TomNook 10/11/19 7:11:22 PM #3 | You can't. Years ago, I tried to explain to a live person that I wasn't the person they were asking for, and they just say something like "I'll call back" or "oh, ok", or "we'll remove you", but they just keep calling anyway. Eventually it stops. You can try blocking the number, but most of the time they call from random numbers. If it's really bad, set your default ring to silent, and just give everyone who calls you a ringtone. --- Bells, bells, bells! |

TomNook 10/08/19 9:37:13 AM #66 | And I do feel some people have it in their head that if a company doesn't want a viewpoint said on their platform, that it automatically means the company supports the opposing side. It's no different than if you are hosting a family dinner, and in the middle of it, when your brother is talking about what he's doing in college, someone says "I hate liberals/republicans", and you say "Hey, no political talk tonight". It doesn't mean that you are opposed to his viewpoints, nor does it mean you agree. It just means you don't want to derail what is taking place with needless drama. This situation isn't any different, and a company isn't obligated to have a stake in the events. They aren't doing any damage by doing nothing politically...they are just literally doing nothing politically. If that is harm in your opinion, I don't know what to tell you. --- Bells, bells, bells! |

TomNook 10/08/19 9:22:06 AM #62 | pyresword posted... They're saying that "the way a company is supposed to function" in this case leads to actions that are inherently evil and to be condemned, because they're about enriching themselves at the expense of other people's freedoms. (To clarify, I am referring to the people of Hong Kong here, not the streamer who got fired) To be clear though, Blizzard is enriching themselves, as companies do, but they aren't doing anything at the expense of other people's freedoms. They simply took away someone's usage and prize for using their platform in a way against their image. Blizzard is a company about making video games, and people are associating too strongly China's beliefs with made-up Blizzard beliefs, just because Blizzard didn't want to be any part of the potential controversy. Blizzard didn't do anything. You can make a case that "not helping" is negative, but I'd also mention that it's not relevant to a company. Fact is, they aren't hurting, and I think many people are associating them as doing such. If them doing business at all with China is considered enriching themselves at the expense of other's freedoms though, that's a whole different conversation, and would presumably involve a ton of companies to not deal with China, and wouldn't even be about Blizzard at all. Also sounds like a politics discussion. --- Bells, bells, bells! |

TomNook 10/08/19 9:03:38 AM #56 | banananor posted... I think we're in agreement. True, though your example is a bit different. My usage of surprise was more along the lines of someone knowingly saying/doing something controversial in a setting that is likely to enrage or stir things up, that they then direct their anger at the person/people/company who naturally would shut down the behavior. To me, it seems like misguided anger, because one would expect that the person who planned to do this would have anticipated the outcome of eventually not having free reign to do what they like, and they went in knowing that they'd be angry at the person who would ultimately stop them. This leads me to see it as them experiencing surprise, perhaps through lack of awareness at how the world works, in addition to anger of course. With all that in mind, I think you're responding to people you imagine trusted blizzard to do something else All I really wanted to say was that company's need to uphold their image and have a decent amount of control if they wish to remain stable. That's pretty much it. --- Bells, bells, bells! |

I can guarantee you Blizzard would not have handed out the same punishment if he went on a tangent about his cooking blog or whatever Using a brand's platform to say something that will upset a lot of people is a bit different than a cooking blog. A better comparison I suppose would be using a string of foul language (depending on the brand's image), racial slurs, stripping naked live, making threats against someone, etc. banananor posted... "I support protests, but only if they're off in the corner where I can't see them." I mean, sure, nothing's stopping people from protesting when they want. They just shouldn't be surprised when they suffer the consequences for doing it in an inappropriate situation. They just need to weigh what outcome is more important to them. For this Hearthstone player, perhaps this was the more important result. I just don't think a lot of people understand how a company is supposed to function if you are expecting them to bend over backwards for everyone who has an opinion they want to make public. --- Bells, bells, bells! |

TomNook 10/08/19 3:40:19 AM #20 | DoomTheGyarados posted... The second half addresses everything else. Corporations do not have more right to profit than a human does their life and freedom. They did this purely so their profits would not be hurt in the face of, again, freedoms being taken away and murder. That is an immoral act. Fair enough, but I must ask you, where do you draw the line? Should people be allowed to do anything they want using a corporation's image if they feel it's for a stand where lives are at risk? This becomes a very tricky line. When there are multiple sides who are at odds, and lives are being lost on both (I'm speaking in general, not about China), how does the company choose who to allow to speak. Do they toss out all form of making money when people are pressuring them to air their political views, and insert messages into their own games to try and tame the landscape? There is clearly a line at some point where they must draw it because they wouldn't be a company much longer if they reluctantly accepted demands from all sides. I see nothing wrong with a video game company wanting nothing to do with people talking about politics. To me, them drawing a line right at the start is fine, because it fits with them preserving their brand. --- Bells, bells, bells! |

Too bad The Academy Awards don't take away the Oscar when someone wins for a movie, and then starts talking about politics, instead of the movie. I'm not saying anything about what is moral in the political landscape. I have no opinion there. I'm saying that brands standing up for their own brand is fine. A video game company wasn't built toward any political affiliation, and essentially sponsoring one side of it will create animosity and negativity toward the brand from those who disagree with what is being shown. Blizzard isn't saying what is right or wrong; they are saying just don't hijack their image with your own believes. Blizzard allowing someone to do this isn't much different than a baseball stadium letting a streaker stay on the field during a game, and making no effort to remove them. Again, I'm not defending Blizzard because I particularly care about their games, but I'll defend a company for wanting to keep their brand focused on the product. --- Bells, bells, bells! |
