If you were trying to quote me, I called it pandering because it was a calculated decision made by a corporate entity that had come to the conclusion that showing this kind of representation was advantageous to the brand.

And it's probably a good thing? At least lgbtq folk are visible enough to be pandered to, and by extension hopefully valuable enough to the brand to be protected.

When I was a kid I couldn't beat the 8th dark world dungeon. Years went by and I would still just dick around in the world, unable to beat it.

The music and art direction are staggeringly good.

The story is convulted at best and happily jumps up it's own ass. This was a common trait of rpgs at the time, though.

It's a flawed classic. That said if it ever got a remaster or a (keep dreaming) full-blown remake I would be right there to buy it.

IMO stay away from FFXIV. It is full of the biggest bunch of elitist pricks that have ever played a MMORPG. They expect you to be a pro at the game, to know all the ins and outs and shit. It's HORRIBLE for newcomers unless you already have friends willing to help you.

While World of Warcraft suffered from a similar problem before, the new changes to progression make it so that you don't need guilds and groups as much as in other MMORPGs.

That was actually one of the things I most enjoyed about FFXI and FFXIV. Sure they might be elitist assholes, but at least you could count on them to show up on time, sober enough to play, equipped, and stocked. My experience playing WoW was to expect maybe one of those things on raid day.
