| Topic | Is capitalism and democracy holding the US back? |
| MrMallard 04/08/20 1:19:06 PM #8 | Capitalism, yes - only because of the extreme heights that capitalism has achieved. It should not be considered ethical or legal to take a drug that costs $5 to produce per dose, and raise the price of that dose to $1000. People's lives are at stake when it comes to medicine, but America prefers to give pharmaceutical millionaires the freedom to gouge as much money as they can on it, regardless of how much it costs in other countries. Democracy hasn't failed the US, the US has failed democracy. The Electoral College, touted as "the only fair way" by overwhelmingly right-wing shitheads, grants extra points to political parties based on whether a state votes for that party in majority. The basic principle of democracy is "everyone gets a vote", but the Electoral College adds a point multiplier to its function, and the effect is so unbalanced that a majority of people can vote for one candidate but the Electoral College points result in the other candidate winning the presidency. And the US loves to shut down polling booths and concentrate a handful of voting locations in places where the poor and disenfranchised have a harder time getting to. In 2016, there were multiple stories about busloads of voters being pulled over because there were no polling points in their neighbourhoods and they had organised a bus to get them to a poll. A majority of these bus services being pulled over and stopped by police seemed to be elderly black voters. America has been taking steps to undermine democracy for years, and we're seeing a run-up to an event that sees some Republican shithead say "well, this system doesn't seem to be working, so we're gonna stop doing this". Capitalism only stands to fail America in the long run, and in certain fields like the pharmaceutical industry, it's already failing the US. Growth cannot be sustained forever - that's a fact. But democracy? The US is actively undermining democracy. Democracy is a fine concept, the issue is the absolutely buttfuck awful way the US utilizes it. --- So you don't get to be a saint, martyrs never last this long Now Playing: Skyrim, Final Fantasy X-2 |
| Topic | I've been playing Mega Man X3 for a few days. Is it just me, or is harder than 2 |
| MrMallard 04/08/20 12:50:52 PM #19 | Maybe not, but in regards to farmable areas, I think 3 has a glut of them compared to 1 and 2. The only area I really knew about in 1 was the area before the last boss fight, where you can equip the shield and keep busting up those catapillers for health and weapon energy and stuff. In 2, there was an area right at the end of Morph Moth's stage where you could grind those green bugs. In 3, it feels like every second stage has a pretty safe energy farming method. Like right now, I'm at the start of some hangar stage - I think it's Gravity Beetle. And there's a ladder between two platforms, and on both platforms there are these two purple dudes who can aim their long snoots. It's a no brainer to switch from platform to platform, collecting energy. In another stage, there's an area with those green cannons that fold down to ankle height if you get too close. You can zip back and forth between the two cannons pretty easily. I dunno, maybe it's because I'm getting my ass kicked so thoroughly kicked in 3 that I'm looking for opportunities to fill my E-Tanks, but it feels like there's been a substantial increase in energy farming areas in 3 over 1 or 2. --- So you don't get to be a saint, martyrs never last this long Now Playing: Skyrim, Final Fantasy X-2 |

| MrMallard 04/08/20 12:26:08 PM #7 | I think X is still my favorite game in the series. 2 felt like a step back - my guess is that they spent a couple of years working on X before dropping it onto the SNES, and then they made 2 in a year to fit the standard Mega Man yearly release schedule. Even 3 is a year after 2 if I'm not mistaken - but 2 feels particularly... limp. Even with my favorite X Robot Master design in Morph Moth, the level design just doesn't hold up. I'm not disliking X3, but it's a real kick in the nuts so far with the difficulty. --- So you don't get to be a saint, martyrs never last this long Now Playing: Skyrim, Final Fantasy X-2 |

| MrMallard 04/08/20 10:11:07 AM #33 | It's a public safety commercial that's meant to shock people. Ads like this, at least when I was younger, tended to air around 6pm-8pm - so basically dinner time. Flagging a PSA, no matter how tasteless and intentionally shocking, goes against what that PSA is going for. Then again, given that the target audience are drivers - who are anywhere from 16 to 80+ - I guess I can see why there's a case for age restricting this, at least on Kids YouTube. You don't need some 6 year old stumbling across a commercial where his demographic get crushed to death by a car. 12 and up, through, I don't have a huge issue with this video not being age restricted. A part of these PSA's function is to scare kids, who'll hopefully pester and guilt their parents into obeying road laws more stringently. --- So you don't get to be a saint, martyrs never last this long Now Playing: Skyrim, Final Fantasy X-2 |

| MrMallard 04/07/20 2:52:02 AM #9 | Nope. I can sympathize with the "innocence lost" angle of his character, but he became a Death Eater because his crush married his high school bully. Everything he did for Harry Potter was because he had a gross incel boner for his mum, even years after his role in her death. So he reformed and worked with Dumbledore in some convoluted suicide-by-proxy plan to take down the Death Eaters. It doesn't make his actions post-Hogwarts any better, falling into a racial superiority group because the one person who pitied him didn't desire him as a romantic partner. All of that is one thing. There might be holes in what I'm saying, and if I'm wrong in certain points then I can accept that. But one thing that's irrefutable is how much of a prick he was to innocent students during his "service" to Dumbledore. He was a grown man bullying school children out of bitterness, to the point that he was Neville Longbottom's greatest fear as expressed by the Boggart. The man took out his bitterness on school children, and I think that's a particularly shitty angle that the books didn't take into account when Harry Potter named one of his kids after the man, citing him to be "one of the bravest men I've ever met". | MrMallard 04/05/20 12:24:30 PM #3 | AsucaHayashi posted... did you watch it? Huh, interesting take. I just have a general disinterest in war movies, shouldn't have gone in on 1917 like I did without having seen it. But you made a good point. I didn't see 1917, so that's my bad. Dunkirk is probably the epitome of what I'm talking about. It's a decent enough flick, but as much as I've learned about WWI and II, I don't give a fuck about applying artistic license to a real conflict that real people died for. I think it's really shallow, and I think it's a cheap con to go "these men died for you!! respect them!!!" Because even if the movie doesn't lean heavily into that, you'll have so many people riding your ass expecting you to pay lip service to the people who actually died after watching a $100 million recreation, almost always following in the shadow of a better movie, or at least a movie that didn't drive a watermelon-sized set of generic genre themes down your throat with a sledgehammer. Saying that, there have been times where a large scale recreation has been important on several levels. I'm never going to talk shit on Saving Private Ryan because that's a historically significant movie. That's a movie that WW2 veterans have held in high esteem as capturing the essence of the Battle of Normandy. I can respect that. But I just don't go in for those themes of brotherhood and sacrifice and hardship in a movie, repeated ad nauseum. I'll respect the people who actually died, I don't need movie after movie knocking it into my head with a pipe wrench. 1917 might be different, but I'm just not interested in watching it. I've seen Gallipoli, I've seen some of Saving Private Ryan, I've seen Beneath Hill 60, I've seen Dunkirk. I don't like war movies, even ones that strive to be different. I just don't like them. Even though the concept is so offbeat, it was immensely more interesting to see the de-radicalisation of a Nazi Youth through his genuine connection with a human being he's been conditioned to hate, and then have an added bonus of seeing Germany's fortunes change over the course of the movie corresponding with the shifting of the boy's worldview, than it was to see droves of young men dive into the mud and slaughter all over again, or to see tanks get shelled or planes get shot out of the sky. They all feel so dehumanising, and maybe intentionally so - but it's the human stories with a greater point and/or theme than "this conflict was a tragedy and we should respect the people who died in it" - which isn't a message I need to be taught again and again and again, because I'm already on the same page - that interest me. Maybe 1917 takes a different approach. Maybe it's not Two Brothers: The War Movie, and is simply a different perspective on the war that isn't from a frontline soldier - maybe more on a runner, like a part of Gallipoli was. But I'm so sick to death of the same old shit that My interest level in that movie has basically bottomed out. I've learned about WWI and II from my country's viewpoint, and I'll gladly learn more about either conflict in an academic setting. But the prospect of watching another war movie, even with its nuances and different focus point or what have you, is less enjoyable to me than choking on my own tongue at times. --- So you don't get to be a saint, martyrs never last this long Now Playing: Skyrim, Final Fantasy X-2 |

| MrMallard 04/05/20 10:50:32 AM #1 | Midsommar was a very visually intense movie. I loved the bright colours and the weird offbeat tone of the movie, and the visual effects were pretty excellent. I didn't like it as much as Hereditary, though, and I thought Midsommar was way too long. Every part of that movie felt like it belonged there, but my friend rented the Director's Cut which clocked in at nearly 3 hours - that was a long ass time to be watching a movie, and while it probably benefitted the surreal tone of the movie, I didn't think the movie had to be that long. It wasn't bad, but it inspired fatigue. Much prefer Hereditary. Jojo Rabbit was pretty good. Of course it was on the nose at times, it's meant to be a dark comedy, but I loved Taika Waititi's performance as Hitler (with a nod to I'm not a fan of Oscar bait war movies like 1917 - war movies have their place in cinema, but I'm not interested in these cinematic stories of heroics and brave men facing death and hardship to overcome. I respect soldiers and their sacrifices, but I don't need some award-baiting director to slap me in the face with their nutsack with every theme, leitmotif and subtext-laced line to prove that they can make a gritty, real, Saving Private Ryan-esque war movie. I'll respect the men who died for the sake of freedom, and I can respect depictions of their struggle for their historical merit, accuracy and earnest care for these brave soldiers who sacrificed everything for the world that we live in - at a baseline, I can respect what these movies are meant to stand for - but I won't respect another $100 million war movie made to win awards, made in a glut of war movies that flounder in the same basic themes as the last lavishly budgeted war flick. I don't like war movies. I do, however, like Jojo Rabbit's take on war. It's a story about civilians in times of war, with the conflict happening offscreen and directly affecting the characters at the end. How does war affect society? And Jojo Rabbit is an especially interesting case, because it's set in Nazi Germany, from the viewpoint of a Nazi-idealizing little boy. You have little tricks and tropes that are used to depict WW2, like La Resistance, but the movie's offbeat humor comes from the stark reality of seeing a Nazi youth growing up in Nazi Germany, dressed like a Nazi robot and asking German citizens for scrap metal to feed the failing German war machine. War is a factor in these character's lives, and you know they're on the wrong side of history in so many ways, but with its strong character arcs, excellent chemistry between the actors and unabashed dark humor mixed with serious dramatic themes, there's so much more to this movie as a piece of cinema than a lot of movies that focus on the time-tested themes and motifs of the blockbuster war movie. I thought this movie's themes really resonated with today's political clinate, with the conflict at the heart of the movie stemming from radicalisation. A story of radical hate being broken down by the forming of a human connection, an attempt to identify and document for hateful purposes morphing into genuine interest in the person they're asking. It's a good theme, and I think it's underutilized in movies. Every actor got at least one great lick in. Rebel Wilson I really appreciated the passage of time in this movie. It takes place over six months, and it ends with I mean shit, it even got a plug from Mel Brooks. It's a solid movie that carries the spirit of his work, unabashedly taking the piss out of Nazis, while thoroughly dismantling the tenants that bigotry are built on in favor of respect, kindness and knowledge of "the other". It was a very entertaining watch, and I liked it much more as a whole than Midsommar. I've got a similar issue with Midsommar that I do with Joker. I like both movies, and I think a lot of the more scenic, offbeat moments in those movies - stuff like the fridge scene in Joker, or the long, lingering shots of the Swedish revellers in Midsommar - contribute heavily to the mood that both movies are trying to set up. But ultimately, there's some fat that can be cut to make a more cohesive movie. I liked Joker, but it had a ton of these nothing-scenes that exist only to add to the dreary, downtrodden mood of the movie. At some point, you've gotta cut your losses, expect your audience to get your point, and move on with your movie. Midsommar was visually gorgeous, but you can't tell me that they could have lightened up on some of the framing, or cut a little bit more of those aesthetic shots instead of going for these long, long one-take shots. It's gorgeous, and it adds to the mood and aesthetic of the movie - I like it - but there's a point where it all starts to feel like chaff, and while it's very nice to look at, I felt restless because I've already seen like 40 minutes of these establishing shots and I'm rapidly approaching my threshold. Not everything has to be shot and edited for utility, but even with as great as these more entrenched, heavily thematic movies can be, there's a point where you need to stop. I dug what Midsommar was going for, but it felt pretty bloated by the end and that last 5 minutes of the movie - while arguably the best shot of the movie, and a surreal, cathartic sort of release after the rest of the movie kept blue-balling you - was mostly enjoyable for the fact that the m |
