IMO stay away from FFXIV. It is full of the biggest bunch of elitist pricks that have ever played a MMORPG. They expect you to be a pro at the game, to know all the ins and outs and shit. It's HORRIBLE for newcomers unless you already have friends willing to help you.

While World of Warcraft suffered from a similar problem before, the new changes to progression make it so that you don't need guilds and groups as much as in other MMORPGs.

Ive had an okay time playing a little bit of PSO2

I think the biggest problem with a lot of mmos is that theres either a lot of complexity and depth and its a big hurdle to learn what all of it means, or its very simple and gets old very quickly.

I found a guild fairly quick with my friends and they weren't elitist at all. Hell, when all my friends dropped off the game, I continued playing the game cuz the guild was dope. Even matchmaking I rarely ran into elitists.

That was actually one of the things I most enjoyed about FFXI and FFXIV. Sure they might be elitist assholes, but at least you could count on them to show up on time, sober enough to play, equipped, and stocked. My experience playing WoW was to expect maybe one of those things on raid day.

FF14 I've never really come across any elitist assholes and I played with basically just my wife and I just beat Shadowbringers regular content...

I think one person tried to comment that my wife (Black Mage) was not doing proper rotation, but then the dude later said he was drinking so...

Beta Outside (version -12000) was probably quite interesting.
v.1939 was pretty awful, from what I hear.

I should probably mention that WoW is free to play until level 20. If you just want to try one out.

FF14 has a significant free trial as well. It does have some limitations like not being able to make parties yourself, max cap on gil, and no access to the market board. However you can play right though the first expansion with all those classes available.

RE: FFXIV toxicity
Yeah, it can happen, but it's not that common outside of hardcore/end-game raiding/bosses. On the other hand even when you're trying to be helpful it can be a crapshoot; people can turn around and be toxic to you when you just offer a suggestion regarding their rotation or whatever. It tends to make most people be a bit more aggressive than they should be. I think.

im getting real tired of WoW. the new expansion isn't so great, and my current guild hopped off at the end of the last expansion and still haven't come back. im not really motivated to do anything because theres no good rewards. everything is time gated and i hate that shit. wanna finish the story? well wait 2 weeks. then wait more. want better gear? grind this specific mat, thats also, you guessed it, time gated.

want cool rewards from your covenent? grind this other resource that is, say it with me now, T I M E G A T E D.

Secret World Legends - Fantastic for the story and mission design. It's free to play and I encourage everyone to experience at least the story. You got nothing to lose and everything to gain.

And then Elder Scrolls Online and FFXIV are good "serious" MMOs

And Runescape is good if you like the idea of quests that play like classic 1990s point-and-click adventures with quirky/dorky humor and a really awesome range of skills to level, from more attention intensive ones to more AFK-able skills. I love it because there's always a way to make progress and lots of ways to play to cater to different moods.

I think it's the only game where you can transform into a giant bat, level up non-ruminant ungulate anatomy, and play Word Hunt to increase your vocabulary.

Came in to say City of Heroes.

You will feel like a superhero for sure.

The game has a very interesting history. I took off in like 2004. Then the company that ran it was bought out by Koreans who didn't like it so they shut it down. Even with the active player base. Funny thing though a dev released the source code and for like 10 years hidden private servers kept the game going. In 2019 they went public with the private servers.

My favorite is Homecoming. Google that and it will get you there.

Final Fantasy 14 is probably the best more traditional/WoW-like MMO right now.

I have a soft spot for SWTOR mainly for the story, which you can do entirely solo. Pretty much only their equivalent of dungeons and raids require groups, and the ones that are part of the main story offer solo versions. Also has a F2P option though I've subbed when I played so not sure on the limitations.

Elder Scrolls Online is pretty good too, and is basically just buy the game and play, there's a sub fee but the only real reasons to subscribe are to get the minor DLCs for free (you can buy them outright as well) and the crafting resource bag (which if you're gonna craft is huge, every crafting resource in the game goes into a separate inventory with IIRC no caps or at least not one you're likely to reach)

And Guild Wars 2 is a pure buy to play one, not even an option to subscribe. Has a real money shop (all of these MMOs do for that matter) but nothing pay to win really last I checked, mainly just unlimited durability gathering tools, more inventory space, and what not.
