Universe Dream Land Pac-Man Universe --- Nasuverse: I know exactly two things about this setting. The first is that King Arthur is a girl, and all mythological characters show up and have very specific power rankings or whatever, and silly names like Assassin. The most important event Nasuverse ever had in my life was when I had a 72 year-old professor who wanted to tell us about Gilgamesh, and brought up a fan art picture of the ****ing FATE version of him whipping around some spears, and it took all I had not to laugh. The second thing I know about Nasuverse is Arcueid ruining every fictional character power debate. I despise I was only using 10% of my true power characters, the only time its ever worked for me was in The Princess Bride. Im sorry, this series is everything I dislike. The most I ever enjoyed it was when I saw a bit of fan art like ten years ago of King Arthur looking angrily at Saber from across a table. ChalkZone: I saw like one episode of this forever ago, I was just a little too old for it when it first came out. The premise is fascinating: a kid can travel to the magical ChalkZone, where everything thats ever been drawn in chalk and then erased appears. The world itself looks like a chalkboard where things are drawn out of chalk, of course. Fantastic idea for a setting, which explains why this series has so much fan art even though it left no impression on wider pop culture. Too bad ChalkZone must be slowly dying, since schools have basically abandoned chalkboards in favor of whiteboards or smartboards. Journey to the West Universe: This may sound weird, but its hard to judge this one because it feels like its the default Chinese epic that all other Chinese stuff steals from? Reading a synopsis of what happens in it (I hesitate to use the word plot) looks like a blueprint for the few other Chinese things Ive seen. Although, I ranked Lord of the Rings, so maybe Im just a jerk. Anyway, Ill focus on the part that everyone remembers: the Monkey King. Its interesting how whenever a Western video game wants to rake in those Chinese bucks, they immediately mine the Monkey King for ideas. I dont know, this feels weird. Do non-Western works ever try to appeal to the West by including King Arthur? Because if so, I want to see that. Dune Universe: Foundation and Dune are basically the basis for most of the space opera genres deeper ideas. What can even be said about Dune? Theres a real verisimilitude here that doesnt exist in most other settings. There are a billion competing factions, completely insane uses of realish things (I can talk in such a precise way that normal people must obey me), explorations of what it means be the chosen one and peoples innate desire for a savior and inability to judge their worthiness for themselves, man, just so much is packed in here. Most important of all is the gay twink prostitutes with gas caps on their hearts so Baron Harkonnen can remove the cap and laugh evilly while they die, which is totally in the books and not something David Lynch invented out of whole cloth. Anyway, I hope the new Dune movies get to the fourth book (they wont) because thats the one where a guy turns into a giant worm with a human face. --- Not changing this sig until I decide to change this sig. From what I understand, if you keep missing and generally screwing up, your chances of a critical headshot rise, and you do more damage in general while taking less. On the flipside, if you're doing really well and nailing every shot it'll get a tad harder because you're doing less damage and taking more. That's interesting, I didn't know this game had it. Anagram 05/02/20 1:37:05 AM #233 | Wizarding World: Different writers have different strengths and different weaknesses. JK Rowlings greatest strength as a writer is that shes really good at coming up with weird, memorable ideas and characters. There are characters who barely show up in Harry Potter, but I remember them perfectly, and I only read the books once each, when they came out. There are little magical doodads that everyone remembers, too. Shes fantastic at coming up with this kind of thing and integrating it into the story well, like invisibility cloaks, enslaved elves who like their lot in life, different brands of flying broomsticks, and so on. Her weakness is logic. She has no ability whatsoever to determine how item A affects things outside of the narrow situation she designed it for. The Time Turner is the biggest offender for this, like, if the wizards can just make time travel devices and give them to children, how are there any issues? And dont say theres a limit on the Time Turner or whatever, because that horrible play confirms there isnt. Then there was another time when someone asked how old Dumbledore was when he died, she gave a number, people calculated the year of his birth, and she declared that they were wrong. Like, come on, here. My point is that although Hogwarts is this fantastic place full of amazing adventures that really get your imagination going, if you put 1% effort into thinking about anything, it all falls apart. Although, given what came after, maybe Im giving her too much credit. Invisible wizard poop is just where the problems with her start. I dont want to spoil Fantastic Beasts 2 in case someone out there wants to watch it, but it basically exposes Rowling as a horrible hack fraud who just got unbelievably lucky with Harry Potter. Jeez. Now that I think about it, is Harry Potter the last, like, HUGE book series that everyone lined up for and kept up with as they came out? Paradise Falls: Im gonna just admit it: Ive never seen Up. Up is the only Pixar movie Ive never seen that people care about (Ive also never seen any of the Cars movies or the one with the dinosaur). But I mean, just looking at this, its a jungle with a really tall cliff and a waterfall, and it really exists. Thats cool, I guess? Im assuming the appeal of Up is not the location itself. Gensokyo: I briefly read that as MegaTokyo and panicked. Then I realized what it actually was: that stupid setting that ruined every Most Powerful Fictional Character contest I ran back in the day. Control over boundaries, my ass. Anyway, this is a fantasy version of feudal Japan, but with little girls who have functionally omnipotent powers and silly hats. I approve of the hats, but nothing else. I mean, okay, I dont mind mystical feudal Japan, with magical lakes, kappa, and all of that, but the selling point of this universe is lolis with hats, and thats not my jam. --- Not changing this sig until I decide to change this sig. Universe Dream Land Pac-Man Universe --- Doom Universe: For me, the defining Doom moment will always be when I was like nine or ten, went to Frys with my mom, and there was a station to play the latest Doom at. I dont even know what game it was. I sucked really hard, and an employee smiled at me and showed me how to cheat by opening up some command console or something (I dont remember the exact details) and giving myself infinite ammo. As for the setting itself? Ironic stupidity is really the only way it could have gone. Its just Theres a portal to Hell on Mars, a marine kills everything, hes so badass the demons are scared of him. Being stupid on purpose was the only thing you could have really done with that, so I respect that. Netherworlds: When I was in high school and I mentioned liking FFT, my friend spent months trying to get me to play Disgaea. I never did. Demons and the dead people inhabit Hell, youre a demon prince trying to conquer everything, and two lolis follow you around, I guess. I dont mind everything being silly and dumb, but this is just not my bag, sorry. Warhammer Fantasy: I never heard of Warhammer as a kid. When I was like 19, I discovered Warhammer 40K on Wikipedia, and I spent hours consuming all of the lore I could find. I was really interested by it because that was the height of my Star Trek mania, and this was like discovering a whole new thing, because it was. Then I discovered Warhammer Fantasy, and its pretty good. Its better than any official D&D setting, Ill at least give it that. Whoever made it said Lets take all of the Lord of the Rings stuff, but make it a bit more grimdark, add vampires and mummies for some reason, and add some comical stuff like Cockney orcs. I like a lot of the details, like elves and dwarves hating each other because of the War of the Beard, where elves shaved off a dwarfs beard and it triggered a disastrous war that ruined both of their empires, or dwarves who dedicate themselves to dying in combat and go around fighting the strongest monsters, or a near-mythical god-king in the distant past of humanity who founded the Empire (seriously, stop naming things the Empire or the Federation). What I dont like is the world map. I hate world maps that are just Earth, but a little different. I at least appreciate the main setting being not!Germany instead of not!England, I guess. Overall, Id say this is a more solid setting than most people give it credit for, and its a shame that its overshadowed so much by 40K. BattleTech Universe: Ive never played BattleMech, but I did spend some time reading its Wikipedia and TVTropes articles a while ago. I do like space stuff, and I appreciate the level of trying to justify this the setting goes through. I like the idea of a big space empire splitting apart, some of the military leaving to unknown space, and then coming back to find the remnants fighting, and the remnants have bigger forces, but the old military has the height of technology from the old empire, and has developed a crazy warrior code that actually makes it harder to fight. I dont buy that stupid warrior guys can build crazy advanced space stuff, but Ill allow this under the Klingon Exception. Overall: pretty good. El Nido Archipelago: In terms of series with only two games, Chrono definitely has the biggest divide between them in quality. I dont even really want to talk about this, I just want to complain about Chrono Cross. Look, heres the thing. Theres a species of Japanese writer thats obsessed with convoluted nonsense. They tend to love weird DNA stuff, time travel, nonsensical references to Christianity, and alternate dimensions. The most famous member of this species is Tetsuya Nomura, but there are others. Like, Chrono Cross. Couldve just been a game about time travel. No! Theres a supercomputer named FATE that causes the planet to be counterbalanced by an alternate dimension and fifteen-thousand years of time travel that causes islands to be terraformed in a small sea that forms the setting of the game and its like you have completely lost me. Yautja Prime: Alright, Im just going to say it. I like the RedLetterMedia version of Predator better, where the Predators are just rich aliens on hunting vacations who wear monster masks to screw with humans. Predator 1 is the only good one. The last one, The Predator, is unbearably awful. I could talk for like 3000 words about all the things wrong in it, but the main one is lore. No one cares about Predator lore. The less you know, the more interesting they are. So being asked about the Predator homeworld is like being asked to ruin something interesting. Fine. Its a lava-ish hot planet with generic sci-fi cities. There you go. --- Not changing this sig until I decide to change this sig. Started: July 6, 2005 |

Every time I think I know them all, I learn about another. Id heard the name Killer Instinct before, but Id never seen the games in action. I like how theres an evil corporation just named UltraTech. Whats the most pointless evil corporation in vidoh hell we all know its Umbrella. There are humans, mutants created to test their strength, and a demon whose head is split in two, because why not? Alright, look, this looks like a low-rent version of Mortal Kombat. I appreciate the DKC-esque graphics, thats very interesting for a SNES title, but as an actual universe in itself, eh? Land of Ooo: Sorry, I plan to watch Adventure Time at some point, cant read about for fear of spoilers. Jefferson Island: The most interesting thing about MadWorld is it being in black-and-white to get around Wii limitations. Its one of those games thats like 2% more memorable than the random dreck no one ever thinks about, so it occasionally comes up. Alright, so this island is where people compete in a gladiatorial game, and its probably in Nevada. Look, okay, look. Same thing with Killer Instinct. It has a sort of neat visual style, but the world itself is nothing special. Earth Bet: An alternate universe with superheroes, where the superhero culture has a million unwritten rules and bizarre politics. Interesting concept, but Im not a big enough superhero fan to read it, sorry! Evil Biff Future: I watched Back to the Future dozens of times as a kid. Im not joking, I broke the VCR by getting BttF2 stuck in it, I watched it that many times. It wasnt until I rewatched it when I was like 25 that I realized future Biff was Donald Trump. How many celebrities have been culturally relevant huge deals since 1985? Not many. Anyway, I love the super 80s of BttFs alternate timelines. The glitz, the ugly glamor, the evil Trump casino, all of it. Fun fact: they wanted Martys siblings to be in the evil future, but the sister was pregnant at the time, and they were like We cant include her being pregnant here or else Marty undoing this future effectively kills his nephew, but it would be weird to include his brother and not his sister, so they just cut both characters. --- Not changing this sig until I decide to change this sig. Like even Mad Max futures still have people fighting for them. I maintain that this is a stupid description. I like some of the clean iPod aesthetic the technology has, and I like the Mad Maxness Australia has going on for no reason, but the history of the world with the robot slaves and racism and all that makes zero sense. When the first trailer was released, people compared it to Pixar, but Overwatch is trying for more care about our worldness, I guess? Not a big fan, to be honest. Also, Moira really clashes with the rest of the game, I hate her. Persona Universe: Does anyone else think that they need a better name than Persona User? Just saying. So, its hard to really rank this because each game has a different aesthetic and explanation for the second universe, but overall, I think the idea of peoples unconscious ideas coming to life and the heroes only being able to deal with them by accepting something about themselves and tremendous trauma is genius. Persona 4 has the strongest method of gaining a persona, where you need to accept who you are, but the others are still solid. Im not a fan of the cute mascot characters, though. The second half is very good but it can't entirely cancel out how rough the first half is.Oh jesus, I just read that name in my head, it took this long to get the pun of his name. Ouch. Simon is interesting. He's definitely better than the ambassador from the first game. I don't think we needed him to turn obviously evil and waggle his tongue and laugh, though. Like, the situation presented was interesting enough: he wants revenge, the police are corrupt, what else can he do except manipulate the situation? Making him cacklingly evil does nothing except justify Edgeworth fighting him. It would have been more interesting if he'd been more like (I can't believe I'm saying this) Acro from the second game, and felt no particular hate toward anyone but still felt the need to avenge his (perceived) family member. I do like the idea of a mastermind manipulator, but, speaking of which, didn't he kill the body double in self-defense? Like it's clearly established that he went to the roof with no intention of killing anyone, the body double fired at him, and then he killed the guy, but everyone acts like he's going away forever. Universe Dream Land Pac-Man Universe --- Fables Universe: All the fairytale creatures and characters are real, they secretly live in New York City, theres a secret Adversary corrupting their realms, etc. Ever notice how its always New York or LA? If you wanted to have a secret community of monsters, wouldnt it be smarter to do it in like Boise or Denver? Somewhere that has all the amenities you need, but wont attract international attention? Or maybe even just have a small town all to yourselves thats off the beaten track. What Im saying is basically anywhere except New York City. Regardless, look. I dont care about fairytales at all. Like ten years ago, there was a grimdark fairytale genre of movie, and I saw them, and I wanted to kill myself. Fables predates that, but its the same basica idea. Far Far Away (Shrek): Im just going to say it, Im sorry if this offends anyone: Shrek ruined kids films. After Shrek, everything had to be ironic, and were still sort of in that situation. The only big kid movie since Shrek that doesnt have some kind of subversion of expectations is Tangled. Even Frozen has a scene where Elsa is like LOL YOU CANT MARRY A DUDE YOU JUST MET. I blame Shrek. It is 100% Shreks fault. Also, I dont like Puss in Boots. Underground (Undertale): After complaining about subversions of expectations in Fables and Far Far Away, heres where Im going to reveal myself as a giant hypocrite. I avoided playing Undertale for years because I thought it couldnt be that good, and then I finally played it, and it was absolutely that good. I generally dislike hate, silly atmospheres starring little kids thats so popular in indie games, and yet, here we are. Everything in this game is just masterfully designed to get you, including the setting, obviously. Anyone mind if I ask a stupid question? So, in Genocide, Undyne is like Alphys contacted Asgore and told him about you, hes totally gonna mess you up, then when you get to Asgore he doesnt know whats going on. What is the deal with that? Narnia: My only exposure to Narnia is the first of the movies that came out fourteen years ago? Ish? Anyway, I saw it with my sister, who doesnt watch movies and never watches fantasy. We got to the part where Santa Claus gives a little girl a knife and she was like what. Anyway, Narnia itself does not excite me. Sorry. I get the Jesus allegory, I get it all, Im just not that into it. Firefly Universe: I remember people used to rally around Firefly as an unfairly cancelled series, and its true. But Firefly is honestly, like, its fine. I dont think it had more than maybe two seasons in it anyway. Like, okay, its fine that the space empire is an evil bureaucracy that wants to control everyone because evil, I get that, and the heroes are losers at the margins. The Wild West aesthetics are at least more justified here, it does make some sense theyd have horses and stuff. One thing I always thought was weird was people hailing this as like visionary for showing a combined American-Chinese culture in the future, and Im like what? The characters say like two Mandarin words in the entire show, its just the Wild West in space. Like, look, maybe if the show had gone on for longer, we could have learned more about the Alliance or whatever, but it was always going to be a paint-by-numbers space empire. As for the Reavers, look. I accept cannibalistic space barbarians in something like Warhammer 40K, where nothing matters, but if youre trying for any amount of seriousness, then we have to ask questions like how people who cant even speak because theyre so angry can maintain spaceships. Also, I want to shout out to whoever I argued with thirteen years ago on Board 8 about this show, I dont know his name, but he was like oh this is the most realistic depiction of space ever, the only time theres sound in space is when they shoot through a nebula which technically constitutes an atmosphere for sound to move through and I was like dude come on no one thought of that. Spider-Verse: Im not quite sure how to rank this, since the setting is just Spidermans New York City, except a multiverse of them with many Spidermen. The city itself is just New York through a cool faux-comic lens, but the multiverse concept is also basically just what yo |

I'm not sure I've seen too many people say it's the best game in the franchise, just that it's miles ahead of AAI1 (which you definitely seem to agree with lol), and that it's nearly as good as the original trilogy. I definitely liked it a lot - it definitely had a way more coherent and interesting story than AAI1 with more interesting twists, I really liked how every case tied together and why, and it had a lot of fun characters. Raka_Putra posted... How did you like Simon?Everything being tied together was fine. At least they provided an explanation for it, which is good. I wasn't sure we were going to get one. As for Sebastian, if that's who you mean, he's also fine. A lot of the game is about his arc and redemption, but I wasn't feeling him as much as Edgeworth and Shields. Kay also seemed mostly pointless in this game, with the fourth case being the only one where she really matters. --- Not changing this sig until I decide to change this sig. Started: July 6, 2005 |

Universe Dream Land Pac-Man Universe --- Colombia: In 1893, the US government built a flying city, and then it declared independence. Even though it was built in the late 1800s, everything follows a 1700s aesthetic, and although its the 1800s, they still have semi-modern technology. Is there a word for that? That kind of telling the audience the year and then using clearly advanced technology like its no big deal thing that Hideo Kojima also does? Anyway, the leadership then decides that the United States has strayed from the Founding Fathers original vision, so they need to maintain it by being super theocratic, fascist, and racist. Well, okay, Im willing to accept that theyre super racist, but then why allow black people into their city at all? Just because they need workers? I feel like if you can build a flying city with all this advanced technology, you can probably find a way to make manual labor less necessary, Im just saying. Anyway, overall, solid premise. Farscape Universe: Oh, Farscape. Youre okay, I guess. Im something of an aficionado of space shows, and I can definitively state that 90% of them are pure, unwatchable garbage. Farscape isnt one of them, but its no Star Trek: TNG, either. Farscape feels like an attempt to do subversion of expectations before that was really a proper thing, and I generally dont like that kind of thing unless its masterfully executed, like something like Undertale. There are lots of weird things in Farscape that are fun and that I enjoy, but the overall world itself? Its kind of unpleasant, to be honest. The Badlands: Im willing to accept a post-apocalypse where evil noblemen have taken over the southwestern United States and each specialize in an industry like slavery, farming, and so on. Im willing to accept that some technology survives, so people have cars and so on. But no guns? The technical expertise required to build a gun is far lower than that which is required to build and maintain a car, so they have to be able to build guns, they just refuse to use them because bad, so they use crossbows and swords? Immersion: broken. Calradia: Oh god, this is the origin of that stupid meme map from 4chan? Learn something new every day, I guess. Alright, so this looks like the absolute most stock not!Europe Ive ever seen, right down to a not!Roman Empire that collapsed in the distant past. Yeah, Nords to the north, a Sultanate to the south, got it. The Wiki even describes most of its past as unknown, which makes it harder to judge, I guess, but eh. Skyworld: Its hard to really judge this as a setting, because its super barebones. Its just Ancient Greece in the sky. The appeal of Kid Icarus (at least Uprising) is Pit, Palutena, and Hades just screwing around. The actual setting is barely present. I will admit that I didnt see the weird aliens coming, though. Anagram 04/23/20 3:14:00 PM #185 | Cthulhu Mythos: The Cthulhu Mythos, its like a thing. What if humans werent important at all? What if there were beings that see us the same way we see ants? They have their own wars and emotions and thoughts, and they literally dont care how they affect us. They dont even hate us, they just dont care. Also, I might be literally the most racist man in 1910s America. Its hard to really call this a coherent universe, because its really disconnected horror stories united by the idea of incomprehensible horrors at the edge of human understanding. Like I really like the idea that we know only a tiny fraction of what there is to know, and that as our science and philosophy improves, we will certainly accidentally uncover wacky shenanigans that will blow our minds and reveal how irrelevant we are, which will drive us insane. I guess thats it, what else is there to even really say? I guess I could talk about how this genre is inherently unfilmable, which is why Cthulhu might be the biggest like thing without a major film adaptation. Monster Hunter Universe: Oh Jesus, uhhhhhh does this franchise even have a world or a plot? Five minutes of googling reveals that there was once an ancient civilization that left behind some ruins, and the world has a ton of monsters all over it. I once watched a YouTube video about the newest Monster Hunter, and the guy made a big deal of how monsters sometimes fight amongst themselves, which lends verisimilitude to the game. That seemed kind of neat? Toriko Universe: I know Toriko only from one thing. I follow an insane guy on YouTube who analyzes all Dragon Ball-related media, and one of the things he analyzed was a movie crossover of Dragon Ball, One Piece, and Toriko. When I saw that, I was like what the **** is Toriko? I love when you get an obscure nothing series crossing over with a big name like that. So, this planet is 30% humans, 70% inhospitable and filled with monsters, and this part has all of the best ingredients for food, so people need to enter it and find ingredients? Strange premise, but alright. I like how the people are drawn Fist of the North Star-style, but everything is silly and dumb. Mid-World: I like the idea of Stephen Kings usually small-scale horror titles being united by this insane epic fantasy. Like, you wouldnt expect an alternate dimension King Arthur to exist in the same universe as Misery, yet here we are. I like the post-apocalypse feeling, I like the disconnected Western town aesthetic, its all good. Instead, lets talk about the movie. How much more could you screw up an attempt at a big movie franchise? Like, you cant call your main villain Walter. I realize thats his name, but the book calls him like the Man in Black. You call him Walter one time as a joke, then go back to the serious name. Its like if Darth Vader was called that one time, then the rest of the franchise just calls him Brent. --- Not changing this sig until I decide to change this sig. Started: July 6, 2005 |

Anagram 04/23/20 3:13:04 PM #184 | Star Trek (Prime): Talking only about the setting itself, and not the stories or atmosphere, I still really love Star Trek. Im done with Star Wars, but Ill watch even bad Star Trek. I mean, Ill never rewatch Discovery or Picard, but I still gave them a shot. Of course, you have to accept a ton of stuff that doesnt make sense, like how the Federation doesnt solve its existential problems by slinging around the sun, but fine, I dont actually care about that sort of nitpicky nonsense, I just find it funny to point out. And the ships! Star Trek has such great ship designs. I dont even know what to talk about Star Trek without talking about specific storylines, so Im going to pick out my favorite irrelevant, didnt-have-to-be-here-but-we-did-it-anyway piece of worldbuilding in the franchise. Theres an episode of Deep Space 9 where we go to Cardassia, the planet of fascist lizards, and learn that their trials arent to determine guilt or innocence, theyre just to publicly display how you did your crime, and everyone is always declared guilty. At the start of your trial, your spouse is allowed to say they divorce you, and when a defense lawyer with sixty years of experience accidentally wins a case, he goes pale and realizes hes going to be killed for this. Its so ****ing brilliant. Most other franchises would just say lol its a kangaroo court, but Star Trek went all the way, and I appreciate that. Star Trek (Kelvin): How do you judge something thats basically the same, but worse? JJ Abrams at least had the decency to just say ALTERNATE UNIVERSE I CAN DO ANYTHING NOW, as opposed to a CERTAIN prequel series I can mention, but man, does Star Trek Into Darkness ever not understand this franchise. Beyond is okay, but its impossible to like it. I cant even remember Idris Elbas evil plan. It doesnt help that the movies hemorrhage cast members, with Carol Marcus just disappearing between movies and Anton Yeltsins unfortunate death in real life. And does anyone mind if I say that I hate how they made Sulu gay? George Takei said he always intended for Sulu to be straight even though hes gay in real life, but clearly Takeis sexuality informed the reboots decisions, because now Sulu is just gay when he never was in the originals. Like Im not insane, right? That is a completely bizarre decision to make, right? Alola: The decision to focus this game on just Hawaii was a good one. The decision for the evil team to be split between dumb thugs and hyper advanced weido scientists was a good one. The decision for the plot to be about saving someones crazy mom instead of stopping pokegod from blowing up the world was a good one. The decision to have weirdo Hawaiian totems for legendaries was a good one. The biggest misstep here is with Ultra-Space. It was more interesting when it was implied to just be a Cthulhu realm with incomprehensibly bizarre pokemon that dont make sense to our mortal eyes or whatever. Then its revealed to just be another dimension where humans live, and they just have weird pokemon. Bad decision. Stargate: Of the four Star franchises, Wars, Trek, Gate, and Search, Gate is easily my third favorite. That quote really sums up everything. In the eternal Trek vs Wars battle, one that shall never end, Gate is there. It never quite attained the level of prominence that the others did, and itll always be two steps beneath them, if it even retains that at all. People who love Stargate are the same people who answer Crash when asked Mario or Sonic? The funny part is that the entire premise of this series is ripped off of a Star Trek episode. What if the Greek/Egyptian gods were real, but were aliens? Heres the thing: Star Trek. Its a genius concept. Some guys are in a ship, they travel around and see the whatever planet every episode. Stargate says What if we remove the ship? Its arguably even more genius as a result. The problem is that where Wars has action and excitement and Trek has science and philosophy, Gate has nothing. Its just another adventure in space. And its very fun! Dont get me wrong. I love a completely insane pyramid spaceship ruled by ancient space worm gods with silly voices more than most people, and I love the Replicators even though theyre just the Borg, and I loooooove the Asgard being super geniuses who need humans because we can be smart, but also dumb, and they overlook things like bullets because theyre too primitive. Its all fun. But its easy to see why Trek and Wars have a level of immortality that Gate doesnt. Its easy to see why Trek and Wars still get new content, but Stargate: Atlantis kind of fumbled and Stargate: Universe was rejected by everyone. Gate is fun, and its concepts are fun, but it lacks a deeper idea to motivate it. That, and it was really buoyed by Richard Dean Andersons charisma, and when he left, a lot of the charm went with him. Universe Dream Land Pac-Man Universe --- Westeros: Im not a huge fan of generic fantasy Europe, but Ill admit that Westeros is probably the best example of it. I mean, yeah: its generic fantasy Europe. I like the idea of seasons that have unpredictable lengths screwing everything up. I sort of like the idea of the Wall, even if the logistics dont make any sense. And yeah, Im gonna talk about logistics, deal with it. The more seriously youre trying to be taken, the more it matters, so Azeroth gets a pass on things Westeros doesnt. I dont know how to feel about the reduced importance of religion compared to real world medieval Europe, I kind of feel like those things were too tightly interlinked for the Maesters to function as they do, but Ill let it slide. Im not REALLY sure how I feel about a continent the size of South America being united by medieval technology. Even today, with modern technology, theres only one country the size of South America, and its only one country because 70% of it is Siberia. I realize they united it using dragons, so I guess I can accept it on the grounds that it hasnt fallen apart yet. One thing I dont accept is that everyone overlooks the Iron Islanders constant nonsense. Please. The Vikings got away with that because they were far away from everyone of importance, and their way of life fell apart the second large countries began to form. The last important Viking died in 1066. So to tell me that these large, powerful pseudo-countries havent already marched onto the islands and massacred every adult male is absurd. And yeah, I know that Ned Stark sort of did that when he was young, Im talking pre-Ned Stark. The Iron Islands would realistically have been wiped clean of all the not!Vikings centuries before the story starts. Aside from that, Im not a fan of rectangular continents? It looks ridiculously unnatural. I get it, I know Westeros is just England and Ireland put on top of each other and flipped vertically, but it looks insane. No landmass would ever form like that. Honestly, Westeros is most fun to look up insane fan theories about. My favorite one is that Westeros and Essos connect in the north and form a giant circle where most of it is frozen and controlled by the Others. --- Not changing this sig until I decide to change this sig.
