I feel like my comment in post 97 was ignored. Fundamentally, the only way to make an electronic vote verifiable and trustworthy is if you enable the user to somehow confirm it - which removes the anonymity. IMO this isn't worth it for a high stakes election.

If you want better turnout, I'd sooner recommend doing what a lot of other countries do and extending the timeline for physical in-person voting. Like making it a full week, or having early voting booths out in specific places only for a longer period of time (a few weeks maybe)

The technology is there to do it securely and accurately. The problem is keeping it anonymous (which is important to prevent coercion and bribery) without compromising either of those things. In a lower-stakes election where you're willing to accept the loss of anonymity you can do it online.

In NZ there was a "wage subsidy" scheme, where any employer could get like $600 per week per employee for 3 months as long as they commit to pay 80% of usual pay to their staff. This was for any business that experienced (or expected) a revenue downturn, and was announced on the same day as the lockdown. They started paying it out within a few days of the announcement.

Yes, even a short-duration vaccine could be used to complete an elimination strategy, or eventually eradication.

I'm not sure why this is headline news, this has been a widespread concern in the medical community for many months.

Was that more of the virus itself being resistant? Or that drug companies didn't want to sink millions into R&D for a vaccine to a virus that was treatable with existing drugs and that burned out quickly like SARS and MERS did?
It's not about being "resistant", it just might not be a strong enough antigen to induce a long-lasting immune response. The huge piles of money available for covid might help more people push development. Also, I dont know of any coronaviruses (SARS and MERS included) that are treatable with existing drugs.

Negative pressure isolation room with anteroom for getting PPE on/off. Rubber boots that are only for in the covid area, N95 mask, hair covering (disposable surgical cap), eye protection (either goggles or a face shield, personal preference), one of those yellow impermeable gowns, with gloves taped underneath the cuffs and a second set of gloves over the top so we can change them inside if needed.

Someone's main job is to watch everyone put on and take off the gear in proper order and with correct hand hygiene in between steps where appropriate. and the boots get removed and left in a disinfectant tub on the way out of the area.

They still look very much like they're in growth, although it has been linear-looking growth for some time now. Basically 300-700 new cases most days for the last month
https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/sweden/

It's a fair approach to take if your main objective is just to prevent overwhelming the hospitals. They will probably need to have several cycles of increasing and loosening restrictions though. No way are they anywhere near meaningful herd innumity with those case numbers.

It sounds like they don't have evidence it can be transmitted through contact with semen, which kind of seems odd. Why do this test and not see if it can be spread through contact with the semen? They had sick people wack off into a cup just to see if there was any traces of it in the semen.
Consider how different that study is from this one, the ethnics involved etc. Realistically to test this you would need to infect a tissue sample or animal model in a lab.

To demonstrate sexual transmission specifically in humans is gonna be difficult due to the amount of close contact involved in sex. Probably need to be an observational study. Or a weird gloryhole-esque setup, but that's probably not going to get ethical approval given there's risk of harm to participants.

Study seems fine, honestly. They're not trying to prove that it is sexually transmitted. This is just the first step along that path (showing that in some infected men it is detectable in sexual fluids)

Make an account on GOG and download Galaxy to merge libraries across multiple storefronts

A misguided sense of economic preservation. The most successful outcomes will be in countries that went early enough to aim for an elimination strategy (Vietnam, Taiwan, HK, Korea, Singapore, Australia, NZ, Iceland) because it enables the measures to be in place for a shorter period of time, and hopefully avoid repeated lockdowns.
It does depend on good border control over many months, but most international travel is off-limits right now regardless, so I don't think there's a lot of downside there.

I don't have a desk at home, but I made a small form factor PC that I could fit into my TV entertainment unit (Ncase M1) back at the end of 2015. I've gotten pretty good use from it, especially since controllers are so easily compatible with most PC games in the last 10 years. Check out worldometers and the asian countries where mask use is widespread and compare the stats towestern countries that spread propaganda that masks are bad.

There's a huge difference between "masks are bad" and "We aren't making a recommendation for mass-masking of the general public"
It's well down the list of priorities in a situation like this. Contact tracing and isolation is probably the single most imporant, along with mass gatherings, especially indoors (and border controls for areas which don't already have widespread local transmission). Hand hygiene and physical distancing, and then masking probably just below that.
Most of Asia has managed well, but the strongest association is with acting early - Taiwan, Vietnam and Hong Kong who all put good border measures in as early as January. A lot of these were pretty draconian though (e.g. compulsory access of your phone's location data under penalty of fines). You see good efficacy in Australia and New Zealand who have achieved good control of the virus by enforcing physical distancing measures early in the ourbreak, but without the use of mass-masking.

Fuck outta here with that clown logic

With this logic then we should be discouraging people from washing their hands because they dont do it properly anyways.
Washing your hands poorly can't result in a situation where you're actually at higher risk than not washing. Using a mask incorrectly can.

Key things with a mask:
  • Wash hands before putting it on, and before + after taking it off
  • Cover both nose and mouth with good fit
  • Don't touch any part of the mask while it is on your face.
  • Moisture barrier: shouldn't be used longer than needed. Ideally under 15 mins, but up to 4 hours in some circumstances, sepending on the intention
The main risk IMO is people ignoring hand contact with the mask. Any droplets that transfer to your hand can be easily moved onto surfaces in the environment. Sometimes you also see people using it to cover the mouth but not the nose for some reason, too.
