ElatedVenusaur 03/30/20 1:05:31 PM #47 | ZeroX91 posted... Fiction existed then too don't wrap your self up in a tizzy over a library burning not like they had documents showing how to fly the pyramids or how to turn on the perpetual energy generator at StonehengeAlso, it's worth mentioning the available evidence suggests the library was aggressive and went to any lengths necessary to acquire materials. It would also hire gangs to "collect" past dues and you had to be wealthy or a member of the aristocracy to access it. It wasn't at all like a modern public library. It came to be associated with the decadent, increasingly failing and hated Roman elite, and that had way more to do with it being burned than some tired take about Christians hating knowledge. Also, there were other, similar libraries, like the Great Library of Baghdad(it got Mongoled) that people should also acknowledge. It still sucks that a literal treasure trove of knowledge went up in flames, of course. |

ElatedVenusaur 03/29/20 7:11:48 PM #225 | Anteaterking posted... Neither of them had any hope of winning. They didn't even look like they'd be getting any delegates on or after Super Tuesday besides Minnesota and Indiana.Actually, Bernie would probably win Super Tuesday if not for the carefully-coordinated endorsements of three other candidates and massive media promotion of Biden. Just his victory in South Carolina wasn't enough to pick up Texas, Klob just dropping out wouldn't be enough to flip Minnesota, etc. it was all of it happening within the 2 days between South Carolina and Super Tuesday that made it happen. It was too much too fast for Bernie to even begin to respond or react to. There simply isn't a universe where all that happens and Bernie wins, unfortunately. The media and the Democratic establishment was not and would never be interested in what Bernie was selling, and if you're telling me moderating would have worked, well, the only available evidence for what that looks like is Sen. Warren, who placed 3rd in her home state. |
Topic | The Dems savior will appear in 2024. |
ElatedVenusaur 03/29/20 7:05:02 PM #8 | No, AOC won't run for president that soon. She'll probably run for Senator, Governor, or even Mayor before that. Many of the front-runners from this primary likely won't be running, either. Biden's brain is already mush, and Bernie would truly be too old to start things. Warren would also be really old by then, and has, in any case, managed to alienate a large chunk of progressives without winning over many moderates. Of the 2020 candidates, only figures like Klob and Buttigieg may have a case to go again. Depending on how he does with COVID-19, you could see Inslee try again as well. |

ElatedVenusaur 03/29/20 12:48:58 PM #89 | K181 posted... Man, Sanders must be a really bad candidate to lose to two straight low-enthusiasm opponents.I mean, we could analyze his faults, but the most relevant thing that happened was that James Clyburn endorsed Biden, which increased his margin of victory in South Carolina by as much as 25% and instigated the Democratic establishment to form an anti-Bernie bloc around Biden which successfully put him over the top on Super Tuesday. Also, whereas Republican primary voters generally vote for what they want regardless of how extreme what they want is(or even how much establishment Republicans or even Trump tell them they shouldn't), Democratic primary voters(especially older ones) tend to vote for the candidate they think others will vote for, often even if they would prefer another candidate, and they obviously trust the judgment of the media and the Democratic establishment. |

Many of the cases diagnosed in the last couple of weeks are likely infections that occurred before social distancing. So we should start to get an idea of how effective our measures have been. Hopefully, the rate of new cases will start to slow. If not, we're in really big trouble. Of course, if we're able to ramp up testing the numbers might increase rapidly regardless.Yeah, our biggest problem is the lack of capability to test. South Korea prioritized the production of test kits back in January(they had their first confirmed case the same day we did: January 27th), and they were able to ramp up production fast enough to catch and trace case clusters and effectively isolate them, mitigating spread while ensuring their public health infrastructure was as prepared as possible for the carnage. They've managed to slow the spread and significantly mitigate the number of fatalities. Really, in the coming week, we're going to find out a lot. How bad are things going to get down South? Can Michigan get a handle on the cluster in Detroit, or is it already too late? Can NYC cope, or will those hardest-hit hospitals have to resort to triage like the ones in Lombardy? How long will the problem keep Trump's attention, and will he ever actually act? |

Of course, they also took the harshest measures and arent afraid to throw their weight around, so they probably did better than Italy(and us) on a per capita basis. Topic | What's stopping the military from taking usurping Trump? |
ElatedVenusaur 03/26/20 2:03:35 PM #15 | There's centuries of institutional memory working against that: the U.S. military, for all of its faults, has no record of challenging or voiding the results of elections. That's for starters: there's also the fact that Trump, while unpopular, isn't all *that* unpopular, and there is unlikely to be any support; popular, institutional, or foreign, for Trump's extra-legal removal. Lastly, the top brass tends to skew conservative and around half of the actual troops do too, so good luck with that. |

ElatedVenusaur 03/25/20 11:59:54 PM #23 | I didn't mind the look, I minded that the Joker does very little aside from trying to break Harley Quinn out. The tone of his character is a bit all over the place, and, at the end of the day, he just feels like he's there because they wanted to shoehorn the Joker in, or perhaps because he is an artifact of a different film. He doesn't belong in the Suicide Squad film and ultimately adds nothing. But, then, that's the first Suicide Squad film in a nutshell: it has no idea what it wants to be and just threw in a ton of ideas and characters without really developing any of them. I did genuinely laugh when his helicopter gets shot down and he just growls, "This bird is cooked." Like, you know, a helicopter crash would freak most of us out, but it's just a minor inconvenience for the Joker. |

This just tells me that cities are hellscapes and there are some very bad outcomes to cramming people into apartment buildings like sardinesFatality rate will likely be higher in rural areas(once it gets out there), since getting access to medical care is much harder and rural hospitals are basically always understaffed, underequipped, and generally struggling just to stay open. Also rural people skew older. What people in this topic can't seem to grasp, for some reason, is that these are deaths in addition to normal deaths. Failing to contain the virus' spread would cause cases(and fatalities) to sky-rocket. So far, no U.S. hospital has had to resort to triage, and that's very good!
