Aquaman is just kinda dull. For how much spectacle there is...it's super by the numbers and predictable. Maybe some of the worst romantic chemistry in a superhero movie, too. I can't say it's actively bad, though. Best part of the movie was going in with my roomate and neither of us knowing William Dafoe was in it, and just Green Goblin joking it up whenever he was on screen.

Shazam is a fun time.

It's okay. Not remarkable but not super boring like BvS or excessively stupid like Suicide Squad.

Harley is pretty funny so if you like her she makes the movie worthwhile. The birds aren't super necessary but they get good character arcs and at least two of them are badass. Though them teaming up happens very late and in a forced way.

The villain sucks, though.

I think there's two more episodes left in the first season of Harley Quinn. I'm surprised at how good it is. It has a ton of heart and loads of humor in it. It totally has a Venture Bros vibe too.

I liked Shazam fine but, I dunno, it leaned a bit much on very syrupy sentimentality. Like way more than average.

Sentimentality is the very nature of the superhero through the lens of a child. The pure, almost chaste vision of heroism and the desire to use it to mend familial breaks... this is what Shazam has always been about. He believes that there is a Norman Rockwell world out there for him because it hasn't been beaten out of him by the departure of adolescence. Just my opinion of why it works so well. The perspective of a child is fresh in comparison to a general jaded cynicism of adulthood in other superhero movies.

Using the word 'cringe' makes me cringe, so different strokes!

In all honesty, I tend to ignore anyone's opinion that is founded upon "I cringed." Maybe you don't mean it this way, but it tends to be a lazy umbrella word people use when they don't really want to provide substance to their thoughts.

What matters most to me with superhero films is that they find an audience. Suicide Squad found no audience because it had nothing to say. It was six people walking down a street. Shazam had something to add to the superhero conversation. Most of the recent Marvel movies have as well. It's really just that murky middle period with Ultron that added nothing of value. Shazam is a success story and so is Endgame and so is Doctor Strange and so is Big Hero 6, etc. etc. Sure, not everything in a superhero film lands for me, but I can see why it lands for someone.

I think the MCU has also become very sentimental and Shazam pulls it off better by using it to tell a cohesive story so I dunno. Different strokes I guess. Like Scarlet says it felt more unique and genuine and less jaded or forced than when the MCU does it.

This MIGHT be because I'm team Fuck Tony Stark though

I don't want to provide substance to my thoughts, you're right, because I've been on the internet long enough and know myself well enough to know that if I do, a) those "more substantial" thoughts will be argued with point-by-point by someone or other (you, apparently!) and b) I, being stubborn and argumentative, will engage in a very long discussion about a movie I really don't care enough about to justify such a lengthy debate.

With that said, I didn't actually use that word to "avoid" giving substance somehow, it is physically what happened. I really dislike the word "cringe" when it is somehow used as an adjective for a ton of reasons, the laziness of it being one of them. But I literally cringed at times during Shazam. Like, the verb. Not in the idiotic, overused way people describe something as somehow being cringe. I physically cringed several times. It was...uncomfortable? Embarrassing? Whatever word you want to use (and no, me not being able to pin down a word for this still does not justify the use of the word "cringe" in that way). It is a physical reaction that some people have to things, fairly often, and its stupid conversion into an adjective doesn't change that.

Yeah, I honestly think that in a modern conversation, you have to clarify that. Otherwise you come off as Jake Pauling it a bit, you know? I don't know why words have to be dismantled and converted into the basest of uses that eliminate... I guess the nuance from them? But it sucks.

In conversation I hear it used both ways, so maybe I just have shitty anecdotal experiences. I do work at a comic shop, so I would believe it. The word itself has become this alarm bell to me in any conversation.

Batman V Superman one of the worst I've seen but they nailed the human moments oddly
Suicide Squad a disaster that stopped being good after the initial history parts of each character
Wonder Woman was fantastic
Justice League was better than BvS but still bad and lackluster

then I gave up on the universe

Roomate came back from the movie last night with the conspiracy theory opinion that Cassie is so far removed from the original that they casted the character as a no-name role first, and then afterwards a suit asked "who is the most popular young Asian female in DC we can attach to this character for recognition".

I thought it was a step too far, but after this name change I am suddenly buying into his guess. In fact, I will take it a step further and say they didn't ask anybody, and told them to do it after googling Asian DC character because Cassandra is the first result.

Cassandra's name was attached from very early on so I don't think this is it.

More likely conspiracy theory: a more normal version of Cass was in originally, someone decided that they probably shouldn't use "mute Asian martial arts waifu" in a movie, and they rewrote her part. But by that point they had already committed!
