Anime of the Decade:

Honourable Mentions: Attack on Titan, A Place Further than the Universe, Mob Psycho 100, Kill la Kill, Jojos Bizarre Adventure

I find it mildly interesting that none of the big 3 Isekai shows ended up being in contention, it certainly was one of the bigger genres of the past decade. Of the stuff that did get votes, Attack on Titan was the major new hit, though other big name shonen shows like Hunter x Hunter and My Hero Academia were a little overlooked.
While A Place Further than the Universe was the best 4 cute girls doing cute things shows.

3rd Place: Puella Magi Madoka Magica

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S09mEDCqSx4

Runner Up: Steins;Gate

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vsr-UiTPWsU&list=EL3n57TtnN3tY&index=3&t=0s

Winner: Monogatari Series

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B6ZwmEse40c

Well these were the three most hyped series entering the contest. Bakemonogatari was an alright show, but that was back in 09, with some of the final few eps being released in 2010. On its own, it would have been a series I really enjoyed gave a good score to and then moved on. I dont really read LNs ahead of time, I just watch whatever content gets animated and if the stuffs good, then Ill catch up on it.

I wasnt prepared then for the sheer amount of quality content that would follow. 2012, Nisemonogatari? Oh cool Senjougaharas back and the sisters get some shine, awesome. Then I get the Nekomogatari arcs elevating a character I wasnt all that into. Then you get the Monogatari Second Season stuff and the quality content just keeps piling up throughout the decade and before you know it, Monogataris dished out like a 100 eps worth of good memorable storylines. The Monogatari series is now known for a lot of different things, tons of waifus, many different openings and a looot of talking.

Its also got a lot of offputting content which is why I thought Steins;Gate would win out. The toothbrush scene, the interactions with Hachikuji and some of the fanservice content do make some people uncomfortable so I get that this series isnt for everyone.

Steins;Gate, not much more to say, best videogame adaptation? Its up there. Okabe has now firmly established himself as the greatest protagonist of the decade with Kurisu showing shes the best female lead there is. With this show, youre getting well written characters, a gripping intricate plot and a lot of fun subplots. This is the type of show you can binge watch on Netflix because youll be so engrossed into Okabes story.

As for Madoka, Shaft x Urobuchi was one hell of a successful collaboration. The original plotline was pretty short, took just 12 eps to tell one of the most dramatic magical girl stories there is. This was recapped into a pair of movies and expanded upon with a third that sorta changed everything. Madokas the darkest show here, which you wouldnt have guessed based on the character designs. Though how it applies that heavy mood is also effective, it breaks a lot of characters down emotionally and mentally. Again this shows probably not for everyone, but if youre ok with a darker fantasy show with some horror undertones, its worth a shot.

Best Female Character:

Honestly for both character awards, you can throw out everyone, turns out this decade was all about the two winners.

Honourable Mentions: Oshino Shinobu, Oumae Kumiko, Phosphophyllite, Homura Akemi,

3rd Place: Mai Sakurajima Rascal does not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai

https://images5.alphacoders.com/973/thumb-1920-973364.jpg

Runner up: Senjougahara Hitagi Monogatari Series

https://images4.alphacoders.com/827/thumb-1920-827121.png

Winner: Makise Kurisu Steins;Gate

https://images3.alphacoders.com/165/thumb-1920-165087.jpg

Ok so Christinas everyones favourite tsundere both in show & IRL. Shes a good foil for Okabe, always calling him out whenever his shit gets too weird. She comes off as a smart and serious character, but very quickly some of her own quirkier traits get exposed. Shes got a good blushing game to boot.

Her romance angle with Okabe didnt feel forced either. The more you learn about her backstory, the more you can empathise with her initial behaviour. And as much as she spends time fighting Okabe, in his time of need, shell be one of his strongest allies.

I do wonder if the movie did anything to bump up her standings with the fandom. She takes a more active role there

Best Character Male:

Honourable Mentions: Saitama, Askeladd, Arataka Reigen, Hisoka, Araragi Koyomi, Keima Katsuragi

3rd Place: Joseph Joestar Jojos Bizarre Adventure

https://images5.alphacoders.com/831/thumb-1920-831643.jpg

Runner up: Hachiman Hikigaya My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU

https://images4.alphacoders.com/736/thumb-1920-736321.png

Winner: Okabe Rintaro Steins;Gate

https://images6.alphacoders.com/862/thumb-1920-862332.jpg

Now I wonder how on earth Okabe x Kurisu didnt win in a landslide the best couple award. It could just be that Araragi x Senjougahara are better together, but individually the Steins;Gate pair crushed it.

Okabes of course a total heroic character, saving the girl and more, but a huge number of main characters are all about saving their loves ones or the world or something. So why is he so far ahead of the rest?
Mad Scientist Houoin Kyouma, catchphrase El Psy Congroo. Hes the kind of guy youd never want to associate with IRL and his eccentric behaviours always getting called out by more normal characters. For the viewer though, you love to see a guy act so confidently in such a weird way. It helps that not everything is bullshit as he really did achieve time travel, which makes him a weirdo genius. This goofs just much more charismatic than the rest.

As for Joseph and Hachiman, they couldnt be any more different. Ones a large ham, confident, strong but rash, though its ok because everything will eventually work itself out. While the others a loner than apparently a lot of fans of the show identified with. Though acting like just his loner self IRL might not be the best idea. His character does grow thanks to his association with some pretty wonderful girls, and he does work really hard to solve whatever the issue of the day is. So as much as he isolates himself, hes still capable of some heroic feats.

Best Drama:

Honourable Mentions: Attack on Titan, A Place Further than the Universe, From the New World, Re: Zero-Starting Life in Another World-, March Comes in Like a Lion

Few former winners in that batch, Drama will often be the favourite to win out AOTY.

3rd Place: Monogatari Series

https://images7.alphacoders.com/714/thumb-1920-714776.jpg

Runner: Puella Magi Madoka Magica

https://images8.alphacoders.com/418/thumb-1920-418455.jpg

Winner: Steins;Gate

https://images2.alphacoders.com/631/thumb-1920-631095.jpg

Maybe a sign of things to come, but Steins;Gate and Madoka were ahead of the rest by a significant margin. They both had good results in Best Story, now best drama, theres a clear trend. And why wouldnt something like Steins;Gate do well well here. Its one of the best received anime series outright, with a very well-liked lead and at the very minimum two cool girls that were his driving motivation to save the day. Steins;Gate has the ingredients to be considered one of the top contenders for AOTD, it winning best overall drama for the decade is not surprising, nor is it undeserved.

Madoka, turns out this might be Urobuchis crowning glory, hes worked on other highly regarded shows, but its going to be difficult to step out of Madokas shadow. Everything kinda broke right for it. Shafts animation style, combined with a darker edge for whats normally a lighter hearted genre and a haunting soundtrack, youve got yourself a winner.

Monogatari was kept relevant by releasing content regularly enough and it might have the highest number of great individual scenes. Maybe not the highest of highs, but a pretty good floor and some consistency to the quality is what kept it up there. Maybe if all of Attack on Titan had been covered this decade it would taken its spot or even won the whole thing. Its also possible A Place Further than the Universe if released earlier would have gained more esteem, or it might have been forgotten the way Erased has been since release.

Best Comedy:

Honourable Mentions: No Game No Life, Humanity has Declined, Nichijou, Asobi Asobase

Is Humanity has Declined really that good? I only saw the first ep (maybe 2) and besides having a catchy theme song, it didnt grab me straight away like the top 3 shows did. Asobase was the best of the rest, in what was a crowded field for school comedies.

3rd Place: Monthly Girls Nozaki-Kun

https://images8.alphacoders.com/691/thumb-1920-691946.png

Runner Up: Kaguya-Sama: Love is War

https://image.myanimelist.net/ui/5LYzTBVoS196gvYvw3zjwDwv3h5BAkSoURXdfTfuEME

Winner: KonoSuba: God's Blessing on this Wonderful World!

https://www.gamerbraves.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/Kono-Subarashii-Sekai-Ni-Syukufuku-Woi.jpg

Im pretty happy with this top 3, school settings + some romance gives an ideal feel good atmosphere when watching these types of shows. Both Nozaki-Kun and Kaguya have solid casts, good recurring jokes, and specific character combinations that work well. With Nozaki-Kun the most common scenarios are split between jokes in Nozakis apartment and how absurd his shoujo manga can be, and skits at school which means more Seo and one of the better wildcards.

Kaguya for the most part is about the stuff taking place in the Student Council Room and the gags are tied to the showdowns between Shirogane and Kaguya. With the two often refusing to back down, laughs come from what kind of trap theyve laid down or the comebacks they use. With Chika being ruining all those carefully laid plans.
Is KonoSuba the best Isekai of the past decade? I know its my favourite of the series in Isekai Quartet, but clearly fans embraced a series that didnt take the concept too seriously. All of the main characters are terrible people and they more often than not get whats coming to em. But as terrible as these guys are, theyre also pretty endearing.

Although we like to dunk on Deem for their many underwhelming shows, theyve at least gotten this one right.

Runner up: Kogarashi Sentiment Monogatari Series

https://files.catbox.moe/vnzx93.webm

Winner: Raise Your Flag Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron Blooded Orphans

I liked IBO as far as Gundam series go, but I know its not to everyones taste. Good opening though. Man with a Mission caught the eye with Log Horizon, then they nailed it with Gundam. From the animation you could tell it would have a lot of things youve seen before. A deadly but quiet protagonist like Heero/Setsuna, a Relena type lady, and a blonde villain that sets off Char alarm bells. Then the tone is set by showing this crew is tough, theyre muscular and you get less beams and more heavy swinging of big thick weapons.

I thought Monogatari would LFF itself through the sheer volume of Openings it had this decade. Sure Renai Circulation cant qualify, but Platinum Disco does! The animation being a throwback to an older style of anime it a nice look, I think fansubs threw in yellow subs to enhance that retro feel this was giving off.

There's a lot of good OPs, heading into this one I was fearing past winners like Your Lie in April or Death Parade would come out ahead. Wouldn't have been surprised if an OP with a ton of views on Youtube like Tokyo Ghouls did well, but we've had a time to see what holds up.

But yeah, while for the yearly stuff OP is usually a formality, for decade the fields had more variety than Waifu when that used to be a thing.

Best Ending:

Show of hands, who here skips EDs more often than not? With an OP sometimes youre too lazy to skip through it.

Ok so of course I was the only one to back Uchiage Hanabi! With an entire decade to pick from we were gonna get a really broad range of nominations for both song categories. Weve never had an ED category before though until this year theyve never won the combined category. So this was the chance for the best of the best to stand out

But here are some of the EDs of the decade as voted by you:

5th Place: STYX HELIX Re: Zero Starting Life in another World-

https://animethemes.moe/video/ReZero-ED1.webm

4th Place: Refrain Boy Mob Psycho 100

https://files.catbox.moe/65qsge.webm

3rd Place: Wareta Ringo - From the New World

https://files.catbox.moe/7ysev5.webm

Runner Up: Magia Puella Magi Madoka Magica

https://files.catbox.moe/2idic3.webm

Winner: No, Thank You! K-On!!

https://files.catbox.moe/fc5obb.webm

Hehe, didnt think heading into this K-On of all the Kyoto Animation projects would be the one to claim their first (maybe only?) win!

K-On EDs have generally had better receptions than the Openings, I think if wed done the previous decade, Please Dont Say Lazy would have also gotten some traction. But No Thank You! does stand on its own. It kinda continues that thing K-On EDs have where instead of being super happy go lucky like in the intros, they have a more blank expression and the animation comes off more like a music video. Also Mio takes the lead and shes a way better singer than Yui

It beats what I thought would have been the expected favourite in Kalafinas Magia, when that show took a dark turn, it was the kind of ED you wanted to reflect the shows mood.

The thing i liked about the Bog was the slow setbacks just drove home the zawa~ and these accumulated defeats made the eventual payoff that much better.
As each step of Kaiji's ridiculously convoluted plan works out, you're going nuts as a viewer, but you're also seeing the bad guys lose their shit in the most dramatic ways possible.

Fight of the Decade

Honourable Mentions: Karasuno vs Shiratorizawa, you guys couldnt agree on what the best Mob fight wasor the best My Hero Academia fightor the best Jojo fight

3rd Place: Saber Alter vs. Berserker Fate/Stay Night: Heavens Feel II

https://vimeo.com/355372287

Runner up: Saitama vs. Boros One-Punch Man

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ErXfj3sbIfU

Winner: Netero vs Meruem Hunter x Hunter

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rTj4vUgyGxM

Topping this award is the fight between the strongest guy the series had been hyping up for a while and the new prodigy hotness that exudes invincibility. But as powerful as Netero was billed, it was all too clear that he was overmatched from the get go.
Would we still get to see and nice epic back and forth fight? Or maybe hell be performing a heroic sacrifice buying time or exposing a weakness for others to capitalise on down the line! Heck, he could also just get squashed to add further despair. We got none of those things.

Netero gave Meruem his best shot, it didnt do much, so he pulled the plug on the fight. Before this all went down we were shown just how strong Meruem was, we also got to see what Netero had to do to achieve such powerful techniques, none of that mattered. A cheap bomb is what ended everything. Not Gon and Killua teaming up, a mass produced WMD activated whenever Netero felt like it was time. It was the best case scenario for humanity, but it also tells us that the world was never truly in danger. Had Meruems threat level escalated, this weapon would have eliminated him sooner or later. Perhaps with a lot more civilian casualties, but it would have worked.

Saitama vs Boros was what that season of One Punch Man was going to have to do at some point. Ever escalating threats coming to the scene, each one flashier than the last.and its like.ok? Boros was the same as the rest, but he came with his own lighting rig!

Im a big Fate fan, a lot of us are Fate fans, but outside of the anime fandom is Fate mainstream yet? Maybe in Japan, but its probably not there yet west side. I say this because so much Fate related content comes with these kickass fights, but they dont interest casual fans. DBZ, Naruto or One Piece fights can get them hyped up, but a visually stunning battle like Saber Alter vs Berserker wont move the needle. I think in part thanks to FGO, weve been getting a lot more Fate animated content of late, so things will change, but of whats already out this fight is special. Weve already seen a ton of great Fate fights not just with Ufotable, Kaleid Liner, Apocrypha, FGO: Babylonia all also had had some shining moments, but here the movie format really helped.

I think if I had made this into something more like Show with the best fights, I may have gotten more centralised results.

Spoilers, nothing was beating Senjougahara x Araragi.

It was a formality on par with Monogatari winning best cast.

Best Couple

Shoutouts to the guys who reserved their +1s for Rider x Waver

Honourable Mentions: Sora x Shiro (No Game No Life), Kaguya Shinmiya x Miyuki Shirogane (Kaguya: Love is War), Madoka Kaname x Akemi Homura (Puella Magi Madoka Magica), Takagi x Nishigata (Teasing Master Takagi-san), Yuuta Togashi x Takanashi (Chuunibyo), Takeo Gouda x Rinko Yamato (My Love Story), Yuu x Touko (Bloom into You), Kumiko Oumae x Reina Kousaka (Sound Euphonium), Mob x Reigen Arataka (Mob Psycho 100)

A decent number of people voted for a romantic pair as their #1 slot, but then just went nuts on the best non-Romantic partnership, of course theres still a majority of proper romantic pairings.

3rd Place: Makise Kurisu x Okabe Rintaro Steins;Gate

https://i.redd.it/jtpfg4gmoum11.png

Runner Up: Azusawagawa Sakuta x Sakurajima Mai Rascal does not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai

https://i.redd.it/2nva2gx8n7d21.png

Winner: Araragi Koyomi x Senjougahara Hitagi

The big two claim top billing here to no ones surprise. Only Araragi and Senjougahara have been building on that relationship for an entire decade. It was already a solid pair established way back in 09, but then Nisemonogatari, Koimonogatari and so forth kept on building on that foundation. These two will always be looking out for each other and in Koimonogatari, they didnt even need to be onscreen together for their
relationship to feel stronger than ever. Monogataris got a ton of great girls, but Senjougahara will always emerge the winner when it comes to Araragis heart. Others may have powerful scenes with him, but viewers will quickly enough come to accept that Araragi and Senjougahara are just meant for each other.

With Mai x Sakuta, this pairing came in much later, near the end of the decade, but it drew many a comparison with Monogatari and quite favourably too. But it sure left a strong impression, with only 13 eps and a movie to show for it.

Next up we go from all these lovey dovey couple to rivals and enemies smacking each other silly. Its time for Fight of the Decade!

Best Story

Honourable Mentions: A Place Further than the Universe.and a whole lot of other shows

Tbh, after A Place Further than the Universe there was no real consensus as to which series had the best storyline. Im the guy who threw one of his votes at Your Name, but what ended up happening was we got a three way race to the top.

3rd Place: From the New World

https://c.wallhere.com/photos/c7/ae/Shinsekai_Yori_anime-112473.jpg!d

Runner Up: Puella Magi Madoka Magica

https://static.zerochan.net/Mahou.Shoujo.Madoka%E2%98%86Magica.full.1242858.jpg

Winner: Steins;Gate

https://www.otakuusamagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/gate00-copy.jpg

Steins;Gate, among one of the best videogame adaptations ever? Its certainly better than the Mortal Kombat or Prince of Persia movies. And one of the reasons why this series did so well was on the strength of its story. (ok it also had a really good pair of leads). Tbh I dont know how much Steins;Gate 0 affected the voting here.
The premise though is all about time travel and how a quirky scientist is trying to achieve it. His work will go slowly go down a darker path and itll be up to him to save everyone who got caught up in this mess. Steins;Gate moves along at a very deliberate pace, it takes its time establishing core concepts while also giving you more backstory on the characters and their motivations.

Madoka, Ive seen it being compared to Evangelion, in the sense that it deconstructs the magical girl genre the way Evangelion deconstructed the mecha genre. Like with Steins;Gate, Im not sure how much the Rebellion movie played a factor in the voting, but Im sure it made just enough of a difference. Madokas one of the darker and more dramatic storylines out there, with the girls finding out that being a Magical Girl just isnt all it was cracked up to be. To make matters worse, youve got a looming impending doom to add to the drama. Add a little character instability and some major shocks and youre left wondering how on earth can they possibly defeat the coming evil. Then when you think shits as bad as can be, the show will just drop another bomb on you. Lot of despair was felt watching this one.

Though the same can apply to From the New World, set in a future where much of humanity has changed, we now all have psychic powers! Only it then shows why thats not necessarily a good thing. A seemingly utopic society, everyone has to follow a lot of rules to keep the peace, so of course every rule gets broken and disaster strikes.

Since all three of these shows were pretty close, the order might differ here.

Which of these 3 shows had the best climax?

+5 MADHOUSE
+3 White Fox
+1 Bones

We already talked about this one a bit in the last topic and I don't have much to add. Surprised not a lot of people voted White Fox, but I guess the most significant contributors along with Steins;Gate for me were Katanagatari and Girls' Last Tour, which I don't think a lot of people watched?

I was definitely a big fan of Noragami for the record.

Edit: Also yes, apparently I remembered Katanagatari when voting on best studio but not for best visuals...in fairness I did decide pretty quickly after thinking about it for 2 minutes that I didn't care enough to vote in best visuals.

People did however watch Re:Zero, the thing is though, I think after their top hits they've got either well liked but kinda niche shows like Jormungand, or kinda divisive like Goblin Slayer

Studio of the Decade

Honourable Mentions: Ufotable, Kyoto Animation

This is mostly going to be about the top 2, cos oh boy did they have some big hitters.

3rd Place: Studio Bones

Known for: My Hero Academia, Mob Psycho 100, Space Dandy, Noragami, Bundo Stray Dogs and Carole & Tuesday

Runner Up: Shaft

Known for: Monogatari Series, Arakawa under the Bridge, Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Nisekoi, March Comes in like a Lion, And Yet the Town Moves

Winner: Madhouse

Known for: Hunter x Hunter, Chihayafuru, No Game No Life, Ace of Diamond, The Tatami Galaxy, A Place Further than the Universe, Parasyte the maxim-, Highschool Of the Dead, One-Punch Man, My Love Story!! & Overlord.

Madhouse came in to this past decade with an already stellar reputation, they had under their belt shows like Cardcaptor Sakura, Yawara!, Trigun, Death Note, Ippo, Monster, Black Lagoon and One Outs, but you look at their catalogue in the 2010s and theyve at the very minimum maintained those high standards.
Their output has been prolific and has produced a number of AOTY winners, they also cover a wide variety of genres. Shonen fans will adore HxH, No Game No Life was one of the best Isekais, Ace of Diamond was a very well received sports series, Ore Monogatari was a wonderful romantic comedy. Its easy to see why they did so well with such a broad range of appeal.

It wasnt a given theyd win either though, because Shaft gave them a true fight. They dont do as many series and when they miss the mark we end up having disastrously bad shows, but when everything clicks, you get some of the highest quality shows that have die hard fans. Madoka and Monogatari are hailed as some of the very best shows out there, but its March that comes in like a Lion that boasts the highest score on MAL.
With Shaft youre going in expecting a signature style, some head tilts, generally solid cinematography and top tier characters. That style can sometimes have a huge effect on their adaptations too. The Nisekoi manga and anime just feel so different.

Studio Bones did surprise me a bit, pipping Kyoto Animation for the 3rd slot, I thought Hyouka, Sound Eupho, Violet Evergarden, Chuu2, Nichijou, Free, Maid Dragon and Disappearance would be enough. This tells me that Mob Psycho 100 was likely the driving force for Bones placing so high. My Hero Academias a great show, but I didnt see it being enough to surpass say a Ufotable level studio. Their other shows are popular enough to either be long runners or have plenty of fans on MAL, but not too many people raved on B8 about Noragami and Bundo Stray Dogs.

Another thing that works in Monogatari's favour is the really low number of filler characters.

Just about everyone matters, like they're in a school but classrooms are often empty besides the main characters.

Just adds to the focus on em

Best Cast

Honourable Mention: Steins;Gate, My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU, Durarara!!

Yeah, so we got votes for large casts of interwining characters with smaller bright moments and smaller more compact crews which made pushes to make each character stand out while having some occasional high impact appearances from more minor characters. There wasn't too much of a trend here.

3rd Place: A Place Further than the Universe

Notable Characters: Tamaki Mari, Kobuchizawa Shirase, Miyake Hinata & Shiraishi Yuzuki

https://i.imgur.com/pQaJKj6.jpg

Runner Up: KonoSuba: God's Blessing on this Wonderful World!

Notable Characters: Sato Kazuma, Aqua, Megumin & Darkness

https://i.redd.it/tf4fdrf42ds21.jpg

Winner: Monogatari Series

Notable Characters: Araragi Koyomi, Senjougahara Hitagi, Hachikuji Mayoi, Kanbaru Suruga, Sengoku Nadeko, Hanekawa Tsubasa, Araragi Karen, Araragi Tsukihi, Ononoki Yotsugi, Oshino Ogi, Oshino Shinobu, Kaiki Deishu & Gaen Izuko.

There are a lot of Monogatari episodes and each arc is really short, but the featured characters almost always shine through when the spotlights on them. This is one of the main strengths of the show, they managed to make the characters feel like they matter and theyre all memorable. Having an OP sung by the characters with a starring role for each arc also makes them look more important.

But this also means that for a while each cast member ascends to the status of main character. Since the stories being told are so good, youll naturally be associating each of them with an enjoyable song + story.
For a number of these characters, youll get one arc featuring the problem of the week, but will then have a later arc which shows how far theyve progressed since resolving their initial issue. So it keeps them fresh in the mind and makes the waifu rankings an ever fluctuating thing as everyone gets a bump post-storyline of the day.

For the other competing series, A Place Further than the Universe was a hugely popular series last year that won almost everything it could. The four main girls developed a strong bond with each other as they supported each other and overcame their vulnerabilities to achieve their goals. It started off looking like any old 4 cute girls doing cute things type of show, but ended up giving you more depth to the cast.

But our runner up KonoSuba aint about giving you big emotional arcs or layers of depth, sure there might be a moment or two here or there. What we get from KonoSuba is a fuckton of antics and a rapid fire number of jokes and punchlines coming mostly from our 4 main leads. Each of them complete idiots and together you just get a deluge of stupidity as they always find ways to make their situation worse. But they do so in such an entertaining way, that youre looking forward to how theyll fuck up the next task.

See, I saw it as Monogatari having its own unique look to it.
The character designs may be more conventional but everything else stood out.
