Mm. It's trying to channel a similar sort of feel but I don't think the writing chops are on the same level, sadly. The core setup of a council of immortals and the state they've created is good, they just don't do much interesting with it and there aren't really many interesting characters. In general I feel like the writing was a bit afraid to take risks; the main character is competent but the conflicts she faces are... safe, despite the fact that the game flirted with being about how a person who is both good and lawful reconciles those facets in a corrupt society.

So it's not terrible in this regard, but it is rather bland, and that is indeed one of the reasons I'm saying FFT is still better.

I did until that semifinal, when L-Block clearly showed that it was up to the test. I was surprised that nobody was taking L after that.

the crew was super resistant to the idea of L doing well. the Link match seems baffling in retrospect.

Smash's biggest strength is that it's forever current.

Smash is such a weird thing. we're a hype site first and foremost, and we watch more than we play. Smash fits us well because you can enjoy Smash as a game without ever touching it, just following along with the reveals or whatever. I would think that makes Smash more potent, not less.

if a picture of a smash character is enough to derail its chances (from a popular game, no less) then it's a pretty wishy washy game in the first place.

it's pretty good! I mean, that's from lowered expectations of all games being weak and vote totals being even weaker, but for a 2020 contest it's pretty enjoyable. pretty good bracket placement overall, maybe it would have been improved by a couple of tweaks but no big deal.

I'm real excited for smash/odyssey and the fight for who gets to lose to witcher 3 should be fun.
