It's hard for me to comment on that position.

Generally what I'm thinking is that white king is stuck in the center and you probably want to find a way to open things up quickly if possible. The two pawn breaks I'm looking at are f5 and b4, so probably you want to decide which of those you want to organize and then plan around that. (You could also plan for both...for example push f5 and then try and induce him to castle queen side, after which you break open the queen side with b4)

The immediate f5 would look good to me except that Bxh6 does leave you in bit of an awkward position (still probably better though, tbh) What I might do is start with Ng4 and then transition to a queenside attack by preparing with moves like a5 and Rfc8/Rfb8 and then break with b4

f5 by itself is still probably good also (after the Ng4 stuff), but after that I'm unsure how far I want to commit to a kingside attack. I can't clearly see a way to convert quickly, and it feels like it could end up dangerous for black if he pushes too far but then white gets off O-O-O and can open up the kingside files for his rooks. All that said, white's pieces are dis-coordinated enough that it probably turns out good for black anyways, but I think I'd have trouble actually playing that way myself.

If we do this locking thing again, I think a useful thing to add to the Votecount List (noms) tab of the spreadsheet would be a highlight of some sort indicating whether or not a song is locked. Because right now unless I'm missing something it takes some amount of time to differentiate between locked songs and songs that only reached 5 after the deadline.

Medrxiv means not peer reviewed, for the record. Typically I think it's used to get legitimate research out quickly before the peer review process finishes (ie. It would be submitted there and to a proper journal), but I would treat obviously questionable claims with extreme skepticism if medrxiv is the only source, because I think anyone who wants to can get things put up on that site.

All the lockdowns I'm aware of so far have only been shelter in place orders which exclude things like going to the grocery, or people in essential work positions going to work, etc. I'd be a lot more quick to believe we'd do something like that at a national level than I am to believe that we're going to transition to a completely militarized state with no (public) advance notice.

Well your knight is trapped but I don't think it matters? You can play Bxg5 and the bin on d2 seems like it will trade to what seems like it should be a winning endgame. (You don't actually win the piece I don't think but you're already a piece up, and it either allows your knight to escape or forces a bishop for knight trade, unless there's a clever resource I'm missing which there sometimes are in these positions.)

My university went from "graduate/postdoctoral researchers continue business as normal" to "all on-campus research activities suspended effective now" in the span of about 18 hours so that's been interesting. I've been watching this...I think it's okay I guess. Best characters by far are Ibarada and Kanade imo. I will say I view it more as a silly comedy than as any real sort of romance show.

I also recently read My Lesbian Experience With Loneliness. I originally picked it out because the title made it sound like yuri, which it really wasn't at all, but it was still great anyways. What it is is a memoir of the author's experiences with depression, loneliness, and anxiety, and it's written in a very honest fashion without sugarcoating anything, which makes it difficult not to empathize with it on some level. Definitely a big fan of this one.

Yeah that's all also true. Requiring less knowledge of theory is another big reason why I started playing d4. I did play e4 for a bit but got tired of getting 10 moves deep in a Najdorf Sicilian with no idea wtf is happening while feeling like my opponent is still in book.

Well the Sicilian would probably be the best performer by most metrics, but the differences are so small among a few of the top choices it's more about playstyle than anything I think, at least at everything below the top level. (Not the same, but the reason I play 1. d4 as white despite the fact that I consider 1. e4 the "better" opening is because I think closed positional play suits my playstyle better than openings like the Sicilian or some 1. e4 e5 lines)

Grandmasters do overwhelmingly play 1...e5 or 1...c5 (the Sicilian) I think, but even in top classical matches you'll still see stuff like 1...c6, 1...e6, and a few others on occasion.

Aw yeah Crossbell. I do prefer the Sky series but they are pretty much neck-and-neck. Cold Steel also obviously good but probably a tier lower

I was coincidentally rewatching from scenes from Ao today and man I love it. (VGMC noms went up today and I was trying to remember when exactly a particular song from Ao played. Found it almost immediately but then watched the LP I was referencing for like another hour oops)

I'm going through a bit of an opening crisis at the moment. As white I play almost exclusively Queen's Gambit and it works well enough. (Or troll openings when I'm tilted on online blitz...1. c3 2. Na3 3. Nc2 is a favorite for this...also things like trying to put all of my pawns on the 3rd rank for no reason...)

As black though I've been playing lately the French, Caro-Kann, and Sicilian vs 1. e4 and none of them really feel right to me. Maybe it is time for me to transition to 1...e5 but I've hated that since I started playing chess. I tend to prefer solid positional lines to sharp lines that tactical and/or double-edged...so maybe the Petrov? That feels so uninspired though.

If I were betting I'd go with Caruana again yeah. I might have gone Ding before the COVID-19 stuff started but that almost certainly affected his ability to prep and his general mental state. (Though at the point we're at now that might be true of everyone...) They're the pretty clear top 2 in my eyes though, and in pretty much everyone else's I think.

I like Giri. I don't think he'll win but I hope he ends up positive, especially because I think his drawing reputation is not necessarily deserved or is at least way overstated.

Does anyone follow pro chess? Candidates tournament is starting soon and I am pretty excited for that. Hoping for Ding Liren to win because I like him and I want to see a match of him vs Magnus.

Not too surprised that position ended up winning for Black in the engine. I don't know if I'd have stated that just analyzing myself, but it does seem true that the knight is a goner and also those passed pawns seem deadly. (Also worthy of note is that after the computer's suggestion of Rha8--which I probably would not have found--white can't even break the pin on the knight because doing so would allow black to pin the queen to the king) White's rook seems strong at first glance but black's pieces are all nicely defended so I'm not sure it's actually doing much.
