When the new servers went up Tuesday night/Wednesday morning, I woke up and started anew there. I'm on Azuresong now, and leveling a priest. At first, there were no level rushers, so I was catching up to the leader pretty quickly, but now there's a hunter pushing the pace so I doubt I'm going to hit 60 first there since I didn't do the same.

Anyway, currently level 25 on effectively 2 days real time. (About 26 hours /played.)

someone was pinging a lvl 60 sword in chat the other day, Cold Hunger I think. can you ping items if they haven't dropped/been crafted?

I was able to sign on to Grobb around 5 last night, kept myself AFK through dinner so I could do a few quests afterwards. I had a half hour later to kill so I had to play on whatever other server I could.

I find myself doing what I did back in 04, and just 'wasting' time exploring. Of all the things I wasn't really prepared for, the lack of any clue where trainers/etc. are is the biggest thing. It's easy enough to look this stuff up or talk to a guard. But if you're like me and you hate asking for directions, well... :)

What WoW Classic is really offering (to me) is the 1-60 experience where everyone is low level and exploring and engaging in all of the zones and Azeroth content. It's like a new MMO dropping - starter zones thriving, etc.

superposition has a cause but its exact effect is unknown and unknowable. it's not semantics to say that if something is deterministic that you can calculate the result if you know the exact nature of the cause; that's the definition. in quantum mechanics, you can have as perfect as physically allowed information about a system, the wavefunction, and be unable to know exactly what the result would be. it's like if you had a die and were only allowed to know how many sides it had and no information about how it was thrown. you'd only be able to give probabilities for results, with two identical scenarios potentially yielding two different outcomes. non-deterministic

Basically, things down to the atomic level act like billiard balls on a universal scale, so you could theoretically predict how everything will end up given infinite time to plot it all out across the universe

But things smaller than atoms dont work that way. They dont adhere to Newtonian physics. You cant predict their behaviors based on how other things interact with them. They exist in multiple places at once (a superposition), and dont become fixed until someone observes them.

Our brains function on a quantum level, or so I understand

My intuition leads me to think that even things like superposition have a cause, even if we're not able to grasp it. If that means I'm using "deterministic" wrong that's fine I like doing that

The other option is to stand up more servers which would be a large money pit, especially if people bail once the novelty wears off and the grind sets in. I have no idea what I'd expect if I were Blizzard. Day 1 is going to be a disaster, sure. I also don't really know their infrastructure. I do agree that server layering sounds unappealing... but it's better to start that way than to end that way (look at GW2)

Got my first solo win today. I have like a dozen second/third finishes but I was never able to time the third party finale well until today, and I haven't really played the mode this week and I don't really enjoy it. But yeah I basically ended up camping due to household distractions and did 3 damage to the second place guy for the win. Super lame haha

I read a good idea yesterday - try an RP server because once the novelty wears off (assuming it does), the RPers and the hardcore players will the ones left.

I never had to deal with it in WoW, but I guess it's also a good idea to avoid streamers because they mess up chat and they can mess with quest hubs, etc.

So I rushed home after work and got into the character creation screen on reserve day all ready to start reserving Desuka.... then decided I didn't want to do that at all and spent like 3 hours trying to think up a name.

I was thinking the same. Originally I thought I should grab an undead warlock named Pale and an orc Shaman named Church.

but...

that was ten+ years ago. The people I played with are old and probably wouldn't dream of throwing away any more of their life to this game, or they're stuck in Fortnight, or they have other friends. The culture I participated (and the person I was) aren't really going to be the same, so this should be a fresh start.

I'll fire it up, and if my backup names are taken, well, I'll look around the room and name my character after the first thing that catches my eye.

I'd love to group up with B8 folks but I imagine we all have our own pace of play. I imagine my East Coast dad schedule won't play well with a West Coast dad schedule and especially not with any sort of bachelor schedule. So I figure I'll just sign up for whatever server and go from there.

It'd be cool if we had the option like in GW2 that we could have our own Board 8 guild while also having other guilds. alas.

As far as newbie friendly, WoW is fine. Some people will be high level quickly, but you don't have to stress about them. If you take forever, it'll probably take you longer to get through some of the content. And who knows about endgame longevity - people might not care to farm MC/BWL forever. In my time in WoW, it was like 3 different phases...
1. Newbie through level 40 mount. You're learning the ropes, exploring, questing, dying, having fun, it's fairly straight forward in a way. The mount (for most...) is the first time you have to legit grind for a permanent/long term upgrade, and it changes your day to day experience.
2. 40 Mount to endgame - The mount is the first thing you've had to really save up for. And in this time, expectations increase - you sort of need to know what you're doing, or to know to look it up or ask for help. You also have friends in the 50s if not 60, and it starts to act as an impetus to get yourself up. You've also likely gotten along well with people and been added to a guild.
3. endgame

Server popularity - it will be hard to login at first! you wanted vanilla, you got it. They might add servers a week later. Endgame, I'm curious to see how people will enjoy organizing 40 man raids and waking up at 4am to kill world dragons again.

Fair enough, hosting is a challenge and it's somewhat unfair of me to badger you, though I think my feedback has some value. I do think I'd echo the "smaller games" sentiments I've read as of late. But I don't play or host. I generally just try to make positive comments in postgame topics because I feel like they are always negative but now I'm just being negative. so blah on me.

I don't sign up because I can't commit to games.

this wasn't as fun to read as a lot of other recent games. I think if you told me it was a game with a SK, Ulti D1 mislynch and Sir Chris scum RB being lynched fair and square, I would have been totally hyped going in.

We had some negativity, some lazy town, and obvtown tunneling obvtown and it was a bit of a drag to read.

I do blame the hosts at times because they like adding as much flavor as they can and they'll happily pull in lazy people and negative people into games so they don't have to omit roles/characters. Spam rule 0 all you want, you put a hostile player into your game. Is that fair to the other players?

I had to select "drop solo" pretty much every game. I'll land with my squad most of the time but I don't want to have someone land right next to me and grab all the stuff from "my" supply bin and I end up with a -2 because I had no weapon, and I like to see how many squads are landing where they land, and if they drop too early or late, etc. If I play normally I get too frustrated with randoms when I end up -2 for dumb behaviors.

I expect some bad games and I'm not perfect, but getting -2 for the stuff that already frustrates me - too maddening ha

I tried solo, got 2 games in. Game 1 I got 20th place, didn't see anyone and someone camping around a corner picked me off. Game 2 I got second place, killed #3 and did good work on #1 but he totally third-manned the fight and I was out of shields from it. Weapons are such a crapshoot at the drop that I don't want to drop in a crowd only to get a helmet and two cells while the guy next two me gets an energy weapon.

finally got platinum in ranked and now I can play normally - I was developing some bad habits. I have no desire to grind for diamond.

I did get a win with the very final pinhead sized circle, it was one of my favorite final battles because both squads were originally stuck in different corners of one of those U shaped buildings. Never seen that ultimate "ring" before.

at amazon we had a department just for patenting and they'd patent employee ideas under the guise of "it would look great on your resume if you filed a patent! we'll pay for it for you" but it was really just them making sure they could get a lock down on all your ideas and free thought

i knew dudes who had 9 patents that saved the company millions overall and they were just happy to be contributing to the glorious amazon empire

I think usually if you come up with idea in the workplace, or involving your workplace, the company has some claim to those patents/ideas and they usually have the lawyers to win those cases.
