I used to work at a restaurant that did it by placing it under running water. That place sucked.
I do that with seafood. Never heard of doing it with meats.

I do it all the time with meat. Hell sometimes I just leave things out on a plate in the kitchen overnight.

Despite all the cautionary tales about food safety I figure that if it's been in the freezer anything harmful is already dead, and a couple of hours on a countertop isn't gonna change that. Also it's about to go into a 450F oven, it's fine.

But nobody can deny that his technique is perfect. The guy doesn't know how to stub a note, never mind miss one. And the stuff he does defies explanation sometimes.

I just find myself wishing he would tone down the hamminess in some of his covers because sometimes he approaches perfection and then ruins it with some insane frilly nonsense. But I guess that's just who he is.

https://www.reddit.com/r/ukpolitics/comments/e1z0xm/jeremy_corbyn_is_not_a_racist_but_boris_johnson/f8trhwn/

I don't want to sound too tinfoil-hat, but it really is a creation of our right-wing press, which is then dutifully reported on by the Beeb and others. (The Beeb has to appear balanced, apart from when they get to read out "tomorrow's newspaper front pages" on air.)

So we live in this bizarre place where BoJo isn't criticised for things he actually, factually has said and done: calling black people "piccaninnies with watermelon smiles", Islamophobic incidents rose by 375% in the week after he compared veiled Muslim women to letterboxes , he's called gay men "bum boys".

These are undisputed real true facts, and he has repeatedly refused to apologise for any of them.

And Corbyn is smeared using innuendo and suggestion: maybe he's secretly anti-semitic, even though he consistantly says he isn't and decries antisemitism, even though he's demonstrably spent a lifetime fighting racism and prejudice. So it's "maybe he hasn't done enough to fight antisemitism in the party".

"Maybe Corbyn's a secret Brexiteer, despite him campaigning for Remain at the time. But "maybe he hasn't done enough to promote the Remain cause, so he's to blame for the Brexit referendum result?"

On the one hand you have things BoJo has actually, undisputedly done and said, and we're "balancing" this with hints and suspicion that maybe Corbyn hasn't done enough.

It's a mad world out there, but the complete inequality of standards demanded of the two men is insane.

Every goddamn day I hear about how Jeremy Corbyn might be anti-semetic. Nebulous rumours and tabloid gossip. Nothing particularly concrete. Maybe it's that he's not doing enough to fight anti-semitism.

Meanwhile any time Boris Johnson speaks like a plantation owner from the 1800s it's passed off as him being a silly billy. What in the ever loving fuck is wrong with us?

It's just like Trump really.

I made a bed of onions, parboiled potatoes and garlic

https://i.imgur.com/D9w96Ac.jpg

Put chicken thighs on top. These had been marinading in a mixture of mustard, soy sauce, brown sugar, chipotle, garlic and vinegar. Into the oven for 35 minutes.

https://i.imgur.com/xQl1Z3i.jpg

When you bake or fry meat that's been marinading in sugar or honey it tends to blacken quite a lot but that's not generally a sign of being overdone. It was perfect inside and nicely crisp on top.

https://i.imgur.com/yaZU1Lg.jpg

The potatoes needed another 10 minutes though.

Which is how I feel about a lot of say, jazz funk rock fusion. The giveaway (to me) is when the audience cheers any time the solo musician (and there will be a lot of solos) does something particularly difficult.

It's funny actually because when I put it that way that's exactly what flamenco music is about and that doesn't seem nerdy, so I admit my opinion is just my own.

The doctor, even more alarmed, jumps in. "Now listen, this is ridiculous. There's a very small chance that he's fine. And if he is fine, then the worst that will happen is he'll have to stay in hospital for a bit and get poked with needles. But if we're right, then if he walks out that door he's going to die. You can look at the charts! Just look at the charts! I'm a doctor for Christ's sake!"

"Doctor, I'm sorry but we're done here, and your elitism isn't helping. Your dubious data won't convince me of anything since you already admitted that you don't have a true consensus. But I tell you what - if he dies I'll concede that you happened to be correct."

He's bleeding from sores all across his body. His skin is a dark yellowy green. His hair is flaking off in chunks. He coughs and blood sprays out. He tells the doctor that every time he tries to go to the toilet he's conspitated and sometimes blood comes out. The doctor takes his temperature and it's a whopping 105F.

The doctor looks alarmed, and says "Honestly, I think you're very ill. Let's get you into the ER."

At that moment, a heroic skeptic bursts through the window.

"Hang on a minute doctor", he says, "how can you be sure that he's ill? Correlation does not mean causation. Just because he's burning up, bleeding, flaking, discoloured and limping does not mean he is necessarily ill."

"Well", says the doctor, "I am a doctor and that's my opinion so far, but it doesn't take a doctor to see this man needs to be treated as an emergency. I mean, just look at him."

"The arrogance of so-called professionals", opines the skeptic. "If you were a true scientist, you would prove it. And just because you are a doctor does not mean you are automatically right. This man may be a conman, and these symptoms may be entirely false."

The doctor has to admit this is technically true, and she was going to investigate it further anyway, so she takes the man away and performs a series of tests. She performs an MRI scan, CT scan, X-rays, a colonoscopy, a sigmoidoscopy, a few blood tests, urine and stool samples and checks the patient visually for any further symptoms. She passes the results to her team of 10 specialists who evaluate the output and provide a diagnosis.

The doctor returns to the skeptic. "We've had a look at the results and have concluded that we think he is indeed, Extremely Very Ill."

The skeptic is unconvinced. "But just a minute, what do you mean you think? You mean you don't know for sure?"

"Well we can never really be totally sure, and there was some disagreement, but that is our general consensus after all the test results from various equipment designed to measure this sort of thing."

"Ah", the skeptic smiles. "So in other words, you made assumptions? You didn't prove in your experiments that the machines also work, that they perform the exam accurately and conclusively? And further, your team didn't totally agree?"

"We disagree on particulars. For example I and 7 other of my colleagues give the patient 2 days if he doesn't get treatment immediately. A couple of my colleagues expect he'll live as much as a week. And there's that one guy who doesn't think he's ill at all. And we don't have time or the resources to prove these machines work, they have always been correct before."

The skeptic leans back triumphantly. "So in other words, you really don't know for sure, there is no consensus, you haven't proven anything, and you're relying on past data to inform what is currently happening now. And finally one of your colleagues - as much a doctor as you are - thinks he is not ill at all?"

The skeptic turns to the man, "You can go home now. They don't have proof that you're ill."

This would be especially relevant for couples on the progressive left who claim to be self-conscious about differences in societal privilege. Having an exorbitantly expensive wedding ceremony would of course be a huge contradiction to that claim as it is an enormous sign of wealth and privilege. And, yes, asking the parents or other family members to foot the giant bill still qualifies as flexing that privilege...

Not sure why this suddenly got political but honestly I think progressive lefties are more the kind to have lowkey weddings, something-other-than-diamonds and some vintage wedding dress.

Bold take, I know.

I'm a fairly ordinary 30 something year old man I've been to tonnes of weddings at this point, and I can quite seriously draw an inversely proportional graph showcasing how good a wedding was versus how much it cost.

The absolute most boring wedding I ever went to was at the most pompous catholic cathedral in town (the service was about 2 hours of "If you guys ever break up God will never forgive you in Hell" nonsense), followed by a 3 course meal at a reception venue at the top of a landmark. Who decided that sitting next to 8 people you don't know on a table so big you can only speak to 2 of them would be a good party format?

I believe that wedding cost something like $120k and they broke up within 9 months. The ring was $20k and it's resale value was something like $3k.

The best wedding I went to was at somebody's farm. They built the furniture and decorations themselves, they had their friends play in the band and another friend do the catering. There was no sit down part of it at all. And there was no goddamn church. The service itself was on the beach next to their house. Total cost was like $4k, mostly on booze. They didn't bother with an expensive ring and just decided to go on holiday instead. Everyone just camped on the grounds that night.

That's how you do a wedding! A big party with no pomp or circumstance and just good people. Save your goddamn money for something actually fun.

If you had an expensive wedding I apologise. But I stand by my opinion.

I get where you're coming from TC but you're not gonna get sympathy from people who live paycheck to paycheck and earn in a year what you earn in a month. You just aren't.

It's basically entirely tasteless

But somehow taking one of those balls and just tearing it apart and stuffing it in your mouth is so yum

I got you beat. I forgot my laptop at home and had to get a loaner. The IT guy is nice and personable and delivered the loaner lap top quickly. I filled out the survey and gave him the highest marks for the service he provided. And Im a bit sore from work I did over the weekend.

Worst. Day. Ever.

Damn, I bet you had a pleasant but nicely succinct conversation and everything

it sounds obvious but "spare keys".

I keep a set of spare keys at the office for this exact purpose. However I had just happened to take them home on friday to lend to someone who was staying over. Heh, I should have included that detail.
