bustle.com/rule-breakers/police-abolition-domestic-violence

The second thing is, we do know what the process of police abolition looks like, and it's basically exactly what Sir Chris and Reg said - you reallocate resources away from the police towards alternatives that will do a better job of solving the "problems" police aren't equipped to handle. And you keep doing this until you figure out the bare minimum resources you can give to police and have a safe society. Defund and Abolish are in agreement on this - they differ on the endpoint. Police abolitionists are pretty sure that we'll eventually get to the point where the best number of cops is zero, so they do this work with that in mind as the goal.

Yeah put me on team "yes, I would like to literally abolish the police."

It won't actually be possible without generations of social progress, though. You guys don't have to act so alarmed.

Well, of course you would compare it to the worst thing you could have instead of something of an equal weight. I mean, you are being pretty transparent here with your aim.

Humor me, Corrik. You seem to agree that murdering people is much more important and weighty than spitting in coffee since you're so offended that Inviso's counterpunch was too hard. So was coffee spit really important enough to post in the first place, or do you have some equally transparent aim?
