That's not an impossibility, and from the few news articles I caught while getting figures, things are pretty bad in India right now. Things are bad pretty much everywhere, even if they're doing better than other countries.

With that being said, if shit well and truly hits the fan in India, I think we're going to hear about it. Under-reporting is a possibility at the moment, but I don't think things are as ass-backwards in India right now as to suggest that these figures are simply the tip of the iceberg.

I focused on the reported Coronavirus figures. This response was to address that certain percentages were gonna be different due to varying populations. That's one reason why I included India - by all accounts there should be more Coronavirus infections and deaths if we're taking population into account, yet even at the worst estimates at the moment, they're doing better than America. This is despite having over 4x the amount of people that America has.

We can sit here and talk about how it impacts population numbers, but the fact remains that even among countries with similarly sized populations which began reporting cases of COVID-19 at around the same time as the US, the rate of infection and death is consistently lower in those other countries than it is in the United States.

as an Indonesian, let me tell you that we don't really believe in those statistics.
for example, those who died while they're suspected to be infected with corona but never has the chance to be tested positive will not be counted as corona-relatef death.
there's also the thing were we tend to let ourself sick until it's severe case before we finally go to the hospital because the high cost (nowhere as bad as US, but we have like 10% of American's income so it's still damn expensive) and that leads to underreported cases.

I would assume that they entertained the idea of quarantine as soon as news started leaking out of China - being situated closer to China geographically - and they cracked down on international travel and on health screenings to stem the spread of the disease.

Funnily enough, things got as bad as they did in the UK because the government didn't take it seriously to begin with. Remember how Boris Johnson got COVID-19? That's because he shook the hand of a man who had been in contact with coronavirus victims, knowing that this was the case. He was so keen to downplay the seriousness of the disease that he contracted it.

Another difference - when the disease first flared up, the government went from 0 to 100. As soon as shit started to get fucked up, the call went out for everyone in the UK to remain housebound for the foreseeable future.

Phase 4 in the UK happened at the start of March.

Donald Trump was telling the media "if only 100k die, I'll have done a very good job" on the 29th of March, after receiving massive backlash for telling the nation that America would be open by Easter.

Even after taking such drastic action, the UK has suffered 32,000 deaths. Only in the last two weeks has the curve flattened in the UK, and their restrictions are still in place. The US is about to re-open despite hundreds of people still dying every day, and after numerous spikes.

The current number of confirmed Coronavirus cases worldwide is roughly 4,200,000.

The amount of confirmed Coronavirus cases in the US alone is roughly 1,390,000. That's almost a third of all Coronavirus cases in the world.

The next worst country, Spain, has had roughly 230,000 infections. That's a sixth of what the USA has had so far.

America has over 80,000 Coronavirus casualties. The next worst country, the UK, has had just over 32,000 deaths. The US has over twice the mount of COVID-19 deaths as the next worst country.

It could be argued that the US has a larger population than most other countries, so it's only natural that more people would get sick. And considering that the next best example would be China, which is both the epicenter of this virus and the first place on Earth to be devastated by this, it would be natural to stack the numbers of China up against the US and see how they fared in comparison. I, personally, don't trust China's government - they're not reporting deaths as openly as other countries, and with the characteristic privacy and wanton dishonesty of the Chinese government, I don't feel comfortable taking Chinese figures into account.

I will, however, take the next best option - India, which has the 2nd largest population in the world.

I originally included Indonesia, but post #8 is from an Indonesian user saying that the figures aren't widely believed over there. Editing for posterity.

India, with a population of 1.35 billion, is reporting roughly 71,000 cases of Coronavirus. Of those 71,000 reported cases, just over 2,300 people have died.

A country with over 4 times the population of America, reporting an infection rate that's 20x less than the USA. And what's more, the reported death rate is more than 30x lower than that of the US.

For the love of fuck, make like the rest of the world and stay inside instead of licking doorknobs and gathering in large groups outside to protest about not being able to get a haircut. We get it, you're proud to be American, with liberty and freedom to lick doorknobs at your discretion. But you are the worst country in the entire goddamn world in regards to Coronavirus, beating the next worst countries by over double the death rate and over six times the infection rate. Literally everyone else on Earth is doing their part to wipe this disease out, but you've got a bunch of stupid fucking hicks congregating to "protest the lockdown", to the point of having a group of people marching into a government building with rifles strapped to their backs.

Stay the fuck inside, unless you need essential supplies. Sanitise, wear PPE, and avoid any superfluous contact with any other human being. The feeling is mutual - we've had a nice rapport over the years and been friendly through Discord as well as CE, and out of everyone on CE I think you're the person I've gotten along with the best. I also want to give a shout-out to @butthole666 - name's not coming up so he's either warned or suspended. Dude has my favorite name on CE, and his personal topics are interesting. At an absolute baseline - like all the CEople I like - he's not a raging asshole, and he makes down-to-earth level-headed topics that invite users to post in a down-to-earth and level-headed manner. That's not to say that he doesn't act like a CEman at other times, but the topics he makes where the subject matter is a bit more on the serious side or more reflective than anything are great places to get to know him and have a yarn, and it's that sort of casual, friendly vulnerability that a lot of CEople seem to avoid. For butthole666 - which is, again, my favorite name on CE - that vulnerability has made him one of the people I feel the most comfortable talking to and about in a serious sort of tone.

And also I want to shout out @WWEPropaganda - another name that's not showing up, so that's worrying - because CE doesn't have as many earnest and genuine gimmick accounts as it should. All of the subversive, non-serious accounts just peddle Trump dogshit in terms that only just save them from being moderated - everyone seems to have forgotten how to play an entertaining character. WWEPropaganda is a relic in that sense - dedicated to providing detailed write-ups of prominent wrestling events to tie into news topics, revealing at the end that the wrestling event has a historical lesson that the news story could learn from. It's always a pleasant surprise to see a post from WWEPropaganda, and he continues a legacy of shitposting that's been forgotten in favor of making people as ass blasted as possible.

Hundreds of people are still dying a day in the US. Open non-essential businesses or what have you, but malls, cinemas, stadiums, concert halls etc. - anywhere where you're shoulder to shoulder with dozens of other people for hours on end - should absolutely stay closed for the time being.

Australia's been lucky enough to have like 100 deaths in total, over the course of months. We're opening stuff up in waves - restaurants and cafes are opening soon, then I think cinemas and stuff etc. And we still don't have plans to open the pubs back up. Meanwhile the US is rapidly approaching 100,000 deaths in total and it shows no sign of slowing down, and y'all want to start opening malls and shit.

The lockdown order is lifting, but there's still a heightened chance of transmission in your neck of the woods compared to everywhere else in the world - and letting people flood into malls and shit is just asking for more people to get sick and flare the coronavirus up again. So yeah, it is too soon, and people are right to be bothered by it.

I think the most contentious answer I gave was in regards as to whether a minority race should be depicted as speaking poor English on TV. Like obv. it's shitty for a show like MASH, where all the Asian characters are portrayed with less depth and humanity than even the inconsequential one-off white side characters, and where their improper grasp of English is portrayed constantly as a source of humor. It's especially egregious when you take into account that the show would cast whatever Asian American actors they could, whether they were Korean or not.

If there's a single, defining depiction of another race on a TV show, where they're depicted as not understanding English well and/or falling into reductive stereotypes, then that's shitty representation. But I don't think it's impossible to depict a character who struggles with English, but who is portrayed respectfully. There's MASH representation, where Asian characters are made the butt of the joke whenever they appear because they don't have a great grasp on English - despite the show taking place in the native country of these characters, where English is not the common language - and then there's something like Modern Family which - while stereotypical in its portrayal of multiple groups of people, and not necessarily the champion of representing different minority groups and the like - makes the effort to portray a character like Gloria as someone who is intelligent, but who is discriminated against for her accent and because she has to translate from Spanish to English on the fly, which people attribute to stupidity or vapidity due to her race, her marriage to an old white man which carries its own negative stereotypes, and her conventional beauty (which feeds into the previous point).

I don't think Modern Family is the best example of representation on TV necessarily, but that moment with Gloria where she addresses the prejudice she faces stands out as a moment that actively commented on the depiction of Latin Americans on television, and made a case for a character who - while not depicted as having a bad grip on the English language per se - wasn't depicted as a native English speaker, and commented on the potential difficulties of a non-native English speaker living in an environment where English is the expected "default" language. In that sense, given that there's time given to represent these aspects and that there's robust representation of different minority groups in a piece of media, it's not necessarily wrong to depict characters of a certain race as not speaking the best English.

But that's missing the point of the question, which is whether you think it's perfectly acceptable for different races to be depicted as speaking poor English in TV shows. By consistently "othering" non-white races, like by portraying them as being bad at speaking English, that breeds bias and stereotypes towards them. I don't think I took that into account when selecting this answer.

That's the one that stuck out the most to me, anyway. I talk a mean game, but this score tells me that there's probably some racial bias that I'm not addressing, and that I should be more mindful going forward.

On another level, given that it's proven that he's engaged in grooming-type activities with someone assumed to be under the legal age limit - after previously being lured into a sting operation where he was under the impression that he would be having sex with an underage person - I have no sympathy for him. Like, at worst, SwSh falls back into standard Pokemon trappings and cliches. The issue is that there's not a whole lot that rises above it.

If you're gonna get one of the games, I recommend waiting for a price drop or a cheap sale copy. Like, I defend Final Fantasy XIII on an aesthetic level and because the story is serviceable enough if you're willing to lower your expectations - but that's only because I bought it for $10. It's a fine enough game, but don't go spending upwards of $80 on it.

They're fine enough for $40 or so, but you're not getting an experience that'll capture your whimsy like Crystal or Emerald. I think the review bombing and the really bad bitching about it is way too far, and stuff about this game like the culmination of the main story with the legendaries and the music is really good, but I think I paid too much money for it and I didn't enjoy it as completely and on as many levels as I enjoyed Emerald and Crystal back in the day.

Keep in mind that in both games, I didn't even enjoy the Battle Tower/Frontier. I just enjoyed the campaigns. SwSh fell short from my favorite Pokemon games, and I honestly could have Shield alone and gone on with my life to little or no consequence.

Granted, that's coming from a 24 year old talking about a game that failed to compare to childhood defining games - there's going to be inherent bias in that judgement. But that's how I felt. It was a solid enough game, but don't expect something that'll capture your attention like the game/s you grew up with.
