I remember when Christopher Hitchens came to the defense of his friend Stephen Fry in front of a group of Catholic leaders. He condemned the way the church had treated homosexuals and how it dealt with the issue of AIDS, and said he would fully trust Fry to watch his children, whereas if a clergyman showed up at his door to offer the same services, he would call first a taxi and then the police.

I cannot actually imagine a consistent and semi-coherent belief system that could straddle "both sides" perfectly. What and where the sides are doesn't seem to be clear anyway and changes with the wind.

That's because both parties are becoming more and more extreme as times goes on. Hopefully this will result in a viable third party emerging at some point.

It's not necessarily about accepting such values when they oppose your own view, it's about at least trying to understand why the opposing side agrees with such a thing. The lack of trying in this regard, by both sides, is what concerns me.

The important thing is that you've figured out a way to be superior to both.

This is part of the problem, the mindset that any particular group is "superior" to another. An earnest desire to understand viewpoints not entirely aligning with your own is what's needed to bridge the gap between different groups.

In day to day conversations, I hear people on the left and people on the right make the same claims about the opposing side. They bemoan a lack of open-mindedness, of objectivity, of a consideration of facts and the value of listening to the other side. Yet they almost inevitably fail to embody these principles themselves.

@Doe @Doe

The problem of the difference in composition of character for these two gentlemen is not immediately easy to solve, which necessitates a closer, analytical look. This is, of course, to negate those readily ascertained answers that by their very ease and simplicity prove their dearth of meaning. An epic of such length as Tom Jones deserves a satisfactory investigation concomitant to the overall cultural impact of the work. Prior to finishing the novel, a reader may surmise that Fielding intended to express a conviction regarding nobility and the innate flaw in class hierarchies. Ultimately, it is revealed that both Tom Jones and Blifil share the same mother, casting doubt on interpretations centered on the implications of consanguinity. Another, more general and philosophical solution, hinges on the notion that the nature of a man is inexorably fixed toward one or another inclination. These inborn proclivities are perhaps implied by Fielding's invocation of Nature. While describing Mr. Allworthy, for example, Fielding writes that from [Nature] he derived an agreeable person, a sound constitution, a solid understanding, and a benevolent heart (31). Benevolence, according to Fielding, can be an inborn trait. This expands the consideration of characterization and moral framework to include even ontological aspects of good and evil, for if a man is fashioned by Nature to be good, rather than choosing to be good on his own volition while railing against the personal demons, passions and desires that plague all, the veracity of that goodness must then be called into question. For all her importance in this regard, Nature herself is mentioned dozens of times throughout Tom Jones; she appears, for example, as a whisper in the ear of Sophia that there may be trouble when confronted alone by Tom (145). Indeed, in such cases, Nature seems to be analogous to instinct in the novel, and it is true that individuals as well as entire groups and archetypes are granted certain Nature according to Fieldings narrator. This interpretation of one's Nature, as an ancillary force working alongside one's psyche, rather than as the unavoidable blueprint of one's moral compass, seems to lend itself to a more pleasing acceptance.

The notion that someone's death could absolve me of all responsibility is a horrible moral framework in which to live. Expiation of one's sins comes from a recognition of wrongdoing and an earnest desire to make amends, not by embracing a "get out of jail free" card that offers no discernible veracity to an outsider.

If the OP is referring to a suicide attempt, first of all let me preface this by saying that I know words of advice are pretty empty when someone is in your state of mind. Depression has been described as being colorblind while everyone else tells you how colorful the world is.

That being said, I can only encourage you to reflect on the things that bring you joy or, at the very least, distract you from the demons that plague your well-being. If you can think of even one thing that does this, devote yourself to it. Dive in. Become an expert. Strive to become the best.
