It was easy to game though. In Mineral Town, your rivals only made "progress" when you friended them more. And once the chick had a red heart, your rival couldn't touch her unless you married her or someone else. I think it was the same way in 64 >_>
Yeah, duh, it is a game for kids. You don't want to add a deeply competitive aspect to a farming simulator (which is why I personally don't like Rune Factory much despite preferring the less-chibi art style and the gorgeous scenery --- I'm not playing with a dirt farm in order to slay monsters and save elves).

Since you make friends with villagers during festivals, it's easy to see a blue or green heart event for the rivals and it still makes it a richer game.

Leanaunfurled posted...
It still added a nice touch to making the other villagers feel alive, like they had their own lives going on. Still nothing beats A Wonderful Life in the dating/family aspect imo

Right, this. I loved the progression and actual end that AWL provided, even though I thought the dearth of festivals and limited bachelors and (bachelorettes in AnotherWL) was a downer. I wish Stardew Valley would implement a skip-some-years quest to unlock. This isn't the direction they ended up going, but I had hoped ConcernedApe would offer a quest to turn abandoned Joja into a small block of houses so that some bachelor/ettes could get their own place or marry and start households.

Tactical_Spork posted...
yall is not being appropriated lol it is just much less tedious and awkward than you all and solves the issue of the gendering of you guys
Not gonna start a whole thing, but "y'all" predominates in the South, which many tumblars will gleefully condemn writ large as despicable, but they gobble up "y'all" and "fol[ks]." It is textbook-definition 'appropriation' in the 'bad way,' but even if you support its spread, it is also literally what it is in the neutral way: "the adoption of elements of one culture by members of another culture." That's not even a moral judgment on my part; I prefer fewer pronouns overall, but that's as far as I care about its adoption. I also see "yous(e)" floated sometimes, which I just can't with, personally, but that's a matter of regional rivalry, not linguistics.

For the record, I'm from the South in a part that is, uh, you know, 'proud' of being South, but I lived near D.C., London and Seattle throughout my twenties and now I'm back in the same town I grew up in; I'm 31. The number of people who use "y'all" here" is probably around 25%-40%, with an uptick since I graduated high school.

"You" is already a singular and plural pronoun. "You all" is an optional distinction if you need, but is infrequently necessary. I assure you, I don't need to be told about the problems with the male default. All the second wavers covered that long ago.

As a trivium, some languages have exclusive 'we' and I find that pretty keen, but I'm not looking to bring it into English. My understanding is that Arabic also conjugates by addressee sex. Pronouns and linguistic genderfangles are a pretty cool subarea of study.

Edited lots to include the cultural appropriate drafts because I'm a pedant just like those linguisticians of the 1600 to 1800s. Will stop the derail now.

TopicDo you believe in the "they" gender pronoun
VanananaHeyHey
05/05/20 8:19:36 PM
#65
As the official linguist and likely only radical feminist, here's the skinny:

-'They' has been used as a singular pronoun in English for hundreds of years. Its use was common until Latin-loving pedants in the 1600 to 1800s concocted 'grammar rules' that did not conform to actual English grammar, such as not ending sentences with prepositions (possible in many Germanic languages; not possible in Latin) and using 'he' as the neutral word for hypothetical people. At the time those men were being their most pedantic, they were also among the literate minority, so they got to write as many books as they wanted about how right their attempt to turn English into a conlang was. Those rules were then taught top-down as more robust public schooling took hold, but we still see that people trend towards the variants that are natural to their language, from prepositions to pronouns.

-In modern times 'they' is commonly used even by speakers who oppose gender diverse pronouns in relaying anecdotes. This is used in two ways. One is in reference to a stand in for 'society' or 'experts': e.g. "They say you should drink water and eat vegetables every day." Another is in passing, inconsequential reference to a specific, but unremarkable, person already known in the context of a conversation, often whether explicit gender markers are used elsewhere or not: "I went up to the clerk and I said I needed a refund, but they said no, so I was like, listen, buddy, go get your manager."

-It is both singular and plural, just like 'you.' How is that so difficult for so many naysayers to realize, or indeed, to feel silly before saying it? You would say "they are" just like you say "you are."

-It's ironic to me that so many of the same people (on tumblr and Facebook; not sure about anyone here) who advocate for singular 'they' are also the people most likely to post things about how necessary and romantic t/usted, tu/vous distinctions are, to valorize 'vosotros,' and to appropriate 'y'all' into their suburban idiolect.

-Ultimately, I think everyone should be 'they' in the third person. There should not be sex- or gender-based pronouns. Many languages don't have them. The only reason they exist in the first place is because societies thought it was important to distinguish between male people as Men and female people as Women for the same reason they distinguished between dog/bitch, bull/cow, rooster/hen, etc.: managing breeding stock. There was never validation or affirmation anywhere in the equation. I, You(s), They(s), You(p), We, They(p) would be perfectly sufficient.

-'It' is used for objects that are not humans, including (but not always) animals. The plural is, uncontroversially, 'they.' Thus, in strict technical terms, the broad adoption of the pronoun 'they' wouldn't solve the insult of calling a person 'it.'

-No one should call people 'it.' That's a matter of common decency. Since 'they' exists commonly for speakers in other contexts, using 'they' shouldn't be too big a stretch.

-If someone elects to use a neopronoun for themselves, they should also be willing to accept the native pronoun 'they' amongst the public and from acquaintances. Pronouns are not an open class of words in English, unlike nouns, so they are not as easily incorporated into the language or readily parsed. This is why analogies by liberal feminists to "If you can use a Pokmon's evolution's name, you can use neopronouns!" fall flat.

-In fourth grade, I wrote "s/he" in a paper as a pronoun to mean "one," basically and the teacher crossed it out with "This breaks up the flow of reading. Write 'he or she'" and I will never, ever understand how that tedious clunker is supposed to be more pleasant. Edit: I don't actually like "one" that much, but it does have a useful purpose that "they" can't fill alone. "One" needs a bit more currency. Though I suppose I see "someone" pretty often, so I guess "one" just evolved. Nice.

TopicIn layman's term, what is considered the next tax bracket?
VanananaHeyHey

Your money is taxed in phases up to certain amounts. The next level up is the next tax bracket. Money made over that amount is taxed at the next amount.

I'm going to make up numbers and figures right here for demonstration purposes only.

Pretend you make $100,000 a year.

In a progressive bracket system, the first $25,000 you make will be taxed at, let's say (remember, I'm making these numbers of for simplicity; they can vary by country, state and occupation) 10%.

After the $25,000 threshhold, you'll pay taxes at a rate of 15% on income made up to $75,000. For earnings over $75,000, you'll pay taxes at a rate of 25%. But your whole income isn't being taxes at 25%, only the amount that is over $75,000.

You can envision it as a series of pockets: when the Up To $25,000 Pocket fills up at that rate, the remaining money is placed into the separate pocket at a different rate. Yet, like pockets, the contents of one doesn't affect the contents of the other.

You might have to just lower reps and work your way up to higher reps for the job. If that is 20 lbs per limb this will be very hard.

Yeah, that's looking like it. Oh, well. I don't mind it, was just hoping for hacks. Fortunately, it's not 20 per arm, just what the bar can be weighed with the weights I have.

scorpion41 posted...
Whats your routine? Like what are your sets/reps like?

I'm doing a 5-3-1- Wendler. I had had a trainer at the gym, so I'm not as religious as I had been, plus the extended time when I wasn't doing anything.

I'm still hitting my stride with the accommodations I have to make in my garage as opposed to the gym, so I haven't fully maxed anything but my bench yet. In December, my training maxes were:

Deadlift: 160 (it's 125 now)
Strict: 70 (55 now)
Squat: 135 (haven't attempted yet; been jogging the past month, which is new to me)
Bench: 90 (it was a struggle at 75 when I got back and now 75 is easy, but 95 is the next jump up and that's been kick. I'm not too worried about the bench, though, because it's easier to cross train and to hop onto for a ten reps in the middle of the day while something is in the microwave.

Anyway, what the gym had me doing was this for all of them. I'm using my strict press weight from back then to demonstrate.
Week 1: 5x low-ish weight (so for the strict press, call it 45 back then), then 5x 55, then 5+to failure of 60; then 10 reps three times of 35 lbs. Cross train with kettle balls, other lifts, light cardio, mobilization, etc. throughout the rest of the week.

Week 2: 3 x 50, 3 x 55, 3+ 65; then 10 x 35 x 3

Week 3: 1x55, 1x60, 1x65; 10x35x3

Week 4: 5x30, 5x35, 5x40, 10x35x3 (basically total rest this week every fourth month)

I usually do (edit: did) squat and strict on the same day and do dead and bench on two separate days. Jogging most days (walk/jog; my cardio is shit), plus walking around the property doing light to moderate-intensity work hauling things of all weights.

I would absolutely agree with this. Especially since the Tea Party ripped their funding in 2010, they've become absolute unquestioning toadies for Republicans. They have conservative guests on frequently to speak unchallenged. The people they bring on for 'balance' are also very improperly credentialed; they'll have a Republican congressman and a local volunteer activist as the 'Democrat,' so the activist sounds far less polished and articulate regardless of the merit of their cause. Or, once, they had Randy Rainbow interminably talking about his theatrics, then presented a Republican legislator actually talking about things of substance in the next segment. You'll actually get more satisfying discussion on Bloomberg radio.

The rest of the coverage is all "How can Hope help people feel Faith, whatever it means to them?" "What does Resilience mean to you?" "How can one little bird create so much Community?" "I explore the secrets of operasta, the new craze that combines opera with pasta." It was always artsy and local-crafts-favoring, but lo the past decade, it's just been Reader's Digestable pap. :(

That's the dream, but there aren't many things of an incremental size that would fit on the bar and just hurling a couch around, while very toning, doesn't really allow for the form.

My hope was that someone would have specific ideas of bar-compatible household objects or a weird isometric exercise I hadn't thought of.

In mid-March, right before isolation, I bought a convertible bench press from a family friend to maintain some of my gym routine. At that point, I hadn't been working out in a gym for two months (travel), so I have work to do to get to where I was anyway.

The weights it came with were the bar, two 5s, two 10s and six 25s, which means the progression is as follows:

45 55 65 75 95 105 115 125 145 155 165 175 195 205 215 225

Where I bolded are 20-pound jumps. My property requires a lot of labor, so I can find things to to cross train my deadlift and to complement the muscles in my bench to a good extent, but I don't know how to bridge the gap of that twenty pounds on my squat or strict press without really risking some hurt, or at least major diminishment of form.

I alternate between heavy and endurance, so I know that I would eventually be able to do it without additional weights, but I'm impatient and I'd rather have a smoother curve upward.

Any buff CEmen have tips? I know the obvious answer is to buy more incremental weights, and I will in time, but that's not the question at hand.

The masks people wear shouldn't be the same as the ones medical professionals wear. A few bandanas getting washed after each outing is definitely better than being totally exposed. Hoarding medical-grade masks because you want to emulate the scariest part of E.T. when you put away your groceries is bad.

TC, this is a novel virus. The WHO are giving updated information as they learn more. Their admonition against masks is because average people are being unreasonable hoarders and driving themselves into panics on purpose. The WHO has to say things like "it won't live on surfaces forever, you can open mail" and "please, please, please, please, please don't try UV enemas" and "don't eat certain animals" because it's their job, even if it's obvious.

Cool! Keep it up! I'm hoping to get a translator's certification in Spanish in the coming year or two, as well as wanting to take my Portuguese from intermediate to fluent.

I could always use a French buddy! It was one of my minors in college (the other was German).

The Post Office is the only agency explicitly named in the Constitution. It is unconstitutional to allow its demise.

(And I share a birthday with it.)

stop milking those poor fucking cows then
Cows produce milk because they've given birth, so if you stop milking them, they can get udder infections and will be in a lot of pain.

I guess the motivation is the same instinctive, old-world reasons people have for sticking their finger in their mouth when it bleeds. Perhaps there's something (or was once thought to be) in saliva that promotes clotting.

Routine infant circumcision should be illegal. There's no reason religious covenants can't be enacted upon legal age of majority by the devout.

Until Tinder and all its variants stop being a thing or contraception and abortions are outlawed, women will maintain their high standards to their detriment.

The pityfuck goes away the moment women can't rely on contraception and abortion anymore. Standards would skyrocket and you would have to be a really quality male in someway for the risk to be worth it.

If you guys thought the grammar police and turbonerds are bad today well they were literally 10x worse back then. I remember I met a dude on GameFAQs who hated acronyms and shortened words. I think I was in the RPG board and I used POW for Power, MAG for Magic and LVL for level and so forth. This turbonerd dude came in going crazy about how I'm a lazy person by not wanting to spell out the whole words and how I used sloppy typing instead. I told him to chill, that it was not a big deal and that even the games themselves used shortened words like that. The dude went on about how it's only two more letters to type to get the full words so why was I so dumb and low in IQ that I was not able to type it. It was fucking awful. I asked him what website was we on and he said GameFAQs and I said WRONG we are on Game FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS spell it all out you lazy bum. Check mated that nerd.
Then everyone fapped.

srsly tho, I remember those days. Good on you for sticking it to him.
