great flavor. i started watching the show on netflix few months ago and it really grew on me. it is so, so, so dumb but somehow becomes more than the sum of its parts. the right level of dumb to laugh at with someone or have open in a second monitor

The opposing attitudes on 'reopening' remind me of an episode in one of the bad seasons of... (had to google)... house of cards

There's that one episode where Rapey Spacey is deciding whether to divert funds from his employment project back to the emergency fund (he had declared unemployment a federal emergency).

There was a hurricane with a 50% chance of blowing up south carolina in two days, and without sufficient funding it would cause a bunch of deaths. In the end (sorry, house of cards spoilers i guess) Spacey permanently gives up the funds to disaster relief at the last possible second, but the hurricane goes back to sea harmlessly

Did he make the right choice, even though the hurricane passed by harmlessly?

Would staying closed be the right choice, even though the disease might magically go away on its own? Would opening be the right choice, even if we lucked out?

I think the idea is that the intelligent choice doesn't depend on where the coin flip lands- it has to take into account both scenarios

this is actually how i've seen it being proposed. the list of contacts is kept in the person's phone and never shared

the scary/central part is actually sharing your number after you know you're infected- because that part does actually need to go somewhere that everyone you've met can find it

i personally don't like the idea of having a broadcasted 'track my location' app on my phone, but that's how it would work

when i was a kid i really didn't like trying to figure out the collision, i.e., how far 'up' did you have to be to hit someone, or how far 'up' did you have to scroll to be safe from an attack

there are different types of unlikable protagonists

there are ones you're not supposed to like, or aren't supposed to be heroic or good people (Brood War Kerrigan, i guess Joel, and people take issue with Marche's choices). well-written, but not likable

then there are ones that aren't likable because they have zero charisma and are just empty space where a personality is supposed to be. Gordon Freeman is a good example

Of course the concepts of hereditary genetics are real, but the specific concept of race as we use it is an arbitrary heuristic that takes extra care to prioritize visual attributes like skin color.

If an aliens plucked people up and used statistical analysis to define human races (if they'd even bother), they might come up with completely different categories than we would expect. the ones that 23 and me use are intentionally crafted around their initial customers' self-reported races/areas of family origin, and even those don't put anybody at 100% anything

In a separate scenario, if aliens picked up a thousand random people from earth, put 500 of them in one giant space ship and the other 500 in another giant space ship, after a certain number of generations they could be considered 2 "races" just through random genetic drift

I don't understand how people can say the game is bad when no one's played it yet. It wasn't like the leaked cutscenes were bad. I think the plot summaries are skipping the journey to get to the destination and have no context.

i'm not sure if i would buy a remastered trilogy, but i would certainly consider if it came with all of the DLC i never purchased.

i've tried to replay the games a couple times, and when you already know all of the spoilers there's less motivating you to slog through the mediocre controls

i have a soft spot for dark souls 2, because i think it's the one with the best pvp. i spent hours at the dragon bridge dueling with other dragonbros, and the rat & tower covenants were entertaining if nothing else.

however, it is the one with the most "nothing" bosses- guys with swords that you sidestep and attack from behind

it also let down the fanbase by throwing in tons of allusions to DS1 without being connected in any way. the way that dark souls lore works, fans couldn't actually figure that out until they had scoured through the entire game. they should've just done a better job at the beginning of establishing expectations and a sense of place. to be honest, i think this is a weakness of the series as a whole.

perfect example is that one boss that is almost a carbon copy of ornstein for no particular reason other than to get your hopes up.

once you get past that shock, the self-contained lore is totally fine

it's hard to say which is my favorite. i think i played too many all in a row at once and they all kind of blend together. I played dark souls 2, bloodborne, and dark souls 3 on release because I wanted to play with my friends, and one per year was just too much- I overdosed.

i was sort of into sekiro, with it's vastly improved gameplay, but once i realized the plot was the exact same thing as every single other soulsborne game- running around and fighting to end immortality- I almost immediately stopped being interested in the game.
