Well, that worked out just fine before, but now I need to integrate (x^2*e^(-amx^2/h) dx), and I'm fairly certain I need to integrate by parts, which requires the e function to be dv, which requires me to know what v is, which would be the indefinite integral, which I specifically had to skirt around before.

You can transform this into something involving a constant times the integral of x^2 e^(-x^2), which you can do via the u-substitution of u = x^2. Then you get an integral in the end that is something like the gamma function.

Granted, that makes an assumption on the bounds of the integral. I can make a quick write-up rather than this half-assed explanation, but to make it easier I'd like to know the bounds on the integral first.

That negative in the exponent and the bounds of the integral change things a lot. The integral of e^(-x^2) over (-,) is known as the Gaussian integral, and there's a ton of clever ways out there to solve it. I think you're just a single u-sub from that integral.

Dr. Peyam on YouTube has like a dozen videos on solving it, take your pick of them. If you'd rather I can walk you through one later but I'd have to get on my laptop.

IIRC the standard Gaussian integral is for what it's worth.

It's not expressible in terms of elementary functions, so it depends on what you're going for here. You can express it in terms of nonelementary functions a la that erf function Wolfram gives you, or fuck around with series representations though.

Whats a PDE anyone?

A partial differential equation. Intuitively, say you have a function of multiple variables (like 3 variables for all the spatial dimensions and one for time). Then a PDE relates that function and/or its rates of change with respect to various variables (called partial derivatives), and your hope is to recover the original function.

If you've ever studied ordinary differential equations, think that but now your functions have multiple variables.

I think it's likely that this isn't really the case for pretty much any academic subject. I think students undervalue how helpful it is to have an expert in the field filter information through their lens.

So damn true. I've been doing some personal studying lately - I'm in a gap year between undergrad and graduate school in order to avoid burnout and for other reasons, but I'm still studying math (my major) out of personal curiosity and to keep my mind sharp. It's a fair bit more difficult to teach oneself in my experience - certainly not insurmountable though.

Not really. But moderation in general online doesn't discourage it much since, unless you tie accounts to phones or special emails, it's easy to pick up a new account and go. Not like any noteworthy boards aside maybe 261 take more than a few days to get into.

Really, all the moderation system seems to do here is encourage people to bitch about being rightfully modded.
