I read a really good article recently about how textbooks are an outdated practice (although I think it was about science/medicine in particular) because, by the time everything gets proofread, approved, and published, there is likely a new idea or concept and a lot of the published information becomes obsolete. I understand that this maybe doesnt apply to every grade level, but it made me think differently about the role of textbooks in the classroom.

In regards to medicine, textbooks arent completely outdated and certain aspects of medicine dont particularly change much at all. We dont rely completely on texts, we use research journals, colleges/organizations who composite data for us so we can come to a consensus, and studies themselves. But the text for most well established things or surgical steps are definitely a gold standard.

I thought he admitted to lying about masks because of the supply shortage. I mean, I don't blame him. But this would probably be seen as a bigger deal if Trump didn't lie so much.

I'd have to defer to someone more knowledgeable if his claim for changing his stance was solely to conserve PPE for healthcare workers. I work in healthcare, and I also browse the medicine subreddit when I get downtime. I remember back in January and February when the pandemic was a growing concern in that community, before the general public was made painfully aware of it, that there was no data on whether or not masks were effective at preventing transmission or exposure. Not insufficient data, just flat-out none. I remember Fauci not recommending masks, not because masks did nothing, but because we didn't know if they were effective.

But Fauci never "flip flopped all over the place." He changed his stance once in accordance with new data that came out.

The blood is on the hands of China and WHO. And if you want to blame anyone; people like Andrew Cuomo who set up EVERY nursing home to fail by making them all stay there and spread the virus to the people they lived with. Trump doesn't control every micro decision in each state, bud. If you want to blame Trump; fine...but lets involve the 50 governors, too.

Does Trump have no culpability? Certainly he has some. I mean, he represents the United States. Even if he doesn't personally make the bad decision, he's ultimately responsible as the President right?

What is wrong with what he said? Fauci did say "don't wear a mask" then later on changed his mind.

Facts.

How is that a bad thing? He adapted his approach when new data came out. This is a rapidly evolving brand new virus that caused a pandemic. Treatments and recommendations are and will continue to change constantly. No one should be reprimanded for following the most current evidence at the time.

Again it's a little weird to have this conversation without him but essentially it was something like this:

Of course the actual Holodomor happened, what is contested is whether it should be classified as genocide, since for example kulaks would burn their own land rather than hand over crops, and a bunch of other circumstances.
Bottom line however is that Stalin was complicit and responsible, no matter if it's technically genocide or not.

A personal reflection is that it's a very similar situation to the Bengal famine of '43 and yet people are not so happy to condemn Churchill. I'm less interested in whether they're classified as genocides and more interested in consistency.

May I ask why, exactly? Whether or not you consider the Holodomor a genocide doesn't excuse Stalin's actions and serves to show a very concerning set of biases you espouse.

I want it stopped. Not reduced. I guarantee in a few weeks, you're going to have people who took all precautions still getting sick. The mask is no end all be all.

We need to just lock every non essential inside.

I completely agree with you, but the unfortunate reality is that we as a community (on local and federal gov. levels) have to be realistic about this and factor in implausibility of a complete lockdown in real-world practice.

Protestors were mostly using masks, and distancing where they could. Any spikes from protests came from police and right wing extremists, both of which refused masks.

Did you read the discussion/conclusions sections of the posted studies? There are too many variables to control for to definitively state whether there was an impact, and if there was how much of an impact.

Yes, given how extraordinarily competitive entry into medical school is. 10-20 years ago all you needed was a good GPA and a biology degree. Nowadays, you need a stellar GPA if you're premed (requirement is lower for "harder" degrees like engineering or biochem but is still >3.5), a stellar MCAT score, and volunteer hours out the wazoo just to make it past the screening bots.

Ah, same as Canada then.

Iirc though you still need a BSc here with some exceptions

The list of pre-reqs required for acceptance into medical school will generally require a full bachelors degree of credit hours. The pre-med track is usually a Bachelors of Science in Biology. I went into medical school with a Bachelors of Science in Engineering and a few extra biology classes. I'm fairly certain that no medical school would look twice at an applicant without a bachelors degree, hundreds of volunteer hours, and great letters or recommendation. Even for "non-trads" who apply with a non pre-med major.
