Employees applied to get some of their bonuses early, and the company threatened to fire them over it. Everybody's hurting right now, and as the post states, it's a common practice in the game industry to underpay workers during the development of a game. These people probably don't have a lot of cash to fall back on, and a precedent had been set with Neil Druckmann and other employees receiving a portion of their promised bonus - only for lower staff to be threatened with termination for asking for that same courtesy. | Topic | Orcs are trending on twitter Are Orcs in fantasy literature racist caricature? |
| MrMallard 04/28/20 11:40:28 PM #150 | Has anyone mentioned that racial coding can be a subconscious process, taking biases and common beliefs of the time and transferring them into character designs unintentionally? No one's arguing that Tolkien was sitting at his desk, wringing his hands over racial caricatures and cackling with delight over the prospect of slipping them into his fantasy races as a way to undermine real world racial groups. It was most likely a subconscious process that was influenced by media he grew up consuming, with racially coded villains of those stories influencing how he designed his characters. I mean, one of the Great English Novels for about 2 centuries was Robinson Crusoe, which is mired in colonialism - he meets a native man and calls him Friday, and teaches him the "civilised" British way. A whole slew of "adventure" stories grew out of that, focusing on white people "taming the wild" and combatting "savagery" - this is media that was actively celebrated for centuries, and Tolkien would have grown up in a time where media like this was a big thing. It's not out of the question for him to have internalised some of that if he was exposed to media like that, which considering the time period in which he grew up, he likely was. The thing about criticising media is that if the material is good, it will hold up. Commenting on how characters are potentially coded to reflect an attitude or bias, consciously or unconsciously, isn't a sledge against the work unless those biases grow to define the work. You have critics like Lindsey Ellis who enjoy Lord of the Rings a great deal, but who talk critically about coding in stories including LotR. It's a valid line of criticism, though I think the core of the story is strong enough for a lot of people to take the potential coding of races like the dwarves and the orcs into account while still enjoying the overall journey and atmosphere of the story. While it's not the same process, I think of it in a familiar context - personally, I like classic Looney Tunes. There are quick racist gags in a lot of those older Looney Tunes, including in some of my favorite shorts ever, and while it's unfortunate that those objective biases exist in these cartoons, it's an aspect I address critically while enjoying the artistry of the cartoon as a whole. But there are Looney Tunes shorts that have racism so deeply interwoven into them that they just don't hold up. You have your wartime cartoons, where Japanese people are depicted with some of the grossest stereotypes of the time, but you also have shorts like the one where Bugs Bunny is being chased by one of the grossest caricatures of a black person in western media. They could have replaced this caricature with Elmer Fudd, and this cartoon would have been fine. But the depiction of this caricature is genuinely so awful, and the humor surrounding this caricature is so unfunny to begin with - relying on audiences laughing at him because he's black, not because he's funny - that the entire short is completely wasted. It's a racist piece of shit, and it belongs in the trash. The discourse surrounding Lord of the Rings isn't that it was a secret minstrel show, or one of the biggest antisemitic screeds since Mein Kampf. It's looking at these character types through a critical framework and discussing how aspects of their design may be rooted in regressive racial characteristics. People are influenced by conscious and unconscious bias, and a man in the 1940's likely had a lot of unconscious bias against certain races due to either aspects of other races being demonized/mocked in popular media, or due to media we consider to be extremely regressive being pretty commonplace at the time. That sort of shit, regardless of one's egalitarian leanings, soaks in sometimes. These aspects likely slipped into Tolkien's work without him actively thinking about real-world race when creating these fantasy races, and while his stories are beloved classics to this day and not outwardly racist like a lot of classic literature is, it's worth commenting on the characteristics that define his villified races and how they tie into depictions of other races. Racial coding, consciously or unconsciously, happens in media - it's whether the content of that media holds up to greater scrutiny that defines its greatness. For the most part among critics, Lord of the Rings seems to hold up. --- So you don't get to be a saint, martyrs never last this long Now Playing: Skyrim, Final Fantasy X-2 |

| MrMallard 04/28/20 9:55:20 AM #14 | From the looks of the videos, the oldest one was in it for kicks. It looks like he worked with his father more often than not, to the point of holding the cell phone when his dad needed to get involved with the video, and you can see in that first video that whenever somebody's room needed to get trashed, it was usually the oldest son who would do it. I think the situation that they were put in was extremely fucked up, and being the oldest and strongest child of this family, siding with your dad in this situation where you can be praised and have a lower chance of being hurt is probably the better choice to make. I think this guy is almost certainly a bully like his dad, just from what you can see in the videos, but considering the atmosphere of that environment it's hard not to see why someone would fall into that role. In short - while it would be interesting to get a perspective from inside the house, the only people who are currently cognizant enough to discuss the events of this YouTube channel at the moment are an abusive dad, a mother who actively went along with the dad's schemes and told one of her kids that she didn't like him, and an older brother who worked with his dad to create hostile situations to film. You see him getting his siblings into headlocks, to the point where these kids are audibly choking, and you see him take clothes and toys and strew them around his sibling's rooms so his dad can record himself yelling at the siblings over it. I don't know if this guy's word would be trustworthy. --- So you don't get to be a saint, martyrs never last this long Now Playing: Skyrim, Final Fantasy X-2 |

If I had more resources I'd give examples, but some of her deliveries don't quite take. They're not flat, but she feels too passive. If she went around screaming all her lines, got used to that energy, then toned it down - she'd hit the mark. She can be a bit one-note, sure. I feel like it was a problem with series 11, but she's had a bit more to work with in series 12 and I think she's been better. Honestly, chemistry is a bit of an issue with the TARDIS team. I think Jodie and Mandip play off each other well, but it's in the sense that since the text is a bit lacking, I'm looking more into subtext and body language. I've subsequently gone into shipping these two characters, but that's neither here nor there. I think the last companion I really liked was Clara, but only when she was with the Eleventh Doctor. I thought they had a really interesting progression, and I think they got along like a house on fire in a way that was really entertaining to watch. It's her interactions with 12 that kinda soured me towards her. I agree with you about the lighting. I think the issue is with filming in HD, and/or filming digitally. Lighting methods had to change along with the format, shows today have to be filmed in a more brightly lit environment I think. That's really impacted the look of TV shows, even the cheaper low-end shows that used to film on video. I really like RTD's era because on top of the stories feeling kind of contemporary for the time, the look of the episodes are set in the format of the time. You can tell right off the bat in Matt Smith's first episode that something is different, because the picture quality and framerate of the episode is way different. I think it shows way more in series 1 that they recorded on video, whereas for all I know series 2-4 recorded on film or another format before series 5 went HD. I think a consequence of this is that shows today look a lot more saturated, including Doctor Who. Look at Riverdale, Cheryl Blossom in particular - her red hair and cherry red lipstick pop whenever she's on screen. --- So you don't get to be a saint, martyrs never last this long Now Playing: Skyrim, Final Fantasy X-2 |

We're talking comments like "you should torment Cody more, he deserves it" and "Cody's screaming is like music to my ears". There was also a Facebook group that got forcibly shut down, followed by an invite-only group. A lot of the stuff with Cody is particularly shitty, and as the focal point of these videos he gets a lot of screentime. Considering the disproportionate focus on him in the videos themselves, that's understandable. But I think the part that really made it all real for me is that clip of Emma getting blasted with a super soaker and crying over her drawings getting ruined. The fact that this evil oaf of a dad instructed Cody to do this for a video, only to start yelling at him like he had no control over what just happened - "disciplining bad behavior", despite actively encouraging it seconds earlier - is the point where his malice really makes itself known. And it's fucking heartbreaking hearing this little girl break down crying over her drawings, saying that she just wanted to do something nice and fun for once and that now it's been ruined. Chibnall's run has unfortunately been spotty, but I'm still so glad that Moffat isn't behind the wheel any more. He had his high points, but I cannot stand his run on the show. --- So you don't get to be a saint, martyrs never last this long Now Playing: Skyrim, Final Fantasy X-2 |
| Topic | On the topic of horrific YouTube content creators - remember DaddyOFive? |
| MrMallard 04/27/20 3:28:07 PM #1 | https://youtu.be/QOVrrL5KtsM https://youtu.be/O3_8rc271GI https://youtu.be/oPcQ0rjejyU Warning: by virtue of using the original videos, these videos contain examples of child abuse. This trilogy of videos goes over the entire saga. The host is playing a character, but there's footage and there are receipts. I thought with the recent talk about the Asian woman who eats animals alive, I'd bring back another heinous YouTube channel who got away with cruelty. DaddyOFive was a "family" channel where a dad would "prank" his kids and turn them against each other. It became clear that he was encouraging an atmosphere of fear and violence for the sake of drama, and he would often target his youngest adopted son Cody. Cody started to display lingering signs of abuse, like bloody lips and bruises, and in multiple videos where he was tormented for the amusement of his father and exploited for YouTube views, he hits his head with an audible thunk sound. All of this is showcased in the linked videos. He also pulls an adoption prank on him three times, to a kid who's already been adopted at least once. Basically, if you were abused as a kid or otherwise have really unpleasant childhood memories, this might be a tough watch. There was shit from my childhood I had completely forgotten about, and watching these videos brought back a lot of the negativity and fear I felt as a kid that had long since been buried. Remember - channels like the live animal girl and this child abuser have cultivated a fanbase on YouTube and stayed undercover for months/years. The larger YouTube gets, and the more automated their systems become, more and more channels like this will slip through the cracks. Channels showcasing incredible cruelty to children and animals have existed on YouTube before, and going forward, it is all the more likely that this same content will continue to appear on the platform. YouTube is fucking horrifying. --- So you don't get to be a saint, martyrs never last this long Now Playing: Skyrim, Final Fantasy X-2 |

| MrMallard 04/27/20 11:48:24 AM #33 | TC looks like Jay Bauman in that second pic. My corona beard is going poorly. I have a bald spot on my chin, and the hair that does grow is really weedy and unkempt, so that's never going to happen. My moustache also has a ton of blond hairs in it, so it's very thin and seedy-looking. Honestly, I kinda like how I look now. There's a lot of caveats, but there's no other time more appropriate to grow this shit out and give it a try. --- So you don't get to be a saint, martyrs never last this long Now Playing: Skyrim, Final Fantasy X-2 |

Personally, I really like her performance. I really like her energy, and I like that most of her screentime isn't just her gobbing off about how she's the smartest person alive - I think her character exemplifies a love of learning, and one of her favorite things is to put 2 and 2 into someone else's hands and help them along until they can make 4 with it. I would take that any day of the week over another tired "yes, yes, it's bigger on the outside, I know" eyeroll from one of the Moffat Doctors. Saying that, the show really isn't in peak condition. The worst episodes are Chibnall ones more often than not, and while the good episodes are really good - Demons of the Punjab and Fugitive of the Judoon say hi - the bad ones are some of the worst episodes of the revival - Orphan 55 and Arachnids in the UK say hi. The show also has an overcrowding issue, with three supporting characters on board the TARDIS - Yaz is criminally underwritten for most of series 11, Ryan gets pushed further and further out of relevancy with every episode, and Graham's reduced to a quip machine half the time. I think Yaz is my favorite because she has the most potential, and most of the time she's paired up with the Doctor and I really vibe with their energy - Graham is good, but a lot of his time is tied to Ryan and I just don't dig how they play off of each other. I think this issue could have been rectified if the TARDIS crew were allowed to wander off on their own more often. I was rewatching The Empty Child the other day, and the Doctor and Rose have their own separate plots - The Doctor gets to the bottom of the gas mask children, and Rose stumbles into Captain Jack Harkness. Most of the time, the current TARDIS crew don't have a lot to do - it's basically following the Doctor and doing what she needs. There's limited branching, but there's a lot less of each character having an individual plot or an episode focused on what they get up to - Demons of the Punjab being a notable exception, being a more Yaz-centric episode. Current Who isn't the best it's ever been, but I think Jodie Whittaker is a fantastic Doctor. The best thing about this show, consistently, is her performance. Everything else is a bit rocky, but I really like her Doctor. --- So you don't get to be a saint, martyrs never last this long Now Playing: Skyrim, Final Fantasy X-2 |
