Makes sense. There's a reason there's been no strong vaccine made for any coronavirus.

And the fastest developed vaccine developed for anything took 4 years.

Was that more of the virus itself being resistant? Or that drug companies didn't want to sink millions into R&D for a vaccine to a virus that was treatable with existing drugs and that burned out quickly like SARS and MERS did?

This was expected. Vaccine or not, there is a reason why the new normal is a phrase. We need to adapt society to live with this virus

This, kind of.
I'm not sure why this is headline news, this has been a widespread concern in the medical community for many months.

It's not about being "resistant", it just might not be a strong enough antigen to induce a long-lasting immune response. The huge piles of money available for covid might help more people push development. Also, I dont know of any coronaviruses (SARS and MERS included) that are treatable with existing drugs.

It doesn't seem like this is gonna be a problem with a covid vaccine. It's a pretty stable virus and hasn't had much meaningful mutation since discovery despite infecting over 7 million people

I certainly wasn't expecting something like "lifetime" immunity to this novel coronavirus by vaccination. I would expect the virus to evolve or adapt over time or the lack of a sufficient immune response it. Maybe something like the yearly influenza vaccine is what I'm expecting.

From the article, Fauci says he is cautiously optimistic about a vaccine working, even if it would have to be updated in the future

There have been attempts to deal with coronaviruses in animals in the past. My girlfriend's mother actually did her PhD on a certain strain of coronavirus in the 90's lol. There have been researchers looking into coronaviruses for decades.

I can see if I can get more information form her and get back to you later.

We stopped worried about SARS and MERS because they stopped spreading, not because we cured them. So if we can mobilize a mass immunization then will it have that same impact? Like if the vaccine only works for a year then thatll still be an absolutely amazing feat in limiting the spread right? Please?!
Yes, even a short-duration vaccine could be used to complete an elimination strategy, or eventually eradication.
