It's a surprisingly competitive race and Lindsey Graham is one of the most transparently contemptible figures in politics, who obsequiously and obsessively kisses Trump's ring after pretending Trump was uniquely horrible and unworthy of support right up until Trump won the Republican nomination.

I mean, even Ted Cruz is less pathetic in his toadying. Ted "Zodiac Killer" "Wasps in an elaborate Man-Shaped Nest" Cruz.

Yeah, the show definitely weakens later on. Peggy is great though, even though she's not particularly likeable. We all know some one like that, but Peggy does, at times, demonstrate sufficient intelligence to suggest she should probably know better. She doesn't though, because she is Peggy Hill!

Bill, on the other hand, is just straight-up pathetic. You can be repulsed or disgusted by Bill, but you can't hate him. Certainly never as much as he hates himself.

Cotton is similar, in that he's a transparently terrible person, but he's so funny and his genuine affection for Bobby is just humanizing enough that you can't hate him. At the same time, he totally deserved getting dunked on by Peggy on his deathbed.

https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2020/11/what-if-trump-refuses-concede/616424/
The Atlantic did a lengthy article on it. The key point for Trump would(will?) be getting the Supreme Court to disqualify enough ballots for him to credibly declare victory(and for voting on election day to be in his favor).
There's really no mechanism for forcing a president out, and every step of the process is handled by partisan actors. If Trump doesn't try out, some other Republican undoubtedly will.

Personally, I think Trump is too lazy to seriously try, and will fail if he does, because he has done a great job of alienating virtually everyone.

There are two reasons. The first being, as people have said, that they were impatient. They went directly from a Superman stand-alone film to Batman vs. Superman and then to Justice League. Snyder wasn't the best pick for the job, but booting him out in favor of Joss Whedon only led Justice League to be worse.

The second problem is Batman. They just can't let Batman go. They made the one Superman film, and already by the "second" he's being given second billing to Batman, and also they just had to rehash his origin story. Everybody goddamned knows Batman's origin story, don't waste time in an ensemble movie on it!

They're not going to stop making Batman movies, of course, but at least let the others have their own movies, free of his influence, doing their own things. Let them be their own characters with their own vibes, like they eventually did with Wonder Woman(and that worked really well, critically and commercially!)

TopicWhy exactly does SCOTUS have so much power?
ElatedVenusaur
10/27/20 4:20:26 PM
#15
More or less the same reason the president does: Congress has grown increasingly impotent, and the Democrats in particularly are deeply reluctant to rock the boat in any way.

The Court as the Founders envisioned wasn't this powerful: it just seized on a fairly prosaic matter of whether William Marbury's appointment to a circuit court was valid even though the Secretary of State had failed to have the commission physically delivered to him(he was suing Secretary of State James Madison, on the grounds it was his constitutional duty to execute the commission of the previous president) to give itself the power to strike down laws it deemed unconstitutional.
Of course, that sort of thing just organically happens in any system. Ours; however, seems overwhelmed by inertia. It is increasingly difficult to imagine anything happening within the bounds of the Constitution(and current political norms) that would resolve the growing crisis of legitimacy this creates.

The Shah was a horrible oppressive monster(installed with our help because Mossadegh nationalized the oil industry).
The Shah managed to unite the opposition against him, and the clerics had a ton of pull in rural areas and a charismatic leader.
Even so, it's important to note that the revolution was not entirely unsuccessful for other groups: Iran is, after all, semi-democratic, even if the clerics can (and occasionally do) overrule the civilian authorities and you have the occasional stolen election and brutal suppression of popular protests(*laughs nervously in American*). So not the best, but it could definitely be a lot worse. Like, it's possible the system could become more democratic in a gradual, organic way.
