Good news (actually terrible news but go figure)

My parents are delayed until next week. They were coming to Doha on the way to a far east cruise but cruise was cancelled due to Coronavirus. So they're still coming and they're going to Jordan instead. Next week, though.

So that means the Rumble can happen THIS WEEKEND

FRIDAY NIGHT/SATURDAY MORNING

Using the word 'cringe' makes me cringe, so different strokes!

In all honesty, I tend to ignore anyone's opinion that is founded upon "I cringed." Maybe you don't mean it this way, but it tends to be a lazy umbrella word people use when they don't really want to provide substance to their thoughts.

I don't want to provide substance to my thoughts, you're right, because I've been on the internet long enough and know myself well enough to know that if I do, a) those "more substantial" thoughts will be argued with point-by-point by someone or other (you, apparently!) and b) I, being stubborn and argumentative, will engage in a very long discussion about a movie I really don't care enough about to justify such a lengthy debate.

With that said, I didn't actually use that word to "avoid" giving substance somehow, it is physically what happened. I really dislike the word "cringe" when it is somehow used as an adjective for a ton of reasons, the laziness of it being one of them. But I literally cringed at times during Shazam. Like, the verb. Not in the idiotic, overused way people describe something as somehow being cringe. I physically cringed several times. It was...uncomfortable? Embarrassing? Whatever word you want to use (and no, me not being able to pin down a word for this still does not justify the use of the word "cringe" in that way). It is a physical reaction that some people have to things, fairly often, and its stupid conversion into an adjective doesn't change that.

Very wide spectrum there when it comes to personal enjoyment, but mostly good.

I think there was some genuine thoughtfulness about how Bojack's descent into "horny unicorn" was handled too. Because, yeah, Bojack is absolutely a dirtbag and should have gone to jail and yeah, all the stuff he did is terrible. He deserved what he got.

But a guy's got to make a living, and an actor - especially one like Bojack who likes (hungers for, really) the applause and adulation - needs an audience. I think it spoke volumes when he teamed up with someone even scummier and found a new audience...college dudes who were totally on his side for the whole thing and see him as somebody fighting against "#metoo" (even though he's not, not deliberately anyway). So of course Bojack, who I don't think really wants to be associated with that kind of person, ends up being an icon for them because he was so shunned, so rejected by society that he did a deal with the devil (Vance Waggoner) and made a stupid movie that would probably piss off an awful lot of people just by existing.

I'm not saying that we should like, coddle somebody like Bojack after all the shit he did. And I don't think that's what the show was saying either - it was more of a cautionary tale, how a man can become something like that if you insist on dogpiling. You can do it if you want, and he probably deserves every last bit of it, but it does have consequences; the final few episodes seemed to be saying that if you viciously reject a guy en masse, he's still going to find an audience of people who defend him and there's a good chance he'll then abandon any attempt to even appear "good" and simply lean in to all the stuff you hate him for (because that's what his new fans love him for), rendering the whole exercise of hating him a bit counterproductive. It's like the show commits to "#metoo culture" but doesn't fully commit to "#cancel culture" - by acknowleding Bojack deserves what he gets but by showing the downsides of #cancelling somebody in that way.

I dunno. I thought that was a particularly interesting avenue to go down and one I didn't expect.

UPDATE

Hi guys.

So I have to move apartments this weekend. I'm making the announcement quite last minute here because I thought I might still be able to do this, but honestly given how busy I am going to be and how big a timesink the Rumble is I'm not going to be able to do it today.

All being well I should be able to start it tomorrow.

Next week I'm on vacation and the weekend after my parents are visiting, so if it doesn't happen tomorrow there'll likely be a 2/3 week delay on this for which I apologize profusely.

My take is irrespective of whether Riddle's coming off like a tryhard. Like I said earlier, I don't have much of an opinion on that.

But I think if I wanted a push I would rather be a Twitter tryhard than just do what, oh, Finn Balor's done and hope that if I work really hard and don't rock the boat Senpai Vince will arbitrarily decide one day that I've grabbed the brass ring and deserve it.

Sure, I get what he's trying to do and I respect the hustle in a way

It's just the posts he's made don't amuse me at all. They're not funny. They don't entertain me, or really interest me, I don't think they were...I dunno, witty in any way. I think if you do what Riddle did right - and "right" in this case is entirely subjective - then maybe Strife and I and others would think differently about it, and him.

And I don't think I disliked it purely because he's going against the grain or against Goldberg or against WWE or some shit like that.

I've found his posts irritating and tryhard, I must admit. I don't think that makes me a "cop", and if it works and he gets the match out of it then more power to him, the hustle worked.

Maybe prick is the wrong word, and kind of strong, but I think it's perfectly valid to look at Riddle's posts and be turned off to him. With that said, it was mostly the Goldberg stuff that I found annoying, the Lesnar stuff less so. But the Goldberg stuff was first, so that was my first impression.

People are not fucking bootlicking "cops" because they don't like the way Matt Riddle has gone about things on twitter, calm the fuck down
