No, it's been observed that the vast majority of people are completely asymptomatic or have symptoms no worse than the common cold. Very few people require hospitalization or even a doctor's visit. If we were able to quickly and efficiently test almost everyone, you would find that the mortality rate would be very low because many people that have it simply aren't feeling it.

Does it still spread like a motherfucker? Yes, yes it does. So some degree of prevention is needed. Isolate the at risk, test vigorously, practice proper hand washing, wear a mask if you're sick, don't touch your face, don't get too close to other people. Basic things that make sense.

Giving up full autonomy, putting your life and future in the hands of the government and world powers indefinitely (and hoping they somehow do the right thing), nuking the economy and supply chain.. it's not the sensible thing to do. We can't let the cure or solution be worse than the disease. Agree to disagree, but we'll see who ends up being right in the end.

Nearly forty thousand people are dead in your country alone. Even if you reduce it to a statistic, like that it's 40,000 deaths from 700,000 infections and thus "not the worst thing that could happen", that's still a five-figure death toll. Re-opening the country and putting everyone back to work only ensures that more people will contract the disease, and more will probably die from it.

A majority of people aren't dropping dead, but close to 40,000 people have dropped dead. And by the time the curve starts flattening, there will almost certainly be another couple tens of thousands of deaths. Human life should be prioritised above all else, especially if the alternate priority involves putting even more people in harm's way.

I agree that handing over rights is garbage, and American shit like the Patriot Act and the powers granted to the TSA, FBI and CIA in the wake of 9/11 makes it hard for folks to trust that they'll have their rights back at the end of all this - because a lot of the freedoms that the US conceded post-9/11 haven't been given back.

But this isn't a bunch of yahoos flying a plane into a building, and the effect isn't quite as sensationalized as the War in Iraq was in 2003. These restrictions aren't going into effect to fight a supremely trumped up enemy that's declared war on the USA. It's a disease that's roosted in countries around the world and is killing people off at an incredible pace, and we don't have the tools to ward off its damage because we've never encountered this strain before. It's easy to say "well we need to open everything up again for the financial sector, no use hurting the economy", but that means possibly exposing hundreds of thousands more workers to a disease that they don't have an immunity to - and a significant amount of those workers stand to die from it. This is a global pandemic that everyone is going through, that everyone is making concessions for. This isn't a US-centric problem, and every country in lockdown will have a moment of reckoning when these restrictions will be lifted.

It is not some stupid Unite the Right-level horseshit that a bunch of racist rednecks need to be shitting all over the place about - to the point of blocking emergency entrance and exit points to hospitals.

The coronavirus is not so insignificant that we should be risking human life to drive corporate profits again.

The biggest casualty of the AV Club changing hands was that they deleted all their old AV Undercover videos. They only left the new ones up, and they were over-produced pieces of indie pop shit, not a bunch of people sitting in a small room playing covers.

Like damn - even when they moved out of the round room and into a bigger studio, it still felt pretty chill. There's a really good cover of Linger that some Redditor managed to save, I've got that shit downloaded somewhere. And then you've got Tubthumping by They Might Be Giants, or Without You by Superchunk.

AV Undercover was getting shit, the POWR BTTM cover of Mr Jones really got under my skin for example, but there were a wealth of awesome covers on that show. And they wiped the fucking lot.

Daisy Ridley is probably a decent enough actress. I really don't get the hate for her as an actor when literally everyone's characterisation went out the window after Episode 7. The entire cast got fucked, and people like to pin it on Daisy Ridley being a wooden/boring/"plain" actress.

Like damn, Finn had a solid arc in TFA. It could have been built upon, but come TLJ he instantly reverts from being a brave man who picked up a lightsaber to protect his friend to a coward who tries to sneak out under the rebellion's nose. Poe became more of a dense asshole in TLJ, but come TRoS he's a bland cardboard cutout, just like Finn. Even his shoehorned backstory doesn't help, it's all a crock of shit.

I thought Rey's junker backstory was interesting, and I thought her and Han Solo had a legitimate rapport. I thought she had a decent rapport with Luke Skywalker for a while too, though her character in TLJ is definitely weaker than her initial outing. And then in TRoS, she's reduced to a bland function of the script - she tries to elevate the material, but it doesn't work because the material is shit. TRoS chewed these characters up and spit their moist, misshapen forms out for the world to enjoy. It's a cynical product that reduces everything these characters could have been.

The main cast worked with what they had. They shouldn't be considered the nadir of why these movies are shit - the issue here is a clear lack of planning, wildly different direction between the movies and Disney meddling in the tone of each movie post-TFA. TLJ feels like they're trying to give the series a similar appeal as Guardians of the Galaxy. TRoS is so rushed, and it has such on-the-nose fanservice with Palpatine, the different voices, the Death Star star destroyers etc., that it feels like they tried to pull a hail mary in regards to fanservice - to the point that the final product doesn't even feel like a proper movie.

Asking the real questions

Again - the deal with Pell is that he was originally summoned to testify in another pedophile priest case. A man he had lived with was on trial for molesting children during the time period of him and Pell living together, and the police wanted Pell to testify about whether he knew about anything that had allegedly happened around this time.

Cardinal Pell could have testified that he knew nothing. He could have given a boilerplate statement to the police and hoped for everything to just blow over. But instead of testifying, or even so much as giving the police a statement assuring his ignorance in the matter and his overall innocence, he fled the country.

When the police come knocking, asking for information on a pedophile priest who's in the process of being convicted, and you flee the country? That doesn't look very innocent. And it isn't surprising that allegations were made that Pell took part in some of the molestation that this other priest was accused of.

But for the sake of argument, giving that shit channel Sky News the thinnest level of credibility possible, let's say that Cardinal George Pell is innocent. Let's say that he never abused his power within the Catholic church to get away with child rape, or that he never used his power to cover up instances of child rape by other senior officials in the Catholic church.

Why would he flee the country instead of providing testimony to the police? Rather than stand in a court of law against a disgraced member of the church and asserting his own ignorance in the matter, painting his own innocence by doing so - why would a Cardinal leave the country and refuse testimony? Why would he have to be extradited back to Australia against his will? These are not the actions of an innocent man.

And I understand the points that could be levelled against me here - what if you were called in to testify for a serious crime, and you didn't want to be there? What if by showing up and making a statement, people would think you're guilty of collusion or of engaging in the same acts anyway? There was no way for George Pell to come out of this looking innocent!

To which I would say - if I had nothing to do with a crime, and no knowledge of it occurring, there's no harm in giving that statement to the police and calling it a day. Maybe the police show up five more times to corroborate the story - well shit, since I didn't know anything the first time and refuse to get involved with whoever's getting nailed by the police, I don't have anything to worry about. I don't leave my home and go into hiding to avoid the police. I certainly don't leave the country to avoid questioning or to avoid testifying on the matter.

George Pell hasn't convinced me of his innocence, nor has he convinced a significant portion of Australia of it either. The only reason he's out of jail is because his lawyers threw appeal after appeal at the wall, trying to find anything that could spring him out. John Howard, our former prime minister, wrote the man a positive character reference - and other PMs and politicians have gone to bat for him too, saying he's a good man who doesn't deserve to be locked away. But the question remains - when the police asked him if he knew about a housemate of him molesting children, why did he flee the country? If he truly had no knowledge of it and could assert his innocence, why did he instead choose to get on a plane and leave the country to avoid questioning?
