I usually don't downshift, since brakes are cheaper than a clutch. I'll just let it rev down on its own in whatever gear, brake as necessary and clutch in when engine speed gets too low

Good, honest mechanics usually spread by word of mouth. Ask your friends or family who they use. Some chain places are alright, but they're very impersonal. If you can find a shop that's smaller and friendly, they'll usually take care of you.

A local Jiffy Lube called this morning asking to order a cabin air filter, the one that cleans the air for your A/C. These filters are recommended to be replaced every 20k miles or so per Ford, but you can usually stretch them quite a bit past that. He gives me the VIN information, and I look it up, and I'm surprised that we don't have it (since we keep dozens of these filters for every vehicle on hand). Then I double check what the vehicle is...

It's a brand new 2020 Explorer. VIN says it rolled off the production line on December 2nd of 2019. Even if we assume that it was bought the day it was made and didn't sit on a dealer's lot for a couple months before sale, there's no way there's anything wrong with that filter. The interior probably still smells like new car smell.

I wonder what trick they pulled. Probably showed off a random dirty filter and tried to pass it off as the customer's. Either way, it's shameful shit.

Wealth is not a fixed pie, I am absolutely sick of left-wing populists (and by extension, the Alt-Right) that have zero understanding on how the concept of wealth creation works going on with their economic illiteracy. You do not lift people out of poverty by chastising and threatening to bleed the very people that make it possible for billions to have a job, to have new fancy technology that would have been considered a luxury decades ago that include the likes of natural gas energy sources, to have seemingly any item in the world delivered to your doorstep in 1-2 days. Regressive policies that are intended to bleed the most wealthy also have the consequences of hurting those in lower income brackets and those who are small business owners.

I've trained myself to ask something like "May I?" before hopping on a computer that isn't mine to fix something. Just makes it easier. For family and close friends, I usually don't even have to ask and just jump on it when they tell me what's wrong.

You weren't in the wrong from context and body language so you're not at fault, but asking "May I?" is a good habit to prevent these sort of things from escalating. It's just good insurance in case anyone inquires if you asked for permission. Purely CYA.
