Episode 102 was great. Can't really put into words why, but it really rejuvenated my interested in what is going on (not that I wasn't interested anyway). Maybe because we finally got to see more of Meruem. And the young girl in the ED showed up, some kind of champion player of this Gungi game.

I just finished Episode 99. Gon and Killua infiltrated the dictator's county, and Killua is going around trying to spread the word that towns of people are getting killed. Which causes the Chimera Ants to use Diego to declare Martial Law, which allegedly will make thing tougher for everyone.

What I mean is that, I've heard people say things like Chimera Ant is the best story arc in all of shonen. And while I have really enjoyed it (AND have really enjoyed HxH, definitely one of my favorite anime I've watched recently), I would not personally put it on that high of pedestal just yet. Which might be unfair to say, since I need to see the whole thing to really judge it. I was just trying to express my excitement that there's more remaining than I thought.

Ah, OK! Well I'm glad to here there is more to arc left. While I am enjoying it quite a bit, so far it lacks that extra oomph I was looking for. For being such a highly respected shonen arc, I've been waiting for when it really kicks things into high gear. But I'm trying to keep my expectations and check and watch this like I haven't heard anything about it before.

And I thought this arc was sorta kind starting to wrap up, but now I feel like it might be halfway? There's like this kid in the ED and he's in it a lot so he must be super important but he hasn't even appeared in the show itself yet so that's a sign there's a bunch more left.

Oh hey a new ending! And this one is pretty good.

I'm a bit lost with this Gorteau (sp? knowing this anime its probably spelled Gourteaux or something) politics stuff. I guess it IS interesting seeing the Chimera Ants puppeting the dictator guy and making their culling of humans appear like business as usual.. but I kinda feel like I missed a conversation or two.

Killua's character has been in a weird place for a while. What's his motivation? What does he want or desire? Besides the general shonen character thing of "get stronger", his goals in life are to 1. Help Gon find Ging and 2. Generally just be Gon's friend and help him with whatever. Killua has almost nothing outside Gon at this point, besides a vague animosity towards Illumi. And I get why having a friend is so important to him, and I understand WHY he would be so devoted to it. It's just, I'm hoping Killua gets more because I kinda like him yknow?

So now everything has been set. They've made it very clear that Gon is conserving his true power for someone he hates. We know he hates whoever has Kite under their control, who we know is Pitou who is also whom Killua and Gon are set to fight from their plan (unless I missed it, I don't think they know Pitou is the puppetmaster Nen user). How I see it shaking out is that during the fight, it will be revealed that they are ones who turned Kite into what he is now. This'll Gon to go all out/go berserk, which means he will FINALLY transform!! And then, everything after that will be completely unknown. Gon could die ten seconds after that for all I know, I wouldn't even put it past this story to do that either.

It's funny, while I don't THINK this is filler, if you told me this stuff with the Troupies WAS filler I'd believe you. Which isn't to say its bad, it just has that smell to it if you get my meaning.

I'm not sure if it was cheap or not that the way Killua had to overcome his character flaw of over-analyzing and running away was not through self-reflection and overcoming it, but figuring out Illumi put a weird magic spike in his brain that made him do that the entire time.

Man, I hate Illumi. HE should be the guy who is called out as being awful by everyone at the end of the show. That, or Killua gets a chance to completely beast on him after all this training (though my suspicion is that Illumi is really really strong himself).

All fair points. I mentioned this before, but HXH is pretty unique in that Gon has had very few real fights against equal opponents (thought I think Genthru is closer to Gon's power than what you speculate there), and honestly just few real fights in general. These last encounters with the Chimera Ants have been kinda the few times Gon has really been able to show off.

Why is random Knuckles guy so strong?? Apparently he could have destroyed Greed Island with one hand tied behind his back or whatever, but he's some other guy's weird apprentice. I know I know, it's a shonen thing and obviously adversaries from the new arc are just stronger than than the last because they have to be. But still!!

The one good thing about these guys like the other hunters, these apprentices, Biscuit, etc. constantly underestimating Killua and Gon and declaring them bad is when they (especially Gon) completely obliterate their expectations and show just how amazing they are. Again, a common shonen trope but it feels especially good here. Probably because I just flat-out really like Gon. I feel like usually I don't gravitate to towards the main character in anime like these, but this has proven to be the exception. Killua is OK too, but I feel like his character has become a bit stagnant.

So there's a part in the OP where Kite's face appears, and then sorta transforms into someone else. That's one of the things that's giving me the feeling something is going to happen to him.

And that's an interested tidbit about the manga! I wonder why the anime decided to present it like this.
