With the title I expected it to drop a lot sooner actually lol. Down has more of a sludge/stoner metal sound which focuses more on a dense and slow-paced sound that's nonetheless dripping with heavy atmosphere, except vocals are typically aggressive for contrast. Down is actually a supergroup made up of a ton of members from the NOLA metal scene, Pantera, Corrosion of Conformity, Crowbar, Eyehategod.

The "shortness" of Nightmare Logic definitely owes itself to their hardcore punk roots, or like the intensity of something like Metallica's Kill Em All which also had some hardcore punk roots to it. Riley Gale (RIP) was just an amazing vocalist too, always right on that edge of intensity but also accessible hookiness that really makes the songs pop. Though there isn't really a ton of conventional hooks on the track Nightmare Logic, something like Executioner's Tax (Swing of the Axe) is a lot more evident of that, you should give it a shot!

I'm familiar with the track, appropriately it's from the similarly-styled homage Northbury Grove, which references PS1 horror games and yeah that 80s slasher era. In the track I definitely note shades of influence from Goblin's work on Argento films llke Suspiria, it's got that prog. element to it that's unmistakable especially with the sparkling synths and guitar work that creates this mood of unpredictability and maybe even a little intentional false hope/positivity before the murdering starts. I don't think it really stands out too much from what its taking from but still a nice little track!

Cool, jazzy feeling, it almost sounds like a vocal cut from a TSO album. The bum-bums definitely give it a Christmas feeling, it just sounds like something you would hear late night as the fire dies. It's cool that this comes from one of the true genuinely Christmas focused games, it's a great game and music like this enhances the mood ten-fold.

Krampus movie

Just rewatched this last night. I actually enjoyed it less than when I first watched it back in 2015 but it's still a fun little film. It's like the spiritual successor Christmas Vacation deserved, though perhaps with a slightly less scary monster than its "real" sequel. Somehow, every character in this manages to be even more of a massive dick than in Lampoon's, and part of the thrill of Krampus is just seeing these ill-fitting family members try to get along, yes, in ways you've seen before, but also with this threat of horror bringing them closer together and revealing their true personalities. It cannot be understand how terrific Krampus' sound and creature design is either. While I don't think this film quite does for Christmas what Dougherty's previous holiday effort Trick 'r Treat did for Halloween, it's still a great alt. Christmas film the whole family can enjoy. Tangentially, the rise of Krampus in American culture is definitely some weird overnight phenomena I would've never saw coming. I think I first saw him in the League episode "A Krampus Carol" and I don't think I even realized he was actually a real folkloric figure at the time. Did The League partly inspire Dougherty's Krampus? I friggin' hope so.

Rankin-Bass Holiday Specials in general

These are some of the coziest Christmas specials in the game. Their stop-motion efforts are beautiful and while their animated efforts are are a bit more shoddy, they're still highly enjoyable to watch. There's always something to gain from watching these every year, no matter your age level. As an adult, I now feel like they were destined to be these hilariously over-analyzed specials with an impressive loose sense of continuity that is great fun to poke holes in with family and friends. But of course, cynic or not, these are bound to get your attention in some way either for their unique and colorful cast of characters or genuinely heart-warming storylines that are practically the heart of Christmas for me at this point.

Ecco the Dolphin - Ice Zone

The atmosphere is chilly and hollow, with a droning sense of freezing ambience that is cut through with an alien-like wall of noise, as chimes represent both the beauty of the ice but also Ecco trying to find his way through the labyrinthine and uninviting zone. I can even hear some slight static and crackling, as if the ice is subtly cracking and shifting its weight as it makes room for this unexpected visitor. There's a distinct lack of percussion here that's purposeful to diffuse tension and just make the track and experience of the level a more serene and surreal experience, immersing you in a hypnotic trance. It's a track that simultaneously makes me feel at ease but also as an unwelcome intruder, as if nature is using a siren's call to lure me to my doom, its beauty enticing but the realities ultimately bleak in the end, perfectly tying into Ecco's pro-nature messages and themes.
