Topic | Dems need too figure out how to institutionally suppress votes next time |
ElatedVenusaur 11/03/20 11:23:52 AM #10 | Nah, they have to get serious about promoting voting and making it as quick, easy, and convenient as possible. |
Topic | Election Day General: Part 1 |
ElatedVenusaur 11/03/20 11:22:14 AM #44 | I voted absentee, and dropped off my ballot a few weeks ago. +1 to Howie Hawkins in CT, for what it matters I worry what Trump will do when he loses, and what Biden will do if Trump tries to steal it. |
Topic | ICE tried to deport witness to forced hysterectomies, who is a citizen |
ElatedVenusaur 11/02/20 7:52:09 PM #5 | It was only a matter of time before they tried to deport literal citizens for opposing them. |
Topic | Arizona just turned red on predictit |
ElatedVenusaur 11/02/20 7:07:22 PM #15 | darkprince45 posted... Its basically down to PAI wouldn't say that: Biden can win without it, but Trump basically can't. So if PA gets called for Biden relatively quickly, that would be a strong tell that Trump is going to lose. |
Topic | Why is the SC senate race getting so much national coverage? |
ElatedVenusaur 11/02/20 7:05:37 PM #10 | NinjaWarrior455 posted... Are their chances of flipping that seat much better than the seats in GA or AZ?No. Arizona seems like a likely pick-up, and the polling in Georgia for both seats is better. It's a bit further back than Iowa, but a better chance than stuff like Texas or Alaska. |
Topic | Is Trump the worst US president in your lifetime? |
ElatedVenusaur 11/02/20 6:55:24 PM #37 | Bush is definitely worse, but at this point I think we can say that's a function of him having two terms. |
Topic | Why is the SC senate race getting so much national coverage? |
ElatedVenusaur 11/02/20 6:53:55 PM #7 | It's a surprisingly competitive race and Lindsey Graham is one of the most transparently contemptible figures in politics, who obsequiously and obsessively kisses Trump's ring after pretending Trump was uniquely horrible and unworthy of support right up until Trump won the Republican nomination. I mean, even Ted Cruz is less pathetic in his toadying. Ted "Zodiac Killer" "Wasps in an elaborate Man-Shaped Nest" Cruz. |
Topic | orphan black is like game of thrones if every character was played by daenerys |
ElatedVenusaur 11/01/20 9:57:20 PM #3 | DarthAragorn posted... Yeah except Tatiana Maslany can actually actYeah, Tatiana Maslany is fantastic and also the only reason to watch that show past Season 3. |
Topic | Republican primaries will be crazy next cycle |
ElatedVenusaur 11/01/20 8:57:00 PM #18 | There will definitely be a Trump involved. Probably Tom Cotton and Josh Hawley as well. Maybe Nikki Haley and maybe Marco Rubio or Rick Scott. |
Topic | Peggy Hill is a top tier character... |
ElatedVenusaur 10/31/20 11:38:46 PM #30 | Yeah, the show definitely weakens later on. Peggy is great though, even though she's not particularly likeable. We all know some one like that, but Peggy does, at times, demonstrate sufficient intelligence to suggest she should probably know better. She doesn't though, because she is Peggy Hill! Bill, on the other hand, is just straight-up pathetic. You can be repulsed or disgusted by Bill, but you can't hate him. Certainly never as much as he hates himself. Cotton is similar, in that he's a transparently terrible person, but he's so funny and his genuine affection for Bobby is just humanizing enough that you can't hate him. |
Topic | What's been your most played game of October? |
ElatedVenusaur 10/31/20 11:12:36 AM #8 | Total War: Three Kingdoms. I'm bad at it, haven't played a Total War since Rome, but managed to get my first Heroic Victory a few days ago |
Topic | What happens if a US President refuses to concede? |
ElatedVenusaur 10/31/20 11:01:18 AM #17 | https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2020/11/what-if-trump-refuses-concede/616424/ The Atlantic did a lengthy article on it. The key point for Trump would(will?) be getting the Supreme Court to disqualify enough ballots for him to credibly declare victory(and for voting on election day to be in his favor). There's really no mechanism for forcing a president out, and every step of the process is handled by partisan actors. If Trump doesn't try out, some other Republican undoubtedly will. Personally, I think Trump is too lazy to seriously try, and will fail if he does, because he has done a great job of alienating virtually everyone. |
Topic | Do you like deer meat? |
ElatedVenusaur 10/31/20 12:32:30 AM #21 | Venison is delicious, yes. Nice and lean too. Rabbit's also delicious. I had alligator nuggets one time and remember them being good. But, then, I love trying new things. |
Topic | I am so sick of Democrats saying "Don't trust the polls!" |
ElatedVenusaur 10/30/20 1:01:02 PM #12 | All of this puts vastly more importance on the individual votes of individual voters in a presidential election than actually exists. If all you do is vote every 2-4 years, you're not meaningfully participating. |
Topic | Glenn Greenwald resigns from The Intercept |
ElatedVenusaur 10/29/20 10:55:10 PM #28 | I mean, Greenwald is right insofar as traditional media outlets definitely do privilege certain stories and narratives regardless of merit. Its just that theres not much merit to the Hunter Biden story beyond boilerplate elite malfeasance thats already received more than enough coverage. Greenwald would probably be a better journalist if he wasnt so full of himself. |

Topic | Why does DC struggle so hard making a connected live action universe? |
ElatedVenusaur 10/28/20 11:31:00 AM #16 | There are two reasons. The first being, as people have said, that they were impatient. They went directly from a Superman stand-alone film to Batman vs. Superman and then to Justice League. Snyder wasn't the best pick for the job, but booting him out in favor of Joss Whedon only led Justice League to be worse. The second problem is Batman. They just can't let Batman go. They made the one Superman film, and already by the "second" he's being given second billing to Batman, and also they just had to rehash his origin story. Everybody goddamned knows Batman's origin story, don't waste time in an ensemble movie on it! They're not going to stop making Batman movies, of course, but at least let the others have their own movies, free of his influence, doing their own things. Let them be their own characters with their own vibes, like they eventually did with Wonder Woman(and that worked really well, critically and commercially!) |
Topic | what some theories about cartoons you hate? |
ElatedVenusaur 10/27/20 10:24:46 PM #16 | The better King of the Hill one is that Dale knows about Nancys affair with John Redcorn, he just doesnt care and plays dumb for everyone elses benefit. |
Topic | Why exactly does SCOTUS have so much power? |
ElatedVenusaur 10/27/20 4:20:26 PM #15 | More or less the same reason the president does: Congress has grown increasingly impotent, and the Democrats in particularly are deeply reluctant to rock the boat in any way. The Court as the Founders envisioned wasn't this powerful: it just seized on a fairly prosaic matter of whether William Marbury's appointment to a circuit court was valid even though the Secretary of State had failed to have the commission physically delivered to him(he was suing Secretary of State James Madison, on the grounds it was his constitutional duty to execute the commission of the previous president) to give itself the power to strike down laws it deemed unconstitutional. Of course, that sort of thing just organically happens in any system. Ours; however, seems overwhelmed by inertia. It is increasingly difficult to imagine anything happening within the bounds of the Constitution(and current political norms) that would resolve the growing crisis of legitimacy this creates. |

Topic | When Social Security is gone what will happen? |
ElatedVenusaur 10/26/20 9:28:15 AM #6 | In what sense? If the Social Security Administration burns through its reserves, it will only be able to pay out what its getting in, leading to a dramatic reduction in benefits. If it gets abolished, old people will have to work until they are literally unable to and then be completely(as opposed to mostly) dependent on family unless theyre rich. |

Topic | Why is the US still having 70,000+ corona cases 7 months later? |
ElatedVenusaur 10/24/20 11:10:59 AM #18 | We have had almost no federally-coordinated response, and an entire political party has dedicated itself to downplaying the severity of the pandemic and politicizing mask-wearing. There's also the (unique to the U.S. in relation to European nations) fact that medical care is exorbitantly-expensive at point-of-care for most, and thus many avoid it until/unless they're seriously ill. |
Topic | Young people are voting their asses off |
ElatedVenusaur 10/24/20 10:59:52 AM #13 | They did so in the primaries too, they just got swamped by Boomers, there being more people of that age range than any other. Still, higher turnout is good, in and of itself. We need to have early voting to continue to be a widespread thing. |
Topic | Was the Iranian Revolution a good thing or bad thing, for the Iranian people? |
ElatedVenusaur 10/24/20 10:19:49 AM #7 | The Shah was a horrible oppressive monster(installed with our help because Mossadegh nationalized the oil industry). The Shah managed to unite the opposition against him, and the clerics had a ton of pull in rural areas and a charismatic leader. Even so, it's important to note that the revolution was not entirely unsuccessful for other groups: Iran is, after all, semi-democratic, even if the clerics can (and occasionally do) overrule the civilian authorities and you have the occasional stolen election and brutal suppression of popular protests(*laughs nervously in American*). So not the best, but it could definitely be a lot worse. Like, it's possible the system could become more democratic in a gradual, organic way. |

ElatedVenusaur 10/24/20 1:03:25 AM #15 | Galaga is great, because it never feels cheap. You always know you could have lived if you had moved the other way, or moved faster. Plus it has the silly mechanic with the captured ships that wouldnt be worth doing if it werent so damned cool. |
Topic | If real sugar was good enough in soda why'd they move over to HFCS? |
ElatedVenusaur 10/24/20 12:21:16 AM #11 | DEKMStephens posted... Yeah sugar cane needs more tropical climates whereas HFCS presumably comes from corn which can be grown in most of the US right?Plus the US subsidizes corn out the wazoo, so it's dirt cheap. It's why some companies tried so hard to make corn ethanol a thing, and why we feed it to livestock even when they should probably be eating something else. |
Topic | Is Antifa a group or movement? |

Topic | CE you doing EARLY Voting? or did it already? |
ElatedVenusaur 10/23/20 11:15:51 PM #4 | I already did it: CT, for the first time ever, has excuse-free* absentee voting. I dropped my ballot off at the drop box outside my town hall weeks ago(they're sturdy metal boxes painted with a big state seal and emblazoned in big, bold font: "Drop off ballots here": impossible to miss). It really needs to stay a thing going forward. Voting being difficult, time-consuming, and otherwise suppressed is not just a red-state thing, unfortunately. *Technically, your excuse is "COVID-19", which anyone can check for any reason. |

Topic | Why are people who are around 80 still politicians? |
ElatedVenusaur 10/23/20 1:24:50 PM #27 | It is reflective of the stagnancy of our politics, that virtually all the important figures in government are septuagenarians, most of whom have been in politics for decades. Like, Kamala Harris at 56 years old qualifies as an injection of youth into our political system. |
Topic | Vice: In Early GameFAQs, the Subtext Was Often Sexism |
ElatedVenusaur 10/23/20 10:49:30 AM #88 | It's a little weird to single out GameFAQs, but then, it still exists and it sounds like the author of the piece actually used this site, so that would explain. In any case, there's always been a ton of sexism here, casual and not-so-casual, and I'm sure it exists to an extent in every male-dominated space, because it's a societal issue. |
