SO!! ZETTA!! SLOW!!

I never really got the hang of TWEWY's battle system and mostly focused on Neku. I think either Joshua or Beat had a pretty easy combat input so I did do it with them, but most of the time I really focused on Neku because I wasn't ambidextrous (and ambiseeing?) enough to be focusing on both. I did play this when I was 14 or so, so maybe I'd be better at it now.

This is the first time I've ever heard anyone refer to Kingdom Hearts as a collect-a-thon and trying to figure it out is only making me more confused.

I get that, I just refer to it like that because it kinda filled that role for me, with all the collectibles like the Dalmatians, hidden chests or stuff you had to backtrack for once you got High Jump/Glide, hunting synthesis materials,...

I'm one of the few who prefers KH 1 to KH 2, I think. It might have something to do with the fact that KH was one of my first (if not actual first) console game experiences. It was my first collect-a-thon, something the second one didn't recreate as well as the first one did. Exploring all these Disney worlds (even though it's baffling that they start you off with Wonderland and the Olympus Coliseum, even though I understand Wonderland might not've really fit later in the game) for treasure was just such a blast. KH II was a bit too on the nose with the whole DARKNESS spiel, which gets pretty grating, even though the combat does feel very satisfying.

I did play CoM, I don't think it has too much impact on Roxas' story in KH II. I'm also playing through Birth By Sleep now for the first time, which I'm very happily enjoying a lot.

I'll buy digital if I can't get my hands on a physical copy (or the physical copy is silly expensive) or if it's a game I know I'll play for a long time (like FIFA, because I generally buy one every four years) to avoid wear-and-tear on the disc.

I think what also sets Overwatch apart from other shooters like it is that all these characters feel like they have a personality and a story themselves. It's not necessarily deep or ground-breaking, but it is identifiable, while characters in other shooters like Overwatch might have really cool designs, but nothing beyond that.

Also very fond of Wind Waker. Exploring that world is really a blast and Dragon Roost Island is easily a top 10 game music track.

Also love Hotline: Miami. It and Assault Android Cactus are two games I can think of that are pretty challenging but never in a punishing way. Games that are hard and then punish you for losing on top of it just become frustrating and when you finally beat them you're just shouting at your screen going FUCK YOU YA PIECE OF SHIT I WIN! Hotline: Miami (and AAC) can have those moments, but because it is so quick and easy to get back into the action, finally winning gives a much more satisfactory feeling.

H:M also just does a great job style-wise, with that 80's setting.

I really like Final Fantasy XII and never understood why people criticize it so much. The gambit system serves to make random encounters less mundane; you don't really have to do too much to get past those, but I never really encountered a boss or a big fight where I could just let it play itself. I don't mind Vaan as the protagonist either; he's like the companion in Doctor Who, not the main figure but the audience identification figure. You can't explain the world to Balthier/Ashe/Basch because they know it already. Vaan serves that purpose. The alternative would be too use codex entries, but nobody really liked that in XIII.

I love Ivalice in general as well. I was always wowed by the architecture and life in all the cities.

The wipe at the end is the opening of the comic storyline they were presenting between the two films, and it absolutely advances the arcs of those left behind. And is there something wrong with doing something purely for the drama? Movies aren't always only about individual characters. In fact, Game of Thrones would have been doing itself a service in its final season if it was more holistic in its approach to worldbuilding, rather than crafting moments for the sake of progressing characters to arbitrary ends.

Well yes, but I wouldn't compare Game of Thrones to Marvel in that sense. Tony's guilt at Peter's death didn't hit me in IW. It got to me in Endgame, seeing his interactions with his daughter and him realizing how Peter was reflected in that. That's when I cared about the "Mr Stark I don't feel so good".

In that sense I think Endgame does a much better job at worldbuilding; it needs only a couple of shots and scenes to give the image of how Earth has('nt) moved on post-snap. I love the scenes with Steve and Nat, counterbalanced by Tony living the life as much as it can be lived in that world.

Neither do I agree with diminishing Thanos' and his army in Endgame; they were already a joke in IW. The torture guy got taken out VERY easily by Tony, Strange and Peter and the lady warrior and her friends also jobbed pretty hard in the initial fight with Vision, SW, Cap and Nat and later on against Nat, SW and BP's captain.

I mean, in their 'defense' I also think they were shafted in all the internal arguments between the MCU and Marvel TV. Those final scenes in IW just reek of having been planned to include AoS, Defenders, maybe even Runaways and C&D but those shows were so detached from the movie universe they couldn't get connected.

I disagree. I would've been able to suspend my disbelief a little more if characters had bitten it throughout the movie, but the wipe at the end just made me feel like they were doing it all purely for the drama, not actually advance anybody's story arc.

This is definitely a unique take!

Infinity War is a bunch of action scenes, making a joke about everyone other than Thanos (man did that torture wizard guy ever job HARD) all to build up to a "oh no all these characters who will obviously make it back next movie died oh noooo". Mr Stark I don't feel so good who cares he was a popular actor in a popular film as if they're going to write him out after one film, same for all the BP people and all the Guardians.

Like I said, the only saving grace in that movie is that it serves as a leadup to the drama in Endgame and all the Thanos and Gamora scenes, because there's actual character development and backstory there.

Endgame was a perfect ending. Infinity War is a bad movie that really only serves to set up Endgame (save for the Thanos+Gamora scenes) but in that sense, as a prologue, it does fit that arc.

The only controversial thing about this list is that 4, a generation that had HGSS (the only Pokemon games to make it into the last contest!) as lowest. I haven't played SS or SM but leaving those out I would probably only swap 3 and 4.

natures and abilities and evs and ivs and the split are mostly for the player's advantage. only expert trainers take advantage of them at all, and even then not very effectively

Sure, but take that Gyarados for example (used by Lance). It has Intimidate, so if you're starting with a physical attacker, you're already out. It's got a decently high Sp Def, but also a good amount of resistances due to its typing, especially if you don't have an Electric type (move). So if you're switching or just trying to whittle it down, it can use Dragon Dance to boost it stats AND it has Waterfall, an 80 power Physical water move running off of its already sky-high attack.

Fighting a Gyarados is much easier pre Gen IV.

Yeah, I think the difficulty curve in GSC is fine. You'll be underleveled when you get to the E4, but they're pretty weak so you'll probably make it through just fine. Only the Champion might give you trouble if you don't have an ice move.

It becomes a lot more problematic in HGSS when the levels of Johto trainers aren't increased but the difficulty has gone up because you have to contend with natures and abilities and most importantly, the physical/special split. You haven't known true despair until you've faced a (post-) Gen IV Gyarados without an Electric Type, let me tell ya. And while Kanto does level up significantly, they level up the Kanto Champion as well, which will result in you being underleveled when you face him.

For someone whos never played Gen 2 before, which version would you recommend?

HG/SS, but Crystal if you really wanto to stick purely to Gen II.

I really wouldn't say Kanto was given equal time. Viridian Forest got burned down, Mt Moon got reduced to a room or two, Rock Tunnel is completely empty and there's just very little to do in the towns. I still think it's super cool but I also think it has the most impact when you're a kid who played Gen I and then got to Gen II and had their mind blown by that reveal after beating Lance which is indescribable.

I think Gen II's biggest strength is the new Pokmon; I think the Gen II dex is pretty comfortably the best one. Even weak Pokemon like Ledian just have neat designs in my opinion. It is a shame that they're all locked away in Kanto which creates ridiculous scenarios; Houndour and Slugma are introduced as new Fire Pokemon, yet are locked in Kanto, leaving you to Cyndaquil and Magmar in the base game as your only options. Crystal grants you Growlithe but you can only get a Fire Stone in...Kanto, which is also required to evolve Silver-exclusive Vulpix. Morty is a Ghost-type trainer who could've used Misdreavus, the new Ghost Pokemon, but why do that when he can have a Ghastly and 2 Haunters instead? Oh, you want to try the new Dark-type? Well, hope you like Umbreon, because we're gonna lock the rest of 'em up in Kanto! Crystal at the very least dumped Sneasel in the Ice Path. I can maybe understand keeping some new Pokemon in Kanto (like Larvitar) to keep that place exciting, but the majority of the choices in spread are pretty baffling.

Even if it doesn't change things up, it still has all the positives of the previous improvements. Not every installment in a series needs to make big changes; the presentation in Gen V simply outdoes the surrounding entries. And calling the gameplay weak seems kind of absurd when it's the same system as in Gen IV and better than the previous generations. I believe Gen V also introduced multi-use TMs and a few alternative battle methods which later games dropped, such as rotation and triple battles. These were underutilized like double battles, but were still a neat feature when they happened.

Oh, absolutely. That "weak" probably came off a bit more snobby than I intended; as you say, it's still the peak of all generations that came before it, I was just saying that it doesn't have a change to massively changes the combat like previous generations did with types, Special split, natures and abilities and physical/special split.
